I have a feeling this is going to be a brilliant series. I love learning things about how electricians do things and how electricity works and this video again managed to teach me something new. Cory, if you ever get fed up working in the cold in winter, you should apply to a university to become a professor haha! You're honestly one of the best educators I've ever seen. If you can teach a monkey like me new things, well that's really saying something!

Outstanding video sir, really enjoyed this one. We do a lot of industrial/agricultural installs for some of the biggest farmers in the uk. Definitely food for thought for our customers.

Oh Cory, I know what you mean about dairy intolerance! I've never felt better since I stopped having it....but if you have some accidentally because you're too shy to mention it...oh lordy🤭😵‍💫 This is a fantastic project and the guys you're working with are excellent educators too. I'm not an electrician but fascinated by your work and you're helping me to at least be able to recognise a good job from a bad one as a potential customer. Looking forward to the next one.👍

Love your videos. Using victron to create an off grid 3 phase system is brilliant. I feel like this system has so much potential if you increase the DC voltage to reduce the loss. I’m currently working in the commercial industry but what you guys are working towards here is pretty close to our industry standard. Obviously this is a very unique project but I’m time I think having an off grid, 3 phase island system will be increasingly beneficial. Not just to the super rich be to local communities that will need to charge EVs etc. having micro 3 phase networks is potentially the way forward and this video sheds light on that. At the moment I don’t think this is a financially viable option but potentially if local communities can get involved who knows . It’s 2:38 on a work night and you probably won’t see this so I should probably head off. But this is my semi-drunken rant. Keep up the good work, would love to meet up and have a good old chat about our renewable energy crisis and hear what you have to say about it. Cheers, Tom #noProofReading

Solar sheds seem like the best route. Can quickly upgrade without modifying the house. Make them strong enough and it becomes a storm shelter. On a big property, you can have many smaller solar wires come from the sunny field, to the shaded part of the yard by the house and then have fewer heavy wires run from the shed to the house. Construction workers don't need to be in your house very long.

Yeah, its great. I'm in Ireland and nearly every installer just wants to do bog standard roof jobs with no interest in this. I've fields like this and a three phase connection and was trying to get in a 40kw array wired to shed and then to house, but no takers.

An MPPT, or maximum power point tracker is an electronic DC to DC converter that optimizes the match between the solar array (PV panels), and the battery bank or utility grid. To put it simply, they convert a higher voltage DC output from solar panels (and a few wind generators) down to the lower voltage needed to charge batteries.

I love victron! but I'm biased because they very generously gave me a blue smart inverter to charge my homemade 24v 100ah LiFePO4 mobility scooter battery (with help from Andy and the community around his channel "off grid garage" - I learnt everything I needed to know to build my battery from there and they also managed to raise a bunch of money for the MS society which was really touching)

10:30 Yes we do use a lot of AL service entrance cable. When dealing with 400A service, depending on your runs you are talking anywhere between 350MCM (177mm2) to 600MCM (304mm2) cable. In copper that is way more expensive than AL wire. Considering that the power company here uses almost all AL wire for the power lines, I think we are ok. 🤠👍 Keep up the good work sir!

That was one of the most interesting vids you've done so far Cory, so looking forward to the final video, and its interesting that these guys have spotted a weakness in the market, I too have spotted it, but was going to make do with Seplos batteries! The BMS and the software that runs them it is often the weakest links in the system.

This is very useful for rural farms at the end of the grid, and heavily constrained. I know several dairy farms running on single phase that would be able to run more machinery simultaneously if they can up the instantaneous power capability

For 100 kW of solar, you really should consider using some AC-coupled Fronius inverters in a Microgrid configuration instead of two dozen DC-coupled MPPTs. The Victron Quattros can be set up with the AC Inverter Assistant and they will modulate the "grid" frequency to regulate the power output of the Fronius inverters and also charge the batteries from the AC side.

Regardless of the way the bulk of the pv modules get coupled it would be best if there is at least some dc based pv integrated in the system. So that the system can perform a cold start itself in case of a battery depletion

Daniel: it depends on when do you want to consume the power that is generated with solar, if you have immediate use (100% instant consumption) the Fronius is more efficient, but if your goal is to charge the 48V batteries during the day and consume the power outside of the solar power generation window then the DC coupled MPPTs are more efficient. Most installations are a mix of both so you can indeed go for a mix of AC-coupled Fronius and a couple of MPPT 450/200... The Victron setup allows you to be flexiable and expand if needed

I have 2x 6kw systems that's 4 Maximum Power Point Trackers. Mind you solar is a fair bit cheaper to acquire in Australia. I had installed the 2nd system on my South roof (equivalent to North in your hemisphere) 152'S For 6 months it matches or exceeds the north system For 6 months it tends towards ½ as effective. Equivalent year round when overcast Point? Don't discount the wrong side of the roof for solar.

Cory Another great video. I always need to watch a second time for maximum absorbtion. Love the new finger bling but remember its a safety thing. Is the shed getting a gutter? and is it on a slab ? . What about grounding?

If this is for a pool is it mainly going to be for water heating? For water heating applications I'm always curious about why you'd convert DC to AC just to run it through a resistive heater. In domestic setups solar diverters are a nice idea, but wouldn't it be easier to connect an immersion on the DC side of an inverter and soak up the surplus there?

The DC side of an inverter deals with power management. If you were to put it directly into a DC powered immersion heater it would most likely cause chaos. On larger installs such as this one you have a verity of different DC voltages. You would need to be able to combine these voltages, merge them then send them to a DC circuit. Using an AC system complies with what is currently available which means much lower cost and over all efficiency. If we all transitioned to DC potentially this could work but currently this wouldn’t be cost effective or efficient. Again 02:51, I could be talking absolute nonsense. Peace and love

I know you most likely said it as a joke but people with celiacs don't just do it because its cool, it is a serious issue for the genuine people suffering with it and can cause anything from diet changes up to multiple surgeries and needing a bags and feeding tubes fitted for life if it gets to far.

Sweet project! I know it's going to grow, but are two panels on a string enough to fire up the MPPT in the first place? All that excess heat, it's a shame it's not close enough to the house to recover the heat rather than condition it...... or is it?

I can't remember the exact number off the top of my head but you only need a couple of volts above the battery charge voltage for the MPPT to work. Unfortunately the cable run to the house is 120m so a little far for heat recovery but that would have been amazing!

MPPT = Maximum Power Point Tracker. Same question though as raised earliert: Why not RS450/200 instead of tons of small MPPT trackers? Also, for this type of power, I agree with the comment that AC inverters are most likely better suited for an installation like this.

They'll already be in the panels. Usually the little junction box where the wires come out of the panels I believe.

If you clad that wall with metal sheet, would that act as a heat sink for the MPPTs and allow you to stack them closer?

That’s a cool thought, I’m definitely not clued up enough to be sure about that, but my only thought is, it could have an adverse effect and pull heat in, as a heat sinks size and fin shape / direction is such that it pushes heat away for convection

Aluminium cabling is not trash, we use it a lot for long underground cabling routes here in Australia to keep down costs of copper Recently did a 300m 3phase underground using 240mm aluminium conductors and I can tell you if we used copper it would have been EXPENSIVE, terminate correctly and you will never have a drama, much lighter also when you’re winching them through conduits and off the drum Our network is made up of all aluminium conductors up on the poles and each overhead service line to each home Awesome video anyway cool to see the world of solar have had some experience in installs but I do not like roofs 😅

Nice I was hoping to do this eventually with 3 x 8k purely so I could charge my car at 22kw! But wasn't sure how to link in the 1 phase grid to the 3 inverters, Also the RS450-200 is your friend in this project Cory avoid those little toy 150/60MPPT's unless the customer loves wasting money? :D Oh also - split the array 50/50 between MPPT and AC out coupled Grid ties as for example 50kw 3 phase SMA inverter are so much cheaper than 20 x MPPT inverters.

You are right but the SMA will not turn on if the batteries are emtpy and the Victrons are turning off. The MPPTs will charge your battery even if the system is turned off! This system like this is also blackout capable. What a lot of people always also forget are the losses. If you use AC grid tied PV Inverters they will deliver AC which the Multiplus have to change to DC. Its more loss than you think going this path! The Victron system also has the 1:1 rule. You cannot have more AC tied Power on the AC output than your Multiplus can handle. If you have a 48/3000 Multiplus for example you have 3000VA of max possible so your AC tied Grid inverter then has to be below this value on each and every Multiplus you have. I also have a 3ph Victron system and use 3 SMA Grid tied inverters for AC connection and one 250/70 MPPT so I have both worlds too. Also the SMA would be only rudimentary controlled (via frequency shifting) in case batteries are full so the power would have to go into the grid (which is problem as this situation here is single phase grid only!!!) So you loose a lot of control when only using grid tied inverters. The only fully controllable AC PV Inverters are from Fronius and fully integrated into the Victron World. They can step up or down really precise. The SMAs will do jumps of step downs or bigger jumps up as their are not that fine controllable like a Fronius with communication. MPPTs from victron can be controlled by the BMS or by the settings you have programmed into the Multiplus system for charging the batteries. I would def not use that many MPPTs. One or two RS 450 would also be not that bad with higher Voltages. What I really don't like here in this example is the lack of a good BMS. The shunt would have not been needed if there is a proper BMS as the BMS tells you all the data already. Also with DVCC activated on the System the BMS would fully control the charging and power output according to the data of the BMS. If you already invest so much in a system like this with Victron, this is not what I would propose to do. What about the balancing of the batteries? I only see a positive and negative connection on the battery pack?!

The best (and maybe the only practical) way to get 3 phase power from a 1-phase grid connection is via an AC-DC single phase battery charger. This could be a Skylla TG 48V/50A or a fourth Quattro or Multiplus used solely for the purpose of charging the system battery from the 1-phase AC grid. Then the Quattros will convert the DC back to 3-Phase AC.

@@firefox7530 AC Coupled inverters are a more efficient solution for direct consumption of the PV energy during daytime, but slightly less efficient if that power is to be stored in the battery for later consumption. DC coupled MPPTs are the opposite. Efficient to get the energy into the battery, but then you have more losses when the Quattros convert DC to AC for consumption. And you mentioned "exporting to grid" above. When the grid is used for possible export of the surplus, the system frequency is set by the grid. There is no frequency shifting when connected to the grid. Victron uses Modbus to control Fronius inverters in on-grid mode. When in off-grid (Microgrid), they use frequency shifting because it's the fastest and most reliable way to communicate. PS: The "temporary" panels on the shed could provide enough energy to wake up the system if the battery has been completely drained during the previous night (i.e. Black Start). PS2: due to the 1:1 rule, AC Coupled PV is limited to 45 kW. So for 100 kW, they should probably split it in half. Half via AC Coupling and half via DC Coupling.

@@danielardelian2We have used a contactor on the grid supply to the L1 inverter. So the majority of the time the system is running in island mode. However if the batteries get too low the cerbo can tell the contact to close allowing us to use the full 200A charge of the Quattro. If you leave the grid connected all the time it will just keep the batteries charged making the solar pointless. Unfortunately the ESS assistant doesn’t work unless all 3 phases are connected to the relevant inverters, so you can’t set scheduled charging with SOC limits.

f or Victron MPPT controllers use 250V 70A MPPT controllers those will save some space and use 6 of them for maximum 105KW output on a cold day you can get higher voltages and more current so those controllers can take up to 100A each with no problem

Again another Victron install, I like it. Also the new supplier of batteries, are they going to keep that design of the battery casing or it is only now in prototype? That design they have kinda suits in 2 ways: from what I saw they have the terminals on the top, so if they remove the wall mounting lungs they can rack it with the terminals on the back, so both wall mounting and rack mounting in stacking config. Problem would be the cutout switch will be covered in the rest of the batteries stacked under the top one. My idea would they remove the cutout switch but keep a connector and have thread mourning holes on the cover, both front and bottom, with a connector added on the bottom. One of the connectors would had a shunt that you would move depending where you would mount the cutout switch. So if the cutout was on the bottom, the shunt would be on the connector on the front, if was on the front then the shunt on the bottom. That would make for an easy wall and rack mounting with the advantage of even if they wanted they could have an external cutout on the rack per banks of batteries for easy access instead of individual cutout per battery module. Amphenol, Wago and Phoenix Contact have such product in their catalog, I've used them in some unrelated projects.

The pack design is quite different from the ones in the video. We will also be releasing a range of different batteries from 5Kwh to 15Kwh in different form factors. The 15Kwh pack will be provided with both a wall mount and wheels with rubber feet

Do the battery packs have a BMS inside of each? I would guess they would have a seplos BMS or similar.

Yes, they have a BMS inside every pack. The prototypes have a daly BMS although we have found quite a lot of limitations with them. The production packs will have a Seplos BMS

@LemonEnergy thanks for the reply. The DALY BMS'sdo not stack either, so the CerboGX wouldn't be able to pull the combined stats from them. With the Seplos at least, you can connect 16 packs in parallel. If you need more than 16 Battery Packs, there is a driver for the CerboGX where it can combine multiple CAN/RS485 batteries into a single virtual battery that the CerboGX can use.

Why are the MPPT's generating so much heat? Doesn't seem like an efficient use of energy particularly if you also need aircon to help deal with it?

Hey Cory great video👍 I have a quick question though how come youve decided to over rate the shunt and lynx distributor so much I don't know much about solar so I am sure my understanding has gone wrong somewhere 🤔

With the full 100Kw of solar wether it’s a combination of AC/DC attached or all DC there will be close to 2000A flowing in the bus bars.

The final retail price isn't fully decided yet, but it will be very comparable to some of the well know packs already on the market.

I think the biggest draw back you have is the 150 volt limit with those MPPTs (as well as the quantity needed). If you could obtain another brand with the more common off grid rating of 500 volt, you will be able to reduce cable sizes considerably and reduce the number of MPPTs.

The final system will have larger MPPT’s I believe, but this setup is a temporary setup for the panels on the roof to fire up the inverters

Remember that DC requires at least 50% bigger cables than AC for the same number of Amps.

On a job yesterday and the supply to their garage was a swa cable that consisted of a 6mm brown 6 x1mm blue with 6mm earth. So neutral is connected via 6, 1mm cables. I have never seen this cable before. Anyone here know if this is safe. The load should be shared but it's bizzare. I don't want to have to change the cable it's it's safe and sits correct with the regs but I can't find where it's stated otherwise. Cheers to anyone that replies

Google a ‘concentric neutral’ cable. Sounds like a variant of that. If it meets a BASEC standard ( printer on the cable jacket ) and it tests out and is installed ok, I’d be happy.

Question? Instead of trying to "Cool" the power shed? Why not pull the hot air out of it and us it to keep a heatpump happy instead? There is so much wasted thermal energy on the table that people should be taking advantage of in the renewable sector.
