DIY OVERLAND | CB Radio Install Jeep Wrangler TJ

Күн бұрынA CB is a very important tool to have when out on the trail. I have always settled for walkie talkies just to get me by, but I decided to get a CB radio in order to have a solid form of communication when out on the trails.
In this video, I install my Uniden 520LX radio with a 3' Firestik. I also made my own tail light antenna mount out of some scrap metal. I hope you enjoy the video and it helps you get some ideas for your own CB setup!

Actually you've done a very good job on the cb installation. As you know finding a good ground on the tj is very difficult. I have my Cobra Night Watch installed in a Tuffy overhead console and with enough trial and error was able to get it good enough to hear truckers 5 miles down the road. The best of luck.

I was also having grounding issues. Make sure your stub that connects to the antenna is not touching your mount. Just make that hole bigger and tighten it down so it doesn’t shift.

Can you clarify a little more? The only thing touching my mount is the plastic washer (on top) and the metal hex style bolt for the antenna.

Arkansas Offroad The plastic washer and the bottom hex should be the only thing touching the mount. If the “bolt” that connects the lower and upper half of the antenna assembly on the mount touches the mount, it will create a short.

Also look up bonding. I own a JK and bonded it for my Ham radio. Tailgate to frame, frame to engine, body to frame, exhaust to frame, battery to frame, radio to frame, etc. My SWR dropped a lot. with a 20 meter ham stick, from St. Louis have reached South Island New Zealand (8300 miles), Most of Europe, and South America. CB (11 meter band) won't travel that far, but the concept is the same.

Wow thats awesome. Is it the same thing as strapping? I attempted that to the tub of the Jeep but haven't seen hardly any decrease in SWR.

Grounding straps. tinned and braided. You will see the most improvement when doing the exhaust. Basically you are trying to create the largest ground plane you can. I guess Jeeps are known for being lousy ground planes in Radio Comm, but that doesn't mean you can't improve on them. I'm using an Arizona Rocky Road dual mount. One for my FM 2 meter and 1 for my Yaesu 20 meter. www.arizonarockyroad.com/

A couple of other things. get some splicing tape/compound from the electrical area of the hardware store (lowes, etc.). Wrap up the exposed connector to the Antenna then a good quality electrical tape around the splicing tape. It keeps the rain/moisture out. You might fine tuning the antenna will lower your SWR level as much as anything. Good luck

IF you're still having grounding issues on your antenna bracket, the easiest way to make sure it's on there right is to find someone with electronics experience, like an electronics technician. Have them help you get it installed properly, it's easy enough that most techs should be willing to help. May have to bribe someone with beer and pizza, or something else. Basically the plastic washer is there to isolate the (hot) upper part of the stud. The upper part has the RF power flowing through it to the antenna. The lower part of the stud is isolated from the top, by the plastic washer, and grounded via the bracket. Only the lower part of the antenna mounting stud should be contacting the grounded bracket. The internal center conductor of the antenna stud, where the coax cable's center connector pin is inserted into the antenna stud, is where the RF power flows and should not be contacting ground. By the way, I have the exact same radio and antenna on my TJ, and it works really good once set up properly. Good Luck!

Seanny D thanks! It’s just a standard cover from autozone. I had the stock rubber one but my body lift made it impossible to shift into second and reverse.

Good video, I am wrestling with trying to decide which way to go. Have you had any issues or worries with having the CB in such a conspicuous place? I have the same soft top and I worry that someone will try to cut the windows to steal a basically cheap radio.

Thank you. I haven't had that issue. Where I live I never have to worry about it even with the doors off. Hopefully they're not that desperate for a $40 radio haha.

I've had a few very nice radios over the years... 102" whip I installed on the ol' YJ...drilled through the side of the Jeep on the passenger side rear quarter near above the wheel where I could just get to the inside and had perfect SWR (tech selling the radio tested my antenna before the sale). With one of these. (no, not selling anything) www.rightchannelradios.com/collections/jeep-cb-radio/products/cb-antenna-ball-mount-and-hd-spring Using front gutter mount for the whip bent over it just missed the door opening/closing, but mostly it was free whipping...with a rubber ball slid down to where it banged the Jeep a little bit. ~~ CB install ~ Ground for CB went beneath grounded to seat, or seatbelt bolt..as recommended far from radio if I recall. Power..in line fuse wired hot to battery methinks. Not the fuse box. (Mounted in the YJ wasn't as high up so easier in part) ~ give ya some more money to spend. Too bad..it looks like Astatic quit making the amp mic I have, which many felt were the best. Astatic 575 M6 CB Ham Mic Microphone.

@@N64player1996 it was a 1989 Wrangler. There was room beneath the dash. If I ever got off the fence of putting a CB in my now TJ Rubicon I was going to get one of those overhead mounts...that reach from the windshield to roll bar. Some looked pretty sweet, although a bit pricey.

Only problem would be being able to view the front of the radio when overhead. (short legs/seat fwd?) Lenny I looked up your radio, it reminds me of my Galaxy and fairly large as well. Does the fire stick whip around and hit the jeep with the spring?

Nope. When it does whip around, the spring stays in place and the actual antenna will whip against my soft top. There's no metal to body rubbing at all.

Arkansas Offroad has it damaged the top? I want to put a spring in mine to reduce stress on the mount but am worried about it hitting anywhere on my jeep

Your never meet to transmit with no antenna plugged in it can do damage to the radio inside .....

Great install video. I plan on using the same CB radio and mounting it on an Arizona Rocky Road overhead mount. I already bought the Teraflex rear taillight antenna mount and I want to fit a 5' tunable firestick to it. How is your setup working since the installation? Scott

Nice to see you getting into radio, must say bad choice on antenna and mount placement, range and performance will suffer, additionally, power from the fuse box will only lead to more static and RF issues, run power leads straight to battery.
