Finally! No longer do we have to walk through sloppy, wet mud to get into our backyard/house! We lost our fence due to a hurricane a few months ago, when we had it replaced we decided to move the gate, for easier access, to the end of the fence. Because of this, we had to walk through grass (usually muddy because it rains often) which wasn't ideal. So we decided to build a pathway that can also hold water when it rains without flooding! We already had a huge rainstorm (what else is new) and all of our sidewalks and street was flooded, but guess what wasn't? OUR PATHWAY!! :) Hope y'all love it!

Great job guys! We wanted to do this project in our front yard too. We have a grade and was wondering how do you account for that so the pathway is nice and even from end to end? Basically our sidewalk is a lot lower than the other side (concrete near the front of house). So if putting say an even 2 inches of gravel/sand all the way around, wouldn’t it make the pavers on the higher side sit below the edge of the concrete?
@NextJeneration
@NextJeneration 3 жыл бұрын
I don’t think I fully understand, but I will say to try to have the pathway higher if anything so it doesn’t flood! You can use the metal edging like we did to hold everything in place and just follow the preexisting grade. I hope this helps!
@chinaman925
@chinaman925 3 жыл бұрын

@jowenstream

I loved your video and was just looking through the comments to see if anyone mentioned having a slope or grade. We do too and the ground here in GA is heavy red clay, so water just floods off. I’m hesitant to put a lot of sweat equity into a project on a grade since my grandfather was a civil engineer and I saw first hand how long he would take calculating slopes, weights, depths, etc. Old school, but that’s what DIY is, right? Not sure I have the training to attempt a slope, but if I figure out how to do it I’ll come back and post again for others with a grade. And, dear readers, if you’ve done this on a grade and have advice for a noob, please lmk! Thanks, Jen, for the fabulous videos and the inspiration and encouragement y’all give!
@chinaman925
@chinaman925 Жыл бұрын
So when we completed our project, we were lucky enough that when we removed the sod, the slope was really already present…if that makes sense. Since the whole area was already on the downgrade/slope, we just used the existing slope and put the gravel/sand pavers on that angle!

Why is the base and sand necessary? Theoretically can you just add more limestone to replace base and sand? Just curious!
@NextJeneration

For long term stabilization! Also, the gravel at the bottom is for additional drainage. But the sand is necessary so the pavers don’t “settle” and become wobbly!

By laying the pavers directly on the sand aren’t you concerned they will move or sink over time? Why wouldn’t you mortar/cement the pavers and point them so the are solid fixed?
@NextJeneration
@NextJeneration 3 жыл бұрын
The gravel allows water to get in and drain, and it also absorbs ground tension, which prevents the pavers from sinking. Then we added sand over it (and tamped it solid into place) which serves as a main stabilizer over time. When you place the pavers on the sand, they should sink slightly to “lock” the pavers in place. Without the gravel & sand, the pavers will shift over time. You could do cement, but that’s not a draining option for us. Gravel & sand will give the same result (with less work) as the cement, but will also drain heavy rains!

Hi! Did you use anything to lock the tiny gravel in its place or is it free to move? Its extremely windy here where I live

No, I recommend larger stones so they don’t move in heavy winds.

Great video thank you! Whats the point of the edging? It's gonna cost $900 dollars just for edging on the area we wanna do it my husband said. I think that's ridiculous, any cheaper options or is it something we can do without? We're just finishing our yard to move so we want to still do a good job but with all the expenses of moving I want to save money where we can :) thanks guys

Thank you! Edging will help keep all your gravel in place. It will also keep your grass from slowly creeping into your pathway, leading to a non straight edge on either side. There’s other options for edging, like this plastic edging: amzn.to/3jFGIil which is an inexpensive options. We have another video on our channel where we did a wood border (but lumber is a little more pricey since this video, but still less than metal edging) kzfaq.info/get/bejne/armhospjsc2vgmw.html But to answer your question, I do think some sort of edging is a must to give you a clean, finished look that will last!
