Eagerly waiting to see a Kamado Joe pellet Joe in the wild and want to find out if your Kamado Joe can run on pellets instead of charcoal? In anticipation of the pellet joe hitting stores everywhere I decided to see if I could hold low and slow temps using the iKamand as my powered fan unit in addition to testing the searing potential of wood pellets vs. charcoal for hot and fast grilling.
Some things went as expected… and some things were a true surprise. Find out if you should consider fuelling you kamado joe with wood pellets in todays video.

Hey James. Great video! Love watching your channel. This one on the PJ is pretty creative. We do all the design and engineering for KJ over the past 10 years and have developed and manufactured the Pellet Joe for Kamado Joe. It's an awesome grill and we're excited it's finally getting out in the world. Look forward to seeing you review it at some point down the road.

not a huge benefit. I don’t have to remove the tabs when I want to switch and no risk of melting any plastic was the idea. plus it also seemed like some air could be drawn in through the seems and I thought this approach might help keep the settings I am used too more consistent

I think it just comes down to the fact the Kamado is designed for low temp combustion, and perfect for charcoal. I think you saw our vid where we ran it as a wood fired pizza oven, I burnt down hard wood splits into coals for nearly 45 minutes to form a coal bed before closing it up. With pellets, you can't build a coal bed that will burn for any significant period of time :( Love your videos as always James, keep putting up the awesome content :)

when its winter, i like to cold smoke the pork belly when its raw as the temp in the Joe is the same as the refrigerator, wrap it in saran wrap after 4 hours and refrigerate overnight before hot smoking it until the internal temp is 150-160f and repeating the wrap over night to cool and prepare for the slicer.

Cold smoking would be a great video. Also, when using your KJ do you go by the dome thermometer or a probe on the grate? I find a 25 degree difference between the 2 with the dome being hotter.
@SmokingDadBBQ
@SmokingDadBBQ 3 жыл бұрын
might be time to calibrate your dome, often the grids are hotter by ~10-20f than what the dome will read. I don't always use probes so I like to keep my dome calibrated so i can use it. doesn't really matter so long as you stick to one for learning what vent settings can drive what outcomes

I think the issue with pellet grills isn’t so much they cannot retain heat, but that the auger restricts the amount of pellets in the combustion chamber. Also, the combustion chamber is much much smaller on pellet grills. This experiment demonstrates this. With essentially a hopper full of pellets burning, 900 degrees was reached. With a small combustion chamber, it limits the amount of burning wood. It’s similar to a partial chimney vs full chimney of charcoal. Full chimney will be able to reach higher BTU. Great videos!

How do you like that grill gun for lighting charcoal? I was looking at getting one, but they are pricey. Do you usually use the fire starters? That Torch you have with the yellow bottle is the exact one i'm currently using.
@SmokingDadBBQ
@SmokingDadBBQ 3 жыл бұрын
I am going to do a video on it.... in short the gun is a hoot (hands down the most fun) but it burns through a bottle very fast, is a pain to store, and stops working if you point down too much and you need to take it apart and start over. I like fire starters and my map torch for every day use, and i like having the gun as a toy and blasting the heat quickly

Interesting video Pal ! I'm going to stick with the lump. for me it's to much work . I've cold smoked cheese last year on the stick burner, it was ok, but I figured out that I should've used charcoal just to get a base for wood instead of using charcoal with wood chunks. Would be curious to reverse sear smoking a 3 inch steak on KJ charcoal vs doing the same on KJ pellet and have testers trying them and give feedback. I'd think the charcoal still has better taste but the pellet is a little lower maintenance. Do you agree? Also other question: how do you clean the deflectors, the sloroller, and the grates? you seem like a person who can answer this question for a guy with an out-of-warranty BGE: Would the Kamado Joe Classic firebox fit in a large BGE? I'm going to need to replace my BGE firebox soon and since it is used and out of warranty, I thought the KJ multi-piece firebox might be a more reliable and cheaper replacement option. Do you still have access to a LBGE? And if so can you measure?
@SmokingDadBBQ

great question. the firebox ceramic has a lifetime warranty so I would push your dealer and escalate to bge if they say no first. doing some reading the kJ does fit but it changes up where the grids fit vs the felt line requiring a new racking system like the PS woo from cgs is what I saw several people say on the big green egg forum. I hope you get your free replacement as that is the easiest. I had a few replaced over the years ... and while it was pulling teeth they eventually did

Smoking Dad BBQ Cool, looking forward to it. Only have a mini Kamado with a 10.5 inch grill, but I have been dipping my toe into low and slow on it... and a larger Kamado Joe is on the cards (probably a Classic).

What about mixing charcoal and pellet? Try and put lit charcoal in the centre and pellets in the exterior (like in a minion method)!

Haha that was very funny/interesting. I'm sure you probably went right in to have a shower and wash off the smoke :) I think you could pull it off still, but you would have to start with a cup or two of pellets and then be a human auger to keep adding them and control the temp that way. The KJ would hold the heat well, so you probably wouldn't have to add them too often. The Yoders go up to 600F, but most of the others cap at 500F. I'll be curious to see how the KJ Pellet grill does, it's pretty expensive for it's size.

Hey, just curious if you’ve tried this with charcoal pellets since they are already taken down to just carbon? My guess is that you could run a lower temperature without having to worry about dirty smoke. My apologies if this is already been asked/answered. I didn’t want to read all 170+ comments to try to find the answer.

I think the Kamado Joe is great but I can’t get behind the Pellet Joe. It’s so crazy expensive compared to other grills. You can get a made in America Yoder for the same price that is 2-3 times the size. Great video though.

for me I’d buy a classic 2 with an iKamand and save nearly half or do what you said if I wanted a proper pellet ... but I’m not the target audience for this

good - prevents me from trying something like this ... or perhaps just to get rid of mosquitos? Pellets are lying way to tight, there is no airflow, nothing can burn, even with forced air. In your last try it looks like you had a fire on the sides or even below the basket? Again, the tightly packet pellets are just smoldering (at best). Way too much smoke for my taste, and miles away from a nice clean burn. thanks for rescuing from an experiment like this ... and recommend a way to kill mosquitos and keep the neighbors inside!
@SmokingDadBBQ

it was a hot mess lol. Yes the fails were clearly way to many pellets and once we got a fire we had a few small ones in different locations throughout the grill. and no mosquitoes in site still lol

The poor combustion really highlighted the smoke dispersion abilities of the sloroller. I think the thing that I question is what's the point of a pellet kamado? Isn't the point of a Kamado to be able to run at 225F for 18hrs or at 900F, but the pellet Kamado seems to be able to smoke, but maxes at 600F... so does that make it the worst of both worlds in that you can't get nuclear hot, and it doesn't have the room of a traditional offset pellet grill?
@SmokingDadBBQ
@SmokingDadBBQ 3 жыл бұрын
i personally think it appeals to the gas griller who sees pellet grills and kamados... traditional pellets struggle with searing, pizza etc. but are easy to use. A kamado can do it all, but the learning curve is off-putting for some or scary. I think while its not me as the target audience, it speaks to that person that wants more from their bbq, but doesn't want to sign up to a multi year learning curve is my guess

What a crazy experiment. I don't see the point of a Pellet Joe - the only advantage of a pellet grill is "set it and forget it," and a Kamado with a thermostatic controller is close enough to that while being much better at things like grilling, searing, etc.
@SmokingDadBBQ
@SmokingDadBBQ 3 жыл бұрын
I'd like to try it ... but wonder why not do a classic 2 with an iKamand? $1200 + 249 i think vs. 2k for the pellet joe. gives you the same set it and forget it function, plus hotter temp potential / more versatility .... but i recognize i am not the target audience for this
@praetorxyn
@praetorxyn 3 жыл бұрын
Smoking Dad BBQ Yeah. The other advantage of Pellet grills is that they tend to have space for like 4 or 5 briskets, etc. An 18" Kamado isn't going to fare so well there. For $2000, I'd just spend the extra $600 or so and get a Yoder YS640 with competition cart if I wanted a Pellet grill.

Use a metal kitchen colander used for straining as your pellet basket. I have one from the dollar store with many small straining holes and use it to hold my charcoal or pellets. Much better than a basket with wide spaced bars.
