Glue the hole in the side of the pen!! When the propellant reaches that tiny hole it vents and throws the rocket off course.

@thekingofrandom I think I know why those few pens went off at bad angles. I noticed that there is a hole in the sides of those pens as a manufacturing standard. If they were not sealed up tight gas would be forced out that hole on the side messing with the trajectory of the pen rocket. In one of the slow motion clips you can see that happening because of that.

Also, if the straw is placed at the center of balance on the side instead of the bottom of the pen, you will get a more stable launch. Balance the rocket on your finger and place the straw so the middle of the straw is at the center of balance.

You might get more consistent results if you tamped (pressed) the powder in with a dowel instead of just pouring it. Air pockets in the poured powder are likely why you get some sputtering and inconsistent burn rates there.

By packing smoke mixture in first the longer burning smoke stage could be triggered after the thrust stage. This might aid visibility and recovery. You could also make a nose cone from the cap that hides a spring and ribbon between the cap and body. Then tie it down with something that will burn away like an elastic or thread that loops past the nozzle and thus secures the recovery system.

Part of your launch stability issue is how small your metal pole is compared to how wide the straw is. It would also help to be around a foot longer and angle your rocket fins in a fashion the maximizes the spin of said rocket :) if you use a metal tube instead of plastic you can pack it down a bit more for more thrust!

Glow sticks are more heavy and it might make the rocket fly in the wrong direction where as an LED is lightweight and it only needs two button cell batteries Plus it can be installed inside the top of the pen since it's quite small of a Circuit also depending on what pen you use and LED can alter the chances of success for the rocket to fly straight up

We did plenty of experimenting with rockets in high school, and by lengthening the fins so that it goes at least half way up from the bottom of the rocket will help it fly straighter.
@michaelbyrnee9584
@michaelbyrnee9584 5 жыл бұрын
As has been previously mentioned: glue the small hole. In addition, increase the length of the guide straw to 2", weigh the fins on a gram scale to ensure each weighs the same, and use hot glue sparingly. The lift-off and flight-line will be much straighter. What better way to recycle all those used-up pens! Nice project.

I got excited when I saw Grant but then shortly realized it was his ad for his T-Shirts.

What would happen if you were to replace the sugar rocket propellant with a compacted version of this propellant? Would it explode or would produce a more controlled burn?

Fill them maybe 80% with zink/sulfur mixture and 20% with slower burning smoke powder so they make a trace :-)

This is an awesome DIY to do with your family. Tons of fun for a few bucks and the "rockets" appear to be reusable........ if you can find them, lol.

Wouldn't it be easier to pull pen nib out then poke a metal skewer to poke out the stubborn end? And spray paint it so will help to see it. Really cool video though!

One of the reasons it’s going squint is cuz there’s a hole in the side of the pen

To find them you could add the touch powder Grant made in a previous video and when they landed a plume if purple smoke would go off

I just imagine the teache saying,”What’s that?” And you’re like,”A ROCKET.” And she says,”you can’t have that” and then you take off the ear plug part, then say,”I don’t care” really cool and then fire it at her face. Sorry. I had fun with this. 😛😋

Glue the straw closer to the center of the rocket for better stability. Invent a parachute to allow the rocket to return to ground slowly and make more fun to track..
