Our sub-irrigated planter (SIP) bucket video has become our most popular video, so I thought I would show you all how we are improving on things for this year. Enjoy!

Hey I noticed your video. You have probably upgraded to the self watering rain gutter garden system by now. I was where you are in this video, but have since gone to the self watering system. Way easier, plus it allows you to leave for a couple of weeks and not have to worry about watering tomatoes. Keep up the good work

Good design, but a lot of water wasted. I live in an area where drought is frequent, so every drop of water counts. To limit the water loss, you can simply pipe the overflow to the next bucket, and to the next bucket, all the way to the end. Just make sure you have a container to catch the water of the last overflow. Plus, with my suggested setup, you only need one water input pipe going down into the soil. Also, there are designs out there where the water input is on the outside bottom of the bucket. Use 90º elbows.

I have something similar except where you have drainage on each bucket pouring out I linked the buckets together so as one reach overflow the next fills etc no water wastage

Have you considered an ( in-line float cut off ball ) use a ping pong type ball in each pipe going into the bucket. Use a coupler, hot glue, a solid ball( same size as the FCOB ) and a piece of card stock. Place round piece of card stock (O.D. Same as I.D. of coupler ) place inside coupler. Cover with hot glue about 3/16”. Let it soft set then press the solid ball onto the glue and hold it under Cold water for a fast set. Drill appropriate size hole through hardened glue & card stock. Place FCOB into pipe, install seat coupler you just made, attach feed line & add water .

Well that was an interesting way of watering plants! How did it work for you overall and in the end? Could you Possibly hook up a hose and just turn on the hose to water all of it? If so maybe a timer could be put on that

Have you though about running pea traps or another piece of pvc along the top with drainage holes for more pressure and more consistent waterings? I feel like if you had a way to level the water before it runs into the buckets it would work better

Are your tomato plants indeterminate? What cages do you use for a plant like early girl?

If your soil had clay in it, you can dig a trench and puddle it (knead it with your feet while flooding it) then let it settle out and dry, to give you a trench that will hold water. Then you can set your buckets in the trench and flood irrigate them. Easier is to plant potatoes in the ground and hill them up

Why not just lay a water hose over all the buckets. Cut holes in the hose.

Do these need the soil watered until the roots reach the reservoir or will the water leach upward from the reservoir or what?
@WelcomeBackWoods
@WelcomeBackWoods 3 жыл бұрын
Nope, the moisture will wick upwards and keep the soil perfectly moist.

Now if you could capture the spill over to recirculate the water. That way you don't use or lose that much water.

Doubtful, but he’s just growing plants in them, not eating from them. Earthen soils are not approved as food-safe either.

Problem I'm seeing is the water being channeled to the bottom of the buckets, and the roots way up at the top. They'd have to grow a bunch for the roots to find the moisture. I'd drill holes in the pipes to let the water seep out higher up. How MUCH did it cost for 100 pvc fittings????
@WelcomeBackWoods

If you watch the original video of the series, you’ll see that we have a solo cup with holes filled with soil that hangs down into the water reservoir. Through capillary action, this wicks the perfect amount of water up into the larger bucket to help the plants grow until the roots reach the water below. I had all the fittings left over from various other projects. Thanks for watching!

@@WelcomeBackWoods OK...I didn't see that video. I'm a big proponent of 5 gallon buckets. I half-bury milk jugs with holes in the bottom of mine. I can see where watering all at once is a plus!

Since they all have an overflow, they all get the same. However I’d agree the first one wastes more water.
