I have used Big Wally's Plaster Magic and Plaster and I can say that it really works. I have horsehair plaster ceilings with lath. I left my washers in because I think that the is hold better. I fixed my ceiling at least 10 years ago and it is still holding.

Pushing out the the old plaster between the lath forms a better bond since it keys in between the wood strips. Just push it through, no need to try and completely remove it. Great video.

Its best if the keys are also removed so the new plaster can mushroom through the lathe.

Thank you for this video. As a diy’r I wish you had a voiceover of what you we’re doing sped up. Were you wetting the plaster with a sponge. I think I can not tackle this ceiling. A drywaller gave me a quote of 3400 for a hole that same size. Thanks

Did you knock out the old plaster keys before you out the new scratch coat on?

What about knocking out the old plaster between the lath? Is the new compound you’re applying supposed form that mushroom key? I’ve been so afraid of diy’ing this project and it falling down. Thank you for this post. Song: A Hard Day’s Night?

Its not a bad idea to knock the old Plaster from between the lath, but not necessary. You can buy sheets of mesh to stuff in there. You just want the Plaster to grab onto something besides itself.

OMG I just discovered your stuff and my hair is standing on end...question about this project and the materials: I have some common plaster cracks on the ceiling of my 1924 Craftsman that I would like to fix. No major damage, just cracking, and some areas that might be de-laminating but are not cracked. If the Plaster Magic conditioner and adhesive were to be used on both sides of the crack, could I then simply scrape out a "v" in the crack and then fill it? Similarly, could I use the conditioner and adhesive to pro-actively arrest an area that might be de-laminating?

Yes to all the above. Works great in that application.

Our house was built in 1944. Slump block walls with plaster. The ceilings are not drywall as they didn’t have drywall back then. It’s much thicker and plaster like. Walls and ceilings have been getting cracks. How would you suggest the wall patch? I don’t think the screws will go into block and wouldn’t want to make holes in block? Also the ceiling. ??

You can use the same system but you have to use a 2x4 and plywood or some other method than the clamps to press the plaster back into place while the adhesive cures.

You should remove the old keys in between the wood or add some diamond mesh because you’re plaster can’t create new keys because the space is blocked

Seems like using a syringe to apply the conditioner would be a better method.

Did you make the holes between the lath or threw the lath?

Hallway ceilings, just cover it with 1/2” Sheetrock, walls, I would take the time to patch. Check out Kirk Giordano’s plaster repair videos.

You would advice going over the whole ceiling with Sheetrock instead??
@lukebrown4184
@lukebrown4184 3 жыл бұрын
@@MWCRUSADER0508 for a skinny old house hallway ceiling that’s 3ft wide, and Sheetrock is 4ft wide. Yes. All day long, I would not waste time on a plaster repair, just put Sheetrock right over it. Don’t use regular paper tape in the inside corners, use the surecorner, with the metal or plastic reinforcing strips. So much faster, and will look better.

why did you remove the plaster washers? I thought they're suppsed to stay

This is a system that uses the washers to hold the plaster right while an adhesive sets up. Thank nice the adhesive is cured then you no longer need the washers which makes patching much easier.

I have been plastering since 1983 and i have never done this foolishness. Bond the wood lathe with plaster weld including the existing plaster and onto the surface about 3in. Then attach 3.4 expanded metal lathe over the top of the bonded wood lathe. Then just plaster it with perlited gypsum plaster, then finish to match existing. Respectfully, Ed.

Agreed, I started plastering in 1996… this system is an overpriced bandaid that won’t last as long as your advice! Which is how I was taught as an apprentice!

As a professional mud slinger I enjoy watching these videos for a good laugh. I promise you if this was painted as it was last shown... the patch looks like hot garbage. I mean... he didn't even skim it with finish this was just 2 crazy thick basecoats and he didn't use mesh... this patch looks like shit and will start cracking within a couple years. You been warned!
