DIY Plaster Dining Table Using Joint Compound | IKEA Hack

In this video, I show you how to use joint compound to achieve a plaster texture on my old IKEA dining table from start to finish. It's a super easy product to work with, and I've had great results in multiple projects now. Plus, it is very affordable and can be picked up from your local hardware store. Glad you find it helpful! My only tip now having done this a while ago, would be to make the top smooth and not textured! It will be easier to keep clean. Best of luck in your project!!

Love it 😍 I just made a plaster coffee table and should have used the joint compound. The plaster of Paris dry mix was very messy and hard to work with but still came out great 🤗

I made a night stand with plaster of paris and you are right it was super messy and dried so fast but it was fun to make! does the join compound chip/flake a lot or did you get a good seal and hold?

@@mylifeasjessio I haven’t had any issues with it cracking, chipping, or flaking off. It bonds really well! I always seal it with primer + paint for higher traffic use projects.

@@mylifeasjessio It didn’t flake for me, I will say just a little spot. But I did use some drywall tape to help stick to the surface.

I think you could have used a gloved hand to add the joint compound to those hard to cover curves

How does it handle moisture and being wiped with a wet rag? When I joint compounded my pot planter, the water destroyed it, making it crumble. Thanks

Joint compound is water soluble so that’s why you need to seal it with paint! And then you’re just dealing with a painted surface so I used semi gloss which is easier to wipe down.

How has it held up after a year? Any chipping, or does sealing it stop that? I was having a debate earlier with my dad he doesn't think it will hold up or even stick

Hi! It’s held up great. I will say the one thing I wish I did differently was make the top completely smooth by sanding so it would be easier to clean. The texture allows for dirt/grime/whatever to get stuck in the tiny holes. But otherwise I love it 🥰

Held up great. My only regret is not making the top as smooth as possible for cleaning purposes. Otherwise I'm still in love with the result.

So, my (and I found out most) premixed drywall compound reactivated ands softens with water or humidity. Have you had any issues with this since making this?

No it’s been totally fine and I think it’s bc I’ve sealed it with paint and it’s indoors. My main issue is actually wishing I had made it completely smooth on top rather than textured. I will probably have to smooth it out at some point since it’s just hard to clean right now!

@@stephyoungren well, awesome! Thanks for the reply. I am trying to get a stucco texture on a bathroom cabinet. I tried wetting my joint compound and it just wiped right off so I think I'm going with the old Liquitex ceramic stucco medium I have. That held up just fine. Thanks for the tip about the top. I was wondering what I was going to do for that so I guess I am going to try something besides the texture 👌😃

Thanks! I chose a semi gloss paint thats easily washable. If I would do this again, I’d actually make the top as smooth as possible. The texture is the hardest part to keep clean.

The joint compound is water soluble so would need to be sealed with paint and I think if you used outdoor paint it could work? But not entirely sure. Sorry!
