I've been working with plastic since 2011. This information is legit. I use a aluminium polish (amongst a whole host of different things in my trick bag..) I can't think of anything more to add, than well done. Plastic seems to behave the same way in Australia. (If you take your time, you'll be amazed.... a non professional can learn this. I was 44, and had never worked in a trade before.)

If you think about it, the original shine on the plastic was the result of the heat that was in the original mold. To a degree, that's what you are emulating here. You have gotten the right balance of heat and polishing compound. I know many people will laugh , but people that are very good at this are nail techs. They really have some cool tools especially their emory boards that I love to use in metal work. It is amazing the shine they get in the work they do going slowly one grit at a time. (of course they are talking the whole time HaHa) This is "Thee" ultimate video in restoring plastic. Thanks

This makes more sense than the razor blade method that gives you tons of flat spots. The foam pad on the sander is a must to keep contours. He doesn't mention stating away from edges with the lower grit paper, but you should or you will get flat spots..

I live in Haverhill and went riding out there in Leominster once with a crew of buds. I was on an 01kx250 i still have. Some of the sickest riding i've ever done! Some crazy sand pit and a ton of trails to/from it. Cops came,chased everyone (like 30-40 other guys) out of there. Fun fun stuff,i'll never forget it! Tried getting everyone to go back again but no one ever wanted to. That was 20 years ago. Still have a bunch of old 2 strokes and my Raptor,hardly touch em now. Fuck,i'm old lol😩

Hello, I bought a new custom decal kit for my ATV. I have hand sanded the rear fenders using 320, 500, 1200. The fenders are black, but are currently grayish after the sanding. I have a harbor freight buffer with 2 types of foam pads. Should I try to buff the fenders so they are back to black? Or should I just put the decal kit on? The kit does cover most of the fender but not 100% of it.
@McNastyCustomz2 жыл бұрын
the foam pad does not work as well as the wool pad. i would def try to buff it out, if you are going to cover it up anyway you should at least try.

One thing he keeps saying here = do not let plastic get hot and melt. =Be patient and take your time. Let the plastic cool down. Slow speed, low pressure = less heat.

Thanks for the great videos. I see some guys finishing the process with a heat gun instead of the polish. Obviously you way works. What are your feelings about a heat gun to finish it?
@l3dukas8692 жыл бұрын
The heat gun method is a short-time fix and the fading will come back pretty quickly
@McNastyCustomz2 жыл бұрын
heat can work aswell. but i find it doesnt seem to last as long
@FlawleZ31 Жыл бұрын
I actually use a heat gun before the polish. The heat gun will help bring color back but will not leave a glossy finish. That's where the polishing is required.

What tool are you using, and what polishing wheel? Just purchased a orbital polisher and it does almost nothing. Bosch makes a variable speed angle grinder that seems like a good tool? If so, where do I find the right polishing wheel?
@McNastyCustomz2 жыл бұрын
we are using a dewalt buffer and a cotton pad you can get at any auto detail supplier
@kjaydub Жыл бұрын
It’s a rotary- I have a Milwaukee 8in rotary that’s actually not too expensive if you can believe it. It’s great for plastic and gel coat on watercraft. Be very careful on autos if you’ve never used one before

I am doing something similar but when I go to polish I can’t get it to be very mirrored like yours looks... mine becomes very foggy almost. Is it because my drill doesn’t go fast enough?

Worst thing that happened to all vehicals is dumb people attempting to do anything to em. Why would anyone thing a bunch of deep gouges look better than a porked decal. No neither look good but I'll take a hashed decal over a gauled surface any day. My 66 raptor plastic is looking bit tired it's not cracked or seriously damaged but has scratches non fated areas from where decals were and a bunch of white lines from bending. But I spot checked the heat thing seemed to get rid of bout 80% of the white. I'm hoping when weather warms up to sand, heat, polish, remove old decals with a jagged rock or by kicking across the floor till there gone ect to make it look nice again and slap some brandie new decals on it should look as nice as it actually is.
