Working with plexiglass to shape and install the windscreen for the console of the Center Console Project Boat. Quite a change in methods as opposed to working polyester and epoxy resins.

I used to have to drill a lot of plexiglass or Perspex when I was making showcases at the museum, I found that if you touch up a normal drill with a sharpening stone so that it has a little bit of negative rake you won’t ever crack the plastic, slow and steady is the key mate👍

Good video! I watched looking for mounting hardware ideas, just made a replacement screen last week. They sell "acrylic" bits, but really all they are is slightly duller lead edge, they burn a little more cut a little less. Counterintuitive but a dull bit works better for acrylic.

Next time if no helper available - if you can’t get to head side of bolts, cut a slot in the bolt end with a small Drexel cut off wheel, then you can use a small screwdriver to hold the bolt, while tightening the nut. Had to replace a water pick up scoop which had 4 bolts thru the bottom of the keel to tighten from inside. I bored the nylon out of nyloc nuts - to save some time and just used some caulk down low on the threads to hold them.

Great content I was looking at making one for a more complex curve so you gave me some good info . On the top of the windshield to bend it down the windshield on one of my other boats is cut down on the side where the bend would be across the front don’t know if that would help you now though .

Used the same grommet method on my windshield. When I drilled my holes I used regular cobalt drill bits just started small and kept stepping the bits up. Really liking the build, keep up the good work. I’ll be following along. What engine are you hanging on her?

Hey my friend...great job on the windscreen...The drilling part is always the scariest!!! a quick question more as an after thought...if i may... we all know how brittle plexiglass is and drilling it close to the edge opens up the possibility of it cracking or shattering...my thought is this...Would heating the area to be drilled with a heat gun, or torch prior to drilling help??? or hurt ??? Heating it just enough to lesson some of the brittleness...but not enough to soften it or deform it... i haven't tried this option yet...but wondering if anyone else has... My thoughts are anything that could lesson the chance cracking is a bonus... now on a side note... My 20 ft WellCraft center console project I told you about awhile back...... is now on 100% hold... Friday morning my 22 year old daughter was trying to feed our dogs, and my Black Lab decided he was going to get super aggressive towards her... We've been having problems with him...and knew something was going to have to be done soon... She called me into the kitchen, and I averted his focus from her to me, and was trying to calm him down, at the last second, she started to move away, and he tried to go after her...I had ahold of his collar and wouldn't let him go, giving her a chance to get away...(And yes...I knew what was going to happen by doing that)... He turned on me, grabbing my left forearm, and jerking me to the ground...Suffice it to say, it was ugly...911 was called, and transported me to the first hospital, ...8 hours in the ER trying to stabilize the wounds and stop the bleeding...then a second ambulance ride to the Med Center here in Houston for emergency surgery at 5 am the next morning...that lasted about 3 plus hours... The results...35 plus puncture wounds in the left forearm, wrist and hand......each requiring debriding, and extensive cleaning... 3 major lacerations, requiring debriding clean up, and stitches... one in the forearm, (deep muscle and nerve damage), one on the back of the hand, and the worst being my thumb...( joint, tendon sheath, nerves, and severe laceration to the pad)... With all this said... I'm ok...I'm out of commission for a couple months at least...and all projects are shut down... We choose to have our Lab put down, and tested for rabies...(Actually the county required it)... found out Tuesday evening that he was clear, which we knew he was, but had to confirm... It's been suggested that he may have had a brain tumor, as this behavior was so uncharacteristic of him... Hell he'd crawl up in your lap, place his paws on each shoulder, and lay his head on your shoulder like he was your prom date... I'm confident, I'll have full recovery with my fingers... but the thumb is still to badly damaged, and too early in the process to tell... Sorry to ramble on, about my personnel stuff... You keep doing what you're doing, and I'll keep watching until I'm back up and at it again... .. If ya know anyone in the Houston area that want's to help out an old fat gimped up Vet, work on a boat...send em my way!!! lol... Take care, and looking forward to next weeks video...

Why Plexiglass and not acrylic?
@barrylukebuilds7894
@barrylukebuilds7894 9 ай бұрын
Good question. I think the acrylic is a little more scratch resistant but the plexiglass is less brittle. I think it is kinda like which one is better, Ford or Chevy. Thanks for watching and thanks for asking. Barry
