That is the part I’m struggling with, how do you set up the velcro, it goes off camera when you show that part. Would love to know how you do it. The other parts are finished and it’s awesome! Thank u for sharing this video!

i’m going to build two of these this weekend, and i suggest placing the weaved tape in between the black and white boards, and reinforcing with strong glue so the hinge tape seam will be hidden and also not peel. i believe this edit or amendment is worth of a note to this video. but as many have said, this is the best tutorial available. thank you.

yes, taped edges last longer. nicole, definitely do that especially with that much movement of those pieces. and shon, absolutely agree - this is the neatest trick ever. will make me one. thanks nicole!

After watching about every videos on the subject I ended up following this method like a pastry recipe and I am more than very happy with the result. Not only V flats are hard to come by here (Amsterdam) but they’re also super expensive ( eurozone :-( ) so yes it took some planning and it was a bit time consuming but I actually really enjoyed myself mounting them and the result is about perfect. So thank you so so much for this video, your method is by far the best out there, also a big thank to the comment that mentioned the use of coins to counter balance the gaffer that really helped. I also used a predefined square of paper to help cutting the gaffer tape faster and more accurately. I am thinking of perhaps taping the edges to make them sturdier but I am not sure how this will affect the use of the V flats as background, so I’ll wait and see if that’s necessary. Now I have two beautiful Vflats I am really proud of, and with the 300+ € I saved I can buy some extra gears :-) ! Thank you so much again for this amazing video!!!

Hi Nicole, thanks for your tutorial. I followed your instructions and the result was perfect. Your help was not only useful but essential. I would like to add a few tips, if I may: when placing the tape on the bottom part to after join the top part, I put coins on the tape as a counterweight to help easily separate them; and then I used a tripod with a clamp to hold the top part of the foam board (I put cardboard between the clamp and the foam board to avoid denting). This is almost a miracle considering that I am not very skillful :-) Again, thanks to you I now have two really cool V-Flats ;-)

Immediately subscribed!!! A million thanks! This is absolutely the sturdiest and most versatile design in all of KZfaq! Much better than using a single strip of tape to create hinges. You've saved me $350 (2 sets of V-world V-flats are about $400!). And I'll definitely be buying all the products with your affiliate links, that cup of coffee is much disserved! 😁 Could you explain how you installed the velcro strips though? That area was not visible in the video. Sry, I'm all thumbs when it comes to crafts 😅 Also, compared to portable dark flags that come in reflector kits (for negative fill), how good are the dark panels? In the video, they seemed to be reflecting a bit of light. Thanks!
@NicoleBedardPhotography
@NicoleBedardPhotography 3 жыл бұрын
Thank you! I appreciate your kind words. As for the Velcro, I purchased sticky back Velcro and added one to the very top to make sure the gap was minimal. I later added one to the bottom of the top section. The black panels are pretty close, but it depends on shooting environments etc. Happy this video helped!

1- great clean work. Nicely done 2- not sure if I’d do this only because adding the time and effort (and the uncertainty of making something new from scratch) will make the cost savings not worth the pain. They seem to be listed for $370 for 2 ($180 each) so $107 plus the time and effort come pretty close to $180 Still if they were like $80 i would def have made it your way

@NicoleBedardPhotography
@NicoleBedardPhotography 3 жыл бұрын
@@savvicreationz4367 Sorry for any confusion. If you have two pieces of the tape, reverse one. So one will have a sticky side up and the other will have the sticky side down. The middle, where they attach to each other, will not be sticky on top or bottom. The middle is what will rest on the foam, while the sticky side attach to the face of the boards. I hope this helps!

When taping the hinge you held the boards vertically. They seemed to be basically touching each other with the edges flush. Do you need to leave any space at all to ensure they can hinge successfully?

The foam board is a standard type found at a craft or art store. Sorry I don’t know if it’s a “polystyrene”. It definitely sticks since it’s a paper like coating. It’s not slick or plastic.

With paper I would have had to find large rolls to avoid seams, but wouldn't want any bubbles either. Paper is not as durable and could easily tear as well. But certainly try it out if you can find rolls of large enough.

Ma’am. Your instructions on your page is incorrect “ Attach one sticky side to one non-sticky side. The space in the middle that is non-sticky on BOTH sides will be the part you rest on the foam board.”

This is awesome, thanks for sharing. How do you think it would hold up with Faux brick panel glued to one side ?

Depending on the product used. You don't want to add too much weight to one side for fear of it tipping. Maybe look into peel and stick wallpaper that looks like faux brick.

Is there any way to hide these hinges also ? Another question is these Hinges become very loose in very short time ( gaffers tape) Any suggestions ? Thanks

Hi. The best option is to take a long strip of the tape and cover over all the individual pieces. They haven't come loose for me. Gaffers tape is pretty durable stuff.

I’ve watched many diy videos for v-flats and this is the method I will use when I get the materials in. I’m wondering how well they are holding up now that it’s been over a year since the video was made. Does the gaffers tape still stick? Some of the videos show them adding spray adhesive to the gaffers tape, which looks like a pain to do. I’ve found a Canadian supplier that sells 32”x40” 3/16” thick foam. My studio is small so I think I’ll be content with 64” wide and 80” high.

Hi, I'm so glad you find the video helpful. The gaffers tape has held up great. I have had to add some spray adhesive to one section of the boards (between the white and black boards) Otherwise it has held up great!

Hi Nicole, after you stuck the two halfs together did repeat the same process with the sorsy adhesive?
@NicoleBedardPhotography

Yes, after sticking the two together I sprayed the adhesive and attached it to a full square to make sure it was sturdy enough. Let me know if that is clear enough.
