The most important step that I found was to take some time to class the reservoir. I serviced mine a few months ago and it didn't make a big difference but last night I decided to do it again but spent around 20 minutes cleaning the reservoir. I literally got big chunks of solid sludge that was preventing fresh fluid from flowing freely through the pump and now the difference is night and day. Thank you sir you're the best.

I've watched about half a dozen videos on this topic and this is the most thorough method. Of course not everyone has a vacuum pump like that.

Honestly, I watch several online Auth Tech channels, but this is was the best way to flush a PS system and explained in 5min. Doing this way you eliminate the risk of getting air into the system. Thank you so much for sharing...

I use the power steering pump pressure to flush my steering system. I remove return line from tank & attach a hose to a pan . Have someone operate ignition key and dump flush fluid into it until fluid comes out clean . Then top off as required.

Wow! Just used this procedure on my 2012 Mazda CX-9 and worked like a charm! I used a $8 vacuum suction device from Harbor Freight. Had to remove the coolant reservoir to gain access, which took 1 minute. Thanks a million!!!

Nice video. I invested in a Mityvac evacuator to change oil in a 2004 Mercedes per the shop manual and have used it for tranny fluid evacuation and partial power steering evacuation. Sometime you wonder if spending $100+ on a tool is worth it. This video convinces me I made the right choice. I have four vehicles dating nine to 17 years old that I maintain myself and this tools is well worth every penny.

Great, Got a mightyVac. They work awesome. Actually about to replace my powersteering pump on my 5.0 Explorer but I think before I do I'm going to flush out the fluid so the new one will have some nice clean Amsoil for the install.

I purchased a second hand 2009 Subaru Forester which came with "3 years ""free"" servicing" at the dealer that sold it. Among other things that all of a sudden need a "service" after just 1 visit to them, power steering was one of them and they wanted $195 for this job. I'm pretty handy on the tools so after some googling I found this video, seemed the easiest method, so got a fluid pump ($30) and the ATF fluid for my car ($15) and spent 30 minutes extracting and replacing the fluid. It is basically as easy as is shown here and worth the cost of the pump just for this Vs jacking up the car and using the steering to pump out the fluid. I also used it to suck out my brake reservoir and also my clutch. All up I saved almost $300 after the cost of extra tools and fluids from what they wanted to charge me. I am sure most would know but you cannot do this same process on brakes. You can suck out the reservoir to almost empty but need to bleed the brake lines the correct way. KZfaq that, it's not hard for someone with a simple spanner set. Well worth the time to learn how to do these things yourself.

Very thorough service joel! looks great. At the nissan dealer i work at we use a bg flush machine that can either evacuate or fill the reservoir. it does a so so job but the fluid never looks as clean as you got it with this service procedure! keep up the good video's!

You need to completely dry it off first before pouring the ATF into the PS reservoir. ATF and brake cleaner don't mix well.

WoW! This is going to save sooooooo much time. The unit link you provided seems to have a bad reputation tho. Either the EWK or OEMTOOLS are better options if anyone wants something that wont explode on you. And with the EWK you can hook up your air compressor to make it do all the pumping for an even faster job. Once again, thank you for showing me this!!!

You must turn the wheel to the right an left to help push out the old stuff in the rack and pinion area as you only clean the lines an did you bypass the pump too?

After you have done that and finally crank up the car and start turning the steering left and right, does the resevoir start to bubble up with air getting released and need to top if off again? And how many quarts of oil would you suggest to keep handy to do this?

Love your vid, Bought the mighty vac on Amazon.Works,Okay, only thing is the upper hose to the cooler did not suck out any power steering fluid.I did unplug that hose under the reservoir.A lot of fluid came out, black of course.But I tried pumping out fluid from that hose and nothing, no fluid came out I did plug the bottom reservoir. Maybe I pumped out of the incorrect hose. I have a Ford Fusion 2008, 4cylinder engine and of course the video is on a Toyota. Can you give me some insight what i did incorrect. ...and how much does the Mighty Vac evac tool cost? I had really good luck spending like an hour cleaning the reservoir off the car as you did, only starting with WD-40 and plugging the two holes at the bottom Sloshed it all around and let it sit for 20 minutes or so and the WD 40 turned very black. I dumped the used WD 40 out and all the gunk that came out with it and took some long wood shafted Q tips( medical supply house) to scrub/ scrape what I could off the bottom of the reservoir. Sloshed some more fresh WD 40 and repeated a time or two. Then went in with the brake cleaner or even a 50/50 mix of fresh ATF and acetone since the ATF has fantastic detergent properties and the solvent characteristics of the acetone help with getting the crud loose on the areas you can't reach with the long Q tips. Foam swabs work okay too, but some don't like the petroleum and the foam tips soon seperate from the shaft. After sloshing the Acetone/ATF cocktail around, I filled the reservoir with full strength Simple Green to degrease the interior of the reservoir and after sloshing it around, rinsed the interior of the reservoir with hot water. Took a hair dryer on a warm setting to dry out the inside of the unit. A new reservoir from Toyota is $160 wholesale and the Chinese knock offs on ebay are still about half of that price. You can't do anything about the discoloration of the plastic, but this process seemed to be a cost effective method of cleaning the reservoir. Some folkks aren't as anal retentive as I am, but Poweer Steering repairs on a Toyota are astronomical even when you do them yourself. What I needed to learn from your video was which hose was the outlet hose and I thank yo for that!!

So I have a 2007 Tundra withat same type plastic reservoir. Unfortunately I'm had issues getting the lower hose clamp with the pliers (going to buy a 90* pliers). The upper hose is hard for me to pill off. But more discouraging is the stupid plastic holder is NOT sliding out of the metal bracket!!! At any rate I will try again in a few days.
