This is the easiest way I know to make professional looking stickers, labels and decals, even in full colour and all you need is a laser printer. A great alternative to other methods such as engraving or etching.

That's a good way of making labels/stickers. You can also buy laser printable water slide decal sheets which can look very professional. It comes in clear or white which is useful as a laser printer can't print white.

...unless it is a CMYW or CMYKW printer. Too bad they start around $2500.

@@ronnetgrazer362 sorry only just found your comment, KZfaq you are slacking, I use the local copy centre for mine. I just give them the sheets of slide material and they print them.

I had a similar panel to do. I laser printed onto white cardstock then cut out the pattern with a vinyl cutter (which had options to print out with registration marks, align, and cut accurately). Then I soaked the card in polyurethane overnight. It came out like thin styrene sheet but with colours, and was strong enough to mount switches etc to.
@AndysMachines
@AndysMachines 5 ай бұрын
I might have to try that. Perhaps the polyurethane will give the toner some UV resistance too?

Nice fun video. If you print on the glossy side of shipping label backing you should be able to miss out the soaking in water stage. The backing for the clear vinyl may be suitable for printing on to if cut to a suitable size (I've never tried that) and then transfer over the the sticky vinyl.

I wonder if you could iron the backside of the paper before soaking and get some thermal transfer of the toner to the vinyl? Super low heat, of course...

Awesome! Another method is to print directly to sticky film tape, cut it out and stick it on. The colors and images will be more vibrant. Now, here's a special trick. Spray over the entire surface with several coats of clear, UV resistant lacquer spray. Allow it to completely dry and cure to a hard finish. You may leave it as is, or you can follow it up with a 1200 to 2000 grit wet sanding with a final buff. The results will be stunning with no visible ridge lines. You can stop at around 2000 to give it more of a matte finish.

I like the sanding idea to remove the visible edge of the clear sticker!
@bobweiram6321
@bobweiram6321 Жыл бұрын
@@AndysMachines I think it works mainly because of the lacquer. I think the sticker is too soft to sand.

You can procure water slide decal paper and print directly to this material. This will stick to smooth surfaces. You can get this in clear, and white depending on what you want for the background.

Gives surprisingly effective results - might have to try that myself (albeit with tape and only B&W sadly) ...although, isn't the stop sign normally an octagon rather than a hexagon? (Sorry, I kept looking at it, wondering why it didn't look quite right to me)
@AndysMachines

i mean, is not a bad idea, but if you are using a laser printer in the first place you could print straight into the vinyl sheet, or buy self adhesive printer paper if you dont mind the white background

Want me to point out something that has the potential to perpetually bug you?…. If not look away now! Still here? Ok, here it goes…. Stop signs are octagonal, not hexagonal 😊😊 (Don’t say I didn’t warn you, massive fan of the channel btw!)
@AndysMachines
@AndysMachines Жыл бұрын
Yes, somebody else pointed that out. I know they are octagonal of course, I think I just had my polygon tool set to hexagon and didn't realise. It doesn't actually bug me, I lived with 'stop' scrawled on in sharpie for years!

That's a great solution! Another option would be printing with the laser printer directly on top of the vinyl, you have to put a clear coat on top of it for protection, after printing, as the tonner can scratch easily... I've done that with white and transparent vinyl sheets. There are proper sheets for sale, I have used them, but I also used commonly find vinyl sheets, no problem with my Hp printer, don't know if it's valid for all brands, so BE CAREFUL if you want to try this method, it can potentially damage your printer!! About the drawing software, which one are you using?
@AndysMachines
@AndysMachines Жыл бұрын
I know there are various special laser sheets for doing things like this, but I've never used them. I'd be a bit nervous putting vinyl sheets directly through a laser printer, if they melted it would be very bad both for the printer and my lungs. You can buy special 'laser vinyl' sheets for this purpose, I'm not sure if they are actually PVC. The drawing software was Vcarve pro (Vectric) which I much prefer to eg. Fusion 360 for 2D work.

That's V-carve pro by Vectric which is very useful for all kinds of 2D/2.5D design, CAD (exports gcode), vinyl cutting etc. The other software I used was GIMP (freeware).
