Pattern Making Instructions
Front Bodice
- lower underarm by 3/4”- 1”
- create rounded square neckline using bust radius from the bust point to establish desired depth of the neckline
- pivot waist dart to side seam - make dart end 1.5” from bust point
- pivot shoulder/armhole area about 3/8” towards centre to eliminate neckline gaping
- add button extension (explained later)
Back bodice
- lower underarm by 3/4”- 1” (must be same as front)
- create rounded square neckline
- extend waist dart to ‘half back’ line and close the dart
- this piece will be on fold or mirror it to create the full pattern piece
Sleeve
- shorten block to desired length
- section equally and spread about double the width
- trace around sleeve to smooth out
- add 1.5” to the hem for the ruffle
Skirt Front
- cut a line from dart paint to hem then pivot on dart end to close dart
- shorten to desired length
- add button extension
Button extension (buttons will be placed on the centre front line)
- establish button diameter and divide by two (3/8” / 2 = 3/16”)
- add 1/8” or 1/4” (3/16”+1/8” = 5/16” rounded to 3/8”)
- mark a notch with your final sum (3/8”)
- For the attached facing double your sum (3/8” x 2 = 3/4”)
Button Marker
- A button marker is created without seam allowance to mark button hole placement on the final sewn garment
- To create trace out button extension and part of the bodice, make a squiggly line on the inside to indicate it is not a pattern piece but a marker
- Buttons will be placed on the centre line
Button Placement
- place buttons 1.5” apart on the bodice and upper skirt, then 3” for the rest of the skirt
- make sure a button is placed at the bust point
- button hole width is your button diameter plus 1/8”-1/4” (3/8”+1/8” = 1/2”)
- button is placed in the centre of the buttonhole. If it is at the top of the garment it is placed an 1/8” from the top of the button hole
Add Seam allowance
-1/2" for regular seams
-1/4" for enclosed seams or whatever you prefer!
