Great explanation and display. One suggestion. At the 1/2-3/4" bottom drain pipe, instead of cutting and adding couplings, add a 'threaded union' between bottom 'out of barrel' drain to t and you can un-thread each line. I would go with Schedule 40-1" drain line not the cheap stuff, then keep it covered too and it will last as long as the 2" Schedule 40 also.

Thank you. Finally someone who took the time to EXPLAIN how the system is put together and how it all works. I've seen several video's people showing their system but not bothering (or knowing how) to explain the connections and functions. Yours is clear and easy to follow, and makes perfect sense. It would appear your system might be upgradeable, but if not - - - . I'm new to this and am starting with only two barrels. Maybe four, but our state law allows collection - get this - no mis-quoting going on - 2500 gallons may be collected and stored on premises. However, if a person goes with rain barrels - they're allowed 2 (TWO) barrels max. I don't think anyone is going to be checking, but you never know what nosey neighbor is going to do or say just to stir up trouble. The mud catcher pipe is good advice. As for a ball - I don't see a need for it. You have it. Maybe it works better than what I'm thinking. I'm thinking just a small hole at the bottom to allow it to drain constantly. If it's draining while raining - no harm. After the rain the mud catcher will empty itself out. Provided the mud doesn't clog up the hole. You didn't say where you put your hole so I'm thinking I may put mine 10 to 15 inches above the bottom. That way it's more likely to drain and not clog. But like anything, it's going to take maintenance. It will have to be cleaned out. I may just put a ball valve at the bottom and a hose bib attachment mid way up so I can flush it without having to disassemble anything. Any suggestions I make here are made in public and the public is at liberty to use any idea I may present. The mud catcher, the sediment barrel (with the soil flange and a screw cap) and the actual barrels used for gardening. Not sure why I'm going with this expense. Every month I'm charged for 10,000 gallons whether I use it or not. I'm currently trying to get the city to change their billing method to charge a monthly fee and then charge for gallons used as opposed to a bulk minimum. If I pay for 10,000 gallons a month then I have the moral, and probably legal right to use all of it. You can't ask me to conserve. But why not?! We're in a drought stricken state. One of many now. You may even figure out where I am. So what. I'll start my system off with two downspouts channeling into a single mud catcher, sediment barrel and rainwater barrels. Probably three in all. I may even add a 12 volt DC pump and a car battery that is kept charged by a small solar panel. Hey! FREE is FREE!

Great video, one thing I noticed with your system that could help cut down on gunk in your supply buckets even further. If you run two pipes in to your first barrel, inlet and outlet, then it would act somewhat like a septic tank. The solids would settle out with the water running out the top. I would take it a step further by running the inlet down into the bottom half of the barrel with the outlet out the top
@ArkansasPrepper

Another note as far as pipe and fittings. Get the gray stuff. Sorry I do not recall the term. It is less UV prone. Maybe a light sanding with 220 grit sandpaper and some krylon spray paint to help block UV Ray's. Worth a try, to get 5-8 years between replacing pipe and fittings

Thanks for taking the time to share your experiance and talent on your DIY rain catcher barrel system. I'm in Australia and unfortunatly we don't appear to have the diversity of range of PVC fittings as yourself in the U.S. Is there any chance you can give a full description of the 2-in /50mm threaded fitting used in the bunge hole of the barrel please?
@ArkansasPrepper
@ArkansasPrepper Жыл бұрын
If you notice there is two bung holes. One thread is different than the other. If you have both caps you can take them to the plumbing or hardware store to match the 2" male coupler. One one bung is a perfect match to the pvc fitting in U.S. 2 in. PVC Schedule 40 MPT x S Male Adapter. www.homedepot.com/p/Charlotte-Pipe-2-in-PVC-Schedule-40-MPT-x-S-Male-Adapter-PVC-02109-1600HD/203825431
