Why did you use exterior screws if you intended to use plugs? A detail but I have to remind myself to keep exterior screws on hand and it's simpler to use plugs to seal the screw holes.
@pepperman9
@pepperman9 3 жыл бұрын
If you would like a few tips. Spend a few bucks on a plug bit, make your own plugs from the same wood you're using. Next time use a 2by for the top rail in the back and 1by for the uprights, using the table saw cut a grove 3/4" into the top rail underside and let the back support pieces go in it, also make a lower rail and do the same. The spaces in between each slat, you just cut small pieces of 1by that fits in there and the groove all but disappears. Me personally, I don't build anything with a straight back, I tilt all my benches chairs a minimum of 15 degrees. I hope this helps you consider more options for your next build, there is nothing wrong with what you made here, just a different approach that will help the quality improve.
@houseoftimbers
@houseoftimbers 3 жыл бұрын
I appreciate the feedback! There are a lot of techniques that I have yet to try. I did just get my drill press set up, so getting a plug bit is a great tip that I'll likely do. I understand the tip for the upright, but is it better than the biscuit joiner or just another technique? I also agree on the 90 degree angle. It's not as comfortable, but the space the bench will be unfortunately doesn't allow for that kind of modification. In another area, I would absolutely want an angle for the back.
@pepperman9
@pepperman9 3 жыл бұрын
@@houseoftimbers It is certainly a much better technique than biscuits, one major reason is most biscuits are not exterior grade.

What kind of screws did you use? What did you also use for the drill bit size?
@houseoftimbers
@houseoftimbers 3 жыл бұрын
I'll have to check on the bit size, but I used regular 2 1/2" screws. If you don't plan on filling the holes after and keep the screws exposed I would recommend using stainless steel screws as they hold up to weather better and won't rust.

I know this is an older post but I have a question. How do I download the plans? Every time I try to download it just takes to different pages to download and install PDF reader/viewer programs even thou I have Adobe Pro installed and then still can't get the plan download after installing 2 of the programs. So anyway I uninstalled both of the programs since they did nothing for me.

To straight for lounging in you need to slant the back 15-18 degrees and the seat 5-7 degrees drop to the back to stop sliding of seat good job though well done ..
@houseoftimbers
@houseoftimbers 3 жыл бұрын
I agree. The bench was going to be placed in a walkway with limited space, so we decided to build it like this to allow for more room to walk past. However, I'll opt to put a slant in if I build one again. Thanks for the input!

@houseoftimbers 2 жыл бұрын
Hi! It's a great bench, but if you have the option I would slant the back to a slight angle to improve comfort. This one had to fit on a narrow sidewalk and didn't allow for that option. However, it is still very roomy and comfortable for an evening sunset 😁

No bother, I love to help! Unfortunately my skills aren't advanced enough to know how to slant the back and maintain the same design. I've just had a few "pro's" suggest slanted backs are more comfortable. You might look at another style to achieve that. I do still think this bench is comfortable and serves great purpose if you are a beginner/intermediate like myself. Wish I could offer better advice.

Thanks for watching! The actual plans are not my own, I included the link for a reference point for those who may want to build the same bench.
