If your Acura TL is randomly stalling out this video will help you fix this problem as well as save you some money. This is a very common and well known issue with 99 00 01 02 03 Acura TL's.

Thank you for this video you are the man for this. I replaced so many parts already and every time it stalled the only way to drive for a while was to keep my key in the crank position. You save me so much $$$ with this

Video helped a lot. That third screw on the black plastic is on the other side of the steering column. I fixed mine and replaced it with a harness from a newer civic.

Thanks for making tuis video, man. Acura was going to charge me 90 bucks for the piece and 80 bucks for labor. Now I will do it myself!

Oh by the way, I figured out where to find the code for the radio (Assuming you haven't already replaced it with an aftermarket radio). Pop the hood and remove the fuse box cover then flip it upside down. You should find a sticker with two numbers...the 5 digit number is your radio code...I'll upload a short video in response to this one for those who don't know how to locate their fuse box lol.

I have the exact model, exact year..... This was such a down to earth, simple install video! Great job!! I'm gonna take your advice an get the auto zone, life time warranty ignition switch... For the next time if any, I'll be ahead of the game since I plan on keeping this car for awhile. It's taken me a LONG time to finally narrow down my problem...Thx. again. p.s.. luckily the previous owner wrote down the radio code in the owners manual! lol.

Thank you for this! I am chasing a phantom idle problem that comes and goes, often with days in between problems and I'm suspicious of this part. Now that I see how easy and cheap it is, I'll be swapping mine. Hopefully that fixes it and if not, I can cross it off the list of possibilities. If it does in fact fix it, I'll be back to let everyone know exactly my symptom as well.

Hey if your still having this problem check the wire that runs to the cruise control across the front near the radiator. My clips aren't on the wire and if I lift the wire up in the air it idles high and when I lower it idles lower. Very strange indeed

Thx 4 taking time 2 do this. Guys I replaced ECU&KEY READER(IMMOBILIZATION CHIP) AND IT DIDN'T FIX IT.I HONESTLY BELIEVE THIS WILL. FIX IT.. (RADIO CODE TIP)- UNDER THE LID OF THE OUTER FUSE PANEL. INSIDE THE LID. 5 CODE FOR THE RADIO. 👊🏻🔥G LUCK

Thank you, I have a 2003 Tl and the radio and other electrical things are remaining on after I take the key out draining the battery .I suspect its a bad ignition switch so this video will be very helpful to me if I have to change it

Thank you for making this video. About your stereo pass code ...check your glove box around the edges or inside for a sticker that has a 6 or 8 digit number. That is your stereo code. :)

Dude, great video! I have a similar case. When I originally ran the car, it would idle to only 500rpm which is pretty low. it did this about 5 times, but after this it would turn on and idle dropped, stalling the car. Could be anything at this point, but i like ur approach out of all the other suggestions from forums and stuff, thanks!

Did mine today. The third/phantom screw is on the keyhole side of the switch on the top of the plastic cover in a tight spot. But with finesse will come out.

could you describe what was the problem, my TL 2002 just stalled after 5 miles driving, waited for a tow one hour later and it started again after turning it twice, new starter and batt and alternator good

the radio code is the the fuse box under the hood. when you remove the fuse box cover, look in the fuse cover and there is a 5 digit number that is your radio code, if you dont find it there open your trunk and you should see a sticker

My man, I have a 97 RL, your ignition switch is exactly like my. I bough the $30 repair book and it pretty much wants me to take apart the entire bottom dash and take off the steering wheel, did you have this being told to you as well? Also my car when I turn it to start, dies immediately. I can even give it gas and it dies immediately. I have replaced my fuel pump and the filter is clean, battery is good, checked the throttle body as well. Any suggestions? The switch comes in tomorrow.

so I followed you tutorial to the T. I got to the point where pounding against a sweet spot on the steering wheel was the only way my 03 TL would start. I now have a new ignition switch installed but I still have to hit it. Can anyone tell me what my next step might be?

David Young just did the same. I also took it off and re placed it several times and still having the sweet spot problem on my 99tl. Gonna run it like this so long as it doesnt die on me while driving. Keep u posted.

Jason, my 2002 Acura TL-S takes a long time to start and sometimes when it starts it misfires until i hit the gas. In a nutshell it just doesn't crank/start smoothly, it has a brand new battery charging system is fine. Only thing i haven't changed are my plugs do you think this could be the ignition switch? The car has never turned off on me while running, the issue is only when starting the car weather its hot or cold.

That was another symptom of my failing ignition switch. Sometimes it would fire right up, and other times it would take nearly a minute to start and outside temp seemed to have no effect either way. If you suspect your spark plugs to be faulty, the easiest way to test that is to jump in your car and from a complete stop accelerate kinda hard. You don't have to put your foot through the fire wall but pick up speed quickly. When accelerating, if your motor seems to "skip" and make the car shake instead of a nice smooth acceleration then definitely replace your plugs. But from my experience it sounds like you need to replace the ignition switch. Good luck bud. Let me know what you find out.

jacejace2011 Well i replaced the ignition switch but that didn't fix it, it still cranks for a long time before it starts even though it does start every single time. Guess its time for a tune up, good thing i still had the receipt for the ignition switch so i got my $58 back. I appreciate the help man.

What causes it to not start up after it been replaced? My car will turn over but cuts off like it's trying to prevent someone from stealing it. Should I call the Acura dealer?

Hey man so I took the old switch out but now the new switch isn’t quite lining up with where it should go, and I’m not getting any crank on my TL. Any advice on what I might’ve done wrong?

i think i might just have too many keys on my chain and when they swing around it causes the car to turn off.. guess ill see.

That sounds like an interlock issue, which was also part of 2 interlock recalls for these models. If this or the switch has not been replaced by Acura, then they will replace them for free. I called my local dealer and told them my VIN, they looked it up, took 2 seconds and saved a buncha doh. repairpal.com/recall/03V423000
