The plastic that I used to machine the ribbon motor out of is called PEEK. I used it for no good reason other than it was laying around the shop. This plastic can be used in continuous operating temperatures approaching 500 degrees Fahrenheit! It makes no difference in this application obviously.

I thought I should send you an update. I have since designed and built a condenser microphone and audio interface and my company will debut at Music Messe in Frankfurt Germany in the summer. I am going to NAMM in California for a soft launch to special interest customers at the end of this month. I owe this inspiration to you. I hope to meet you one day and surely will send you early production models for beta testing if you would like. - Tim@@hoborec

you want those cables from the motor as thick as possible, the resistance of the motor is some mOhms the resistance of thin cables can be comparable which will mean that some energy will be lost in the cables making the mic less sensible and noisy.

Very good video - in the need for a figure eight mic for video (M/S) I found your video. I excluded a ribbon now due to strong magnetic fields (maybe not good for the camera :) - I will try two routes: a small loudspeaker as dynamic mic capsule and a primo figure eight capsule. What I learned for the dynamic mic is that "using a transformer is allowed" and an old 220V -> 9V (9V to loudspeaker) toroid transformer delivered enough voltage for a simple Op Amp based mic amplifier!

You said using brass for the bracket kept breaking. Try annealing the brass by heating it up with a torch first. Heat it, bend it a little, then heat it some more while working it to your desired angle. It keeps the brass from getting work hardened this way, and remains much more flexible.

Hi @hoborec - Firstly thanks for an awesome video! Stunning work. I'm looking to engage in a similar project myself but after seeing your work on this I have a couple of questions which I wonder if you would be kind enough to answer. 1) why do you have 2 wires from the top of your motor - I haven't seen this in any other design I can find but your mic sounds great so I'm curious what the function is. 2) Ive looked at the making of royer motors and they seem to be built on a metal frame - this surely means that the ribbon is not electrically isolated from the magnets so I'm curious why you mention that the copper tape in your design must not touch the magnets? I know you will have tons of people to answer but if you have time Id really appreciate your thoughts. Many thanks! Ben

I have calculated how long your beautiful, delicate ribbon would last in the hands of the vocalist of the thrash metal track in the background .... I think about 0.7 seconds! Your design and construction is excellent. It might be worth mentioning though that ribbons need a lot of gain. My Neumann condenser mic needs 30dB of gain, an SM58 +50dB and my Coles STC 4038 needs +70dB on vocals Sometimes the noise floor of the mixer bus spoils the clarity of the ribbon mic. Also many economy mixers may not have enough gain. I have all 3 hanging in my vocal booth. The ribbon is not always happy. It is VERY sensitive to p's and b's Many thanks for your work. John, Manchester UK

That would be in my hands, and yes you’re probably right that it wouldn’t be that great to scream in to it hehe. The output of this mic is pretty much the same as a SM57. But a lot darker sounding, so if you want more too end there will be more noise for sure.
