In this video I will share with you how I built the motion platform frame and the design decisions I needed to make. The frame is made from 80mm by 40mm aluminium extrusion. The total cost was $802 Australian which included the cutting, brackets, end caps, inserts, bolts and nuts. The rig is 1200m long and 600mm wide. Everything is bolted together using right angle brackets and bolts.

I love how you made the heptic system. I am looking into doing that myself and thank you for sharing. I wasn't able to locate where to buy the servo.

6 DOF! Love your videos. Your videos helped me build my first 3DOF RIG! It's awesome. But I built it from steel and the more stuff I add, the less responsive it becomes. I was thinking about aluminum extrusion for my upper frame because (power to weight..) Do you think I should give it a shot or should I simply "SEND IT" and make it out of carbon fiber. Yeah my seat is 35 pounds so I am ordering a Kirkey (10 pounds). As soon as I added the fanatec v-3 pedals way out front the responsiveness of the rig became and issue. Any advice from you or your Subs? thanks DMAX

I used the smallest steel section I could get away with without it flexing too much. Weight is certainly an issue. I have seen some people use aluminium but then you need greater cross sectional area to maintain stiffness

Awesome video. thanks. isnt it too wide ? i assume it is 68cm wide. I think you have lost a little bit from right to left angle ? am i wrong ?

If I made it narrower, the flight sim pedals wouldn't fit. The cross braces are 600mm. To get a greater angle you could move the actuators closer together but then you have to be aware of over balancing

Hey bro, gr8 looking build, I'm going to follow this exactly, however could u write out the dimensions of the rig, I'm having a hard time following the video with respect to the measurements, thanks

one thing i dont understand is why 80/20 rig builders always put the seat bar inside the rectangle frame instead of putting it on top of the long bars, to create a ledge they can rest on. because, if were resting circa 100kg in the seat plus acceleration, why just rely on those brackets fr strength?

Did you changed from your old 6DOF to this, or do you use both? I came to your channel because of your 6DOF and now i see, that you build an SFX100 Rig. Why? :)
@sixdegreesofflight7765
@sixdegreesofflight7765 3 жыл бұрын
The 6DOF was a great rig but it took up a lot of room and it was hard to get into/out of. The batteries, three pairs of power supplies etc made it quite messy and dusty! Others who also built 6DOF like mine went down the SFX100 route as well. Much more compact and very easy to build. The trade off was smaller movements and less degrees of freedom. However, I found that when I was immersed in VR the experience was about the same or better. YMMV

@@sixdegreesofflight7765 OU hehe. Your answer is waaaaay to late. :) In the meantime i built my 6DOF (just "finished" it). In the style of your old actuators with slight optimizations. But with the motors of the sfx100. I'am so happy with it. Search the xsim forum for "Basti's 6DOL Project -Six Degrees of Love-".

I like this one better because it is more compact and easier to build. It is also easier to get into and out of.

Hi, it would be difficult for me to definitively answer your question. The reason I went with my own design was the flexibility for it to be used for both flight sim and racing sims. So for example, I had the choice of using lighter gauge aluminium extrusion but chose the heavy duty profile because I didn't want it to flex. The key aspect for my approach is flexibility to meet me specific needs. Hope that helps in your own decision.

@@sixdegreesofflight7765 Thanks! Been trying to come up with a rig that can accommodate both scenarios as well. Great video, definitely gave me some ideas.

@@sixdegreesofflight7765 I just watched it thanks. I have a question about your cockpit build. Is the 40x80 base stable enough for a direct drive wheel not flex sideways, forward and backward? I was thinking 40x160 should be a more stable like with the Sim Lab P1 / P1 X cockpits
@sixdegreesofflight7765
@sixdegreesofflight7765 4 жыл бұрын
@@MarkVersion1 Using larger profile extrusions like 40x160 might mean that you only need one gantry to hold the steering wheel. I used heavy duty profile for 40x80. I wanted to avoid using a 'stay' or diagonal. The profile I used does not flex at all even when the 1200mm piece is suspended at each end and I stand with my full weight in the middle. So I think you are entering into the territory of 'diminishing returns'. The way I designed my rig was an overkill. Each gantry is held by eight 40mm brackets and sixteen M8 bolts. These things do not move at all. When tied together by the yolk or steering wheel assemblies it might as well be welded. All the best with your build
@MarkVersion1
@MarkVersion1 4 жыл бұрын
@@sixdegreesofflight7765 yeah I realize that. I saw other videos using very simple gantry structure but they are using belt driven wheels. It saved them money for the build but it wouldn't be enough to handle a DD wheel though. Some of those who have used a DD wheel used 40x160 profile as base. Btw, the reason I brought this up is that I'm planning an aluminum profile build that would be stable for a DD wheel. The problem is that it there's no one selling a 40x160mm aluminum profile in my country. Max is 40x80mm. If I really can't get a 40x160 profile then I'll settle with 40x80 and use your design except for the motion simulator.

@@MarkVersion1 Did you have any issues with the 40x80? My rig is a full frame 3DOF centered on a U Joint. I made it out of welded steel and don't notice flex. But weight seems to be an issue. (either that or I need bigger motors). If I did the Top frame of my rig out of the 40x80 do you think it would hold up? take a look if you get a minute. SixDegreesOfFlight videos are awesome!! DMAX
