Using a custom print t-shirt for patches was genius, especially if you need a large amount of patches for multiple characters, you'd just need one single print shirt for their names and then a large batch for any others you'd need. Hell, you could even find t-shirts with cool logos at thrift stores and just cut those off for a patch.

Love the idea to make the patches. I would note that on current uniforms, patches are Velcro backed. If they were mounted to Velcro, they could be swapped and the backing on the flight suit could be rivetted instead of sewn, that might save some time, if that fits the look you want.

I remember way back in 1980, when myself and a friend made a sci-fi jumpsuit out of a car rain cover (With a LOT of help from his mum, who made her own clothes from other materials) for a drama club school play. So much fun, and I still make props for local drama clubs today, many, MANY years later :-)

gotta love the finish on the graphite, it looks amazing! If you ever need an almost mirror like reflection with it clear coat the black with a high gloss first (even if you used a gloss black to start with) and it will be really chrome! Great job!

Hey man, just wanted to say thanks for all your mentoring! I watched a video of yours the other day in which, when discussing weathering, you said something like “you can’t be afraid to mess up something cool for the chance to make something cooler”. I applied that to an animation I was working on, to great success. I’m now applying that emotionally since my girlfriend and I broke up yesterday. Just wanted to say thanks! And lots of love.

about gettingg shirts printed as patches, i've read before that getting jute bags as the print material would be betterr in regards that they aren't as stretchy as shirt materials.

I think you should machine sew the "standard" patches then hand sew or glue the name badge. The guy would have been issued the jumpsuit with patches then had to put on his own name tag.

Do you clearcoat over graphite coated props/features? It would effect the finish, but I'd worry about it rubbing off on hands/clothes. On a similar note, I have some ideas involving pigment powders (made from pastel chalks) used in similar ways to the fuller's earth, so I wonder if they would need to be sealed on in some way at the end of the process, or if it would be a nonissue. Thanks for running the channel, it's great!

Do you use any sort of sealer with that graphite powder, or is it pretty inert after being buffed in? I'm just thinking of my drawing attempts, how my fingers pick up and smudge pencil graphite.

NOTE: If you go with the space/naval comparison, those are Lieutenant's bars, not Captain's (Captain has 4 sleeve/shoulder bars, Star Trek:TOS always got it wrong, too, giving captains Lt. Cmdr sleeve bars). www.defense.gov/Resources/Insignia/
