I made a giant bison head out of chicken wire and paper mache (among other things) for my new apartments and it is officially the most ridiculous art project I've ever done. Here's how I did it. (His name is Winston.)
Fun game: count how many times my cat appears in the video.

This is a great tutorial! I love the humor too. One question: how necessary is the interference of the cat to the final outcome? Because I will have to borrow one, if needed. lol

Thanks for the tutorial! I guess it gonna help me a lot in my project. There's a question from me. Do you have any idea on how to make the product formed more stable? Cause I'll be doing a giant decorative monkey which have be in a stand position.

+JingHui Tai Thanks for watching, I'm glad it will be helpful for your project! The bison head I ended up with is pretty sturdy, but to make it more stable I would try maybe reinforcing the chicken wire frame with more wire interwoven or pick out a heavier gauged chicken wire to begin with. This will end up making the final sculpture heavier, though. If you have any other questions just let me know!

The head could have been done with two empty gallons of milk and to save money you can use a mixture of flour and water cook in low temp that's what I use for my crafts and it dries perfect and hard

So helpful thank you! Love the cat appearance too 😊 I'm making masks that size to be wearable for actors in a play. Any tips on how to have a human head sit comfortably and securely inside that and see out?
@alisonschwebach
@alisonschwebach 5 жыл бұрын
Martha Skelly sounds fun! I’m not sure if the chicken wire would be very comfortable for a wearable mask, but you may want to line the inside with felt for fabric so it won’t scratch the people wearing it! Also using foam around where it would sit on the crown of the head would make it more comfortable to wear

any advice on making a simple wireframe model and have the paper translucent? ive made a small microcontroller with rgb led that i want to use as a nightlight for my son, and i want to put it inside a paper mache dinosaur.. i dont want to use chicken wire though, i only want lines on the vertices to create a blocky look, so some sort of copper wire is what ill have to use. as for the paper, i have no idea...

I'd recommend trying out tissue paper that you can find in the gift wrapping section at most stores, I think when the glue is applied should become somewhat translucent (although complete transparency might be difficult to achieve). The biggest problem is that any paper that is thin enough to be translucent will be a bit tricky to work with and will be more prone to tearing so you'll just have to have some extra patience with it. I hope that helps, good luck on the night light it sounds like it'll be really cool!

Hi, where did you buy the chicken wire from? What is in the paper mache paste?

Hiya, love this Buffalo! Nice work. Does the newspaper paper mache cling to the chicken wire? Is the glue mixture really enough? I'm making a giant half Moon and worry it's not going to stick.

Sorry for such a late response! The paper mache did cling to the chicken wire, but it took some patience. If I were to do it again I would definitely wrap more of the chicken wire with the masking tape to give the wet paper mache something to stick to easier. And the glue mixture held up pretty well for me. Hope that helps, best of luck on your project!

Alison Schwebach what I wound up doing was first using tissue paper full sheets. These dipped into the chicken wire form and the newspaper strips clung easily to that. I appreciate the response! Life is busy for creators! Take care.

How heavy is it? Would it make a good helmet?
@alisonschwebach
@alisonschwebach 7 жыл бұрын
It's not too heavy, I was able to hang it with some command hooks. But I don't think it would make a very good helmet, the chicken wire probably wouldn't be too comfy
