Can you put batting inside?

Yes, you could, however, you'll need to either quilt it or tie to keep the batting in place.

Jan, I am relatively new to sewing (late in life ;) this is hands down the best instructional video I’ve ever watched (and I’ve watched a lot of them!). Thank you for taking the time to show and demonstrate every single step…for us newbies it is SO helpful. I’m a “visual” learner and showing each step in this video was a game changer. I do a topstitch from corner to corner, same as a top stitched around the edge. This holds the two sides together better after going through laundry.

I hadn't sewn anything in well over 20 years and when my daughter had our first grandchild, I was terrified by the proposition of making a baby quilt on a new machine. It took me months to actually start one, even after I collected yards and yards of adorable fabric. After watching dozens of videos, I was nearly in tears when I finally began, but constructed the entire quilt step-by-step with your help in this video, rewinding again and again to make sure I did it right. Well, it turned out way better than okay, and I'm looking forward to lots of other sewing projects. You're the best, Jan--thank you for your reassuring videos! 💖

@@JanHowell This was most helpful. Thanks! May I just bring up a pet peeve of mine? It's a selvage, NOT a "salvaged edge." It's derived from "self edge": the edge that was original to the woven cloth, as opposed to the edge that somebody cut from the length.

I always use a chop stick to push out any corners. It works great and not too pointed so it doesn’t poke thru.

Many years ago I was taught to tale a coner and the the diagonal cocner and pull. It straighteded the fabric every time. That was back in the 60s and I still do ir that way.

But if you look closely at the polkadots her fabric is not square Another reason to stay away from polkadots or anything with a lot of lines unless you know how to tug at the fabric to straighten those grain lines

Ok so I said I would make one because I had to make another baby gift for another new mom in our church. I made this one. It was so easy to do. The hardest part is the cutting and making sure it's square, I don't have all your fancy tools. Just a pair of scissors and a square for dry wall (hey it works) It turned out so well and was so easy to put together. Your instructions are great!! Thanks again

My sister has made 100's of the self binding blankets but she keeps the corners she cuts off and uses them to make half square triangle blocks and creates ANOTHER quilt !!!!

Great tutorial! I just found you and love the blanket. You made me nervous leaving your rotary cutter open while you were smoothing and rearranging the fabric. I've had a bad cut from one, so I close it every time I lay it down. Thanks for sharing this blanket with us!

Hi Jan, you are precious in all you share within your sewing videos. I am a youngish sewer of 73. I do work in a well known fabric store here in Oregon. My Mom was a Tailor .. her specialty / altering men’s suits.) She stopped teaching me cuz I didn’t like taking things out, which to her was a huge mistake, saying to me, “.. if you don’t learn to take things out you’ll never make a seamstress. Oi Vey! After I had kiddos at nearly 40 yrs old I returnedTo sewing off and on for years. Actually altered my daughters wedding dress, made costumes, etc, etc.Lots of intermittent sewing. 5 years ago I returned yet again with the birth of first grand baby girl. I’ve done a lot alterations for friends & family over the years too. Tryin these days to remember things I had already learned.! Now, after 14 yrs of marriage she & Hubby are bringing our first grandson. I must say I’ve spent a great deal time relearning so much. All of this to say that I get a little turned around with sewing at times. When this happens I always come back to YOUR TEACHINGS THAT CONTAIN SO MUCH CLARITY! I'm a newbie and this was just dumbfounding to me until you got to the end of joining the last bit before you turned it inside out! WOW! Uh o--now ya done it. Pink polka dots really drew me in the first place and I'm so glad I watched the entire production. It turned out so fine! So brilliant. Can't wait to try this. May make a mug rug first just to get the hang of the idea. Thank you so so much. I wanted to make a suggestion for everyone who may not have considered this source of fabric. GOODWILL!! Their sheets and bedding sections have TONS of fabric to hoard/er-collect. :)

Great easy to follow tutorial! The safety pin tip is excellent to keep the straight and cross grains in the right place. I've made a lot of these for my guild, and have witnessed that they frequently distort when washed. I now sew an "X" from corner to corner to hold the layers together. BTW, I'm watching this in 2024. Thank you!

Viewers, PLEASE do not leave your rotary cutter open in between cuts as is shown here. Always CLOSE it because it is much too easy to slice yourself by wrongly grabbing the sharp end (especially if the cutter gets covered with fabric like it did in this video), drop it blade down on your foot (ask me how I know this) or otherwise thinking it's closed up when it isn't

Jan I would ALWAYS pre-wash flannel... they all are woven so differently and they definitely shrink at different degrees... Also, Young mothers will want that chemical sizing washed out before they can use the blankets. I have two granddaughters and another on the way and I have made loads of these blankets...I always pre-wash and you fresh Press on them and they look beautiful....

Same here, preshrinking eliminates distortion of any project over its lifetime. Any experienced seamstress would agree.

WOW. Im new to sewing (at 57 years old), and ive got to say this is THE BEST video ive seen so far. You have so much patience and I love how you demonstrate absolutely everything. Even cutting the fabric (which is still confusing to me) and pressing. So so happy I found you. Im off to have a look at the rest of your you tube videos. I foresee a day in front of the computer instead of the office where I should be today!!!! New subscriber here. Actually could you please tell me if these can be done with Fleece? I have some of that, but no Flannelette. Thanks so much x

I just made this in a rectangle. Still made sharp mitered corners. The small piece was 26 X 32 1/4 and the large piece was 32 X 38 1/4. This pattern is a win Thanks for the suggestion to keep grain same direction top and bottom.

I’ve made many with a nice soft cotton, and I’ve also used minky as well for the backing. They all worked out so nicely.

That is super cute ... I’ve been sewing for 40 years, self taught, and I never knew about matching the selvage edges ... you CAN teach an old dog new tricks 😉 I do mostly quilting nowadays ... I love that “J” tag ... mind if I ask where you get those? I’d like a simple way to mark my quilts like that

@@hippiechicksmomma8691 i've been sewing for about 50 years (i'm 64 :) and at first it was like, what did she do? i believe if you watch it each step, and do each step as she does it, take your time, watch each step more than once if needed, you'll be able to do it :) . if you have any old sheets or whatever, practice with those. i would definitely advise investing in a cutting mat, ruler and rotary cutter. it makes cutting straight lines so much easier, quicker, and more precise.

Has anyone done this for a rectangle shape instead of a square? It seems like you just add the 5 inches to the size of the smaller piece, no matter the shape? The first one I tried this on, was a silk and a Minky. Two very hard pieces to match! Didn't come out perfect, but we worked it out. Not the best, but its so comfy anyway.

I made this blanket again, and this time it turned out much better. I made it in a very soft flannel, and although a little harder to work with, was fun to make. I expect it will shrink some, but that is ok, as the baby is still very small. This will be a good stroller blanket or for tummy time. Again, thanks for the instructions. They helped a lot.

Thanks for your easy to follow instructions. Wondering why does it matter to sew from the center to the 1/4 edge in both directions and not just all the way in one direction? I've made many of these darling blankets. Your ironing tips will make mine so much better. Thanks!

I do the same that she does, start from the middle outwards b/c by the time you get to the edge, it stretches a bit, so much better to do half the length each time.

Be careful to close your rotary cutter when you're finished with it. Wouldn't want you to accidentally get cut!

I noticed it too and every time her hand got close to the blade when smoothing out the fabric I winced thinking she was going to cut herself.

If you just follow step by step without trying to figure why you’ll be fine. However, I understand why it would seem confusing if you haven’t made a quilt with a binding.

OMG i am so embarrassed because so many people are saying how great the tutorial is, and here i am in the corner nearly in tears of frustration. I guess some learn differently than others. She seemed to be shuffling so much; i was getting so nervous! By 18:52 i was toast. By that time either i fell into a 60 second coma, or something was skipped, and i couldnt figure out where she had jumped to/from. Maybe I'll give it another try some other time.

Great video....I did learn some tips on this....I disagree on you not washing the material before or after....I use a lingerie bag & a gentle cycle & the material is just fine....

I prefer to wash the fabric first for these as well unless it’s a very expensive flannel but they usually do shrink.

Thank you so much Jan for the excellent tutorial. I have made several using your dimensiona. However, If you have a rectangle quilt top (43"x49") can this still work if you keep the "overage" of the back fabric the same width all the way around? So in my case, use 53" x 59" as the back fabric?
