+SoCraftastic So I know this video was a while ago, but I just did this craft! I actually didn't have any alcohol, so I tried to think of things like it... I tried a few things, but I found one that works pretty well! I used nail polish remover! It doesn't work quite as well with the "mock-crayon melting" but it works great for everything else!

I LOVE this Diy its an easy and cheaper way of making really nice art and you don't have to spend money on specific water colors. tbh make more of these diy's that use household items!!!!!!!

I forgot to say that I did this at a July 4th party 3 years ago and I provided white T-shirts. Everyone was wowed because it is so much fun watching the pretty colors bleed. Thanks for sharing the canvas idea.

This is cool! In my class for a mother's day gift, we used tiles and alcohol in a spray bottle, we would fill in a portion of the tile with sharpie and finish it. Then spray the tile with the spray bottle for it to spread.

Another great way to use the alcohol is to put it in a spray bottle, that's what I do. You can get some beautiful and cool designs! It'd be really good for a galaxy design :) I think the last one is favorite! They're all awesome tho

We have been using it on artist canvas. Works real nicely...haven't tried the alcohol on paper though.

I think I'm also going to try it with diluted white vinegar. I think the acid might do neat things to the ink. Lemon juice as well.

You could use water soluble markers or water colours and water. When it is dry lay it down flat on a table and spray it multiple times with hair spray in thin (!) layers to protect it.

My favorite is the galaxy one. However, I would keep the stars on rather than peeling them off. Wow, I can't wait to get some canvas and some rubbing alcohol; I already have the Sharpies here, and I can spend a good Saturday night in front of my TV set doing a really pretty picture

+Flutter Shy MLP You can, but it's better if it is a smooth cardstock. For markers I use Neenah Index cardstock and Strathmore Bristol or marker paper from any art/craft store like Hobby Lobby, Dick Blick, Michaels, AC Moore, etc. Hope that helps!

+Sofia Raquel Gutierrez Gonzalez as an artist i have worked with many mediums. working with sharpies they are alcohol based markers. like water color paint except water colors use water. you wouldn't use water with and alcohol based medium and you wouldn't use alcohol with water colors so if you use different markers make sure you know what their base is and then use that.

oil will react differently than rubbing alcohol. try it and see what happens.

My only question is why do this instead of just buying some warercolors? A crayons set of 24 costs $5 and less colors cost even less. There are also no nasty fumes. But seriously are there any benefits?

Just watercolors alone would probably not produce the exact same effect (unless you're a pro). You can use the alcohol resist method with actual watercolor paintings, though. The Google images for "watercolor with alcohol" look pretty cool! Honestly, whether or not there are benefits to one over the other is based on personal preference. Some people prefer using pencils, pens, & markers instead of paint. Also, Sharpies tend to appear to be more bold & pigmented and produce a different texture than paint. I admit I don't like the smell of Sharpies (or rubbing alcohol), but using them in a well-ventilated area will help. Overall, this method is just fun & exciting (for me)!

Nuna fish you don't have to use sharpie that's just and brand. Dollar store markers work just as good also Bic mark it is far less expensive as well.

fun stuff! I have been using the 91% alcohol trick since I accidentally "painted" a super realistic looking bolder when I tried to correct a stray mark I made when I dropped my marker on the piece I was working on sometime in 2010 or 11. So much fun, and so easy to get fantastic results. I used the technique for my profile "self-portrait."

Hey there just a safety worry here, is it safe to use that plastic thing too get the alcohol and drip it onto the sharpie ink? Won't the alcohol dissolve the plastic? I'm starting this project soon and just wanna take some precautions... Love the video by the way!

No, it actually doesn't. People use them for acids and such (I used it in science class) and even under the pressure of a strong acids or based it won't melt so it shouldn't melt in this.

Peter Shonoda It might be that they are manufactured in a different country, and the have no inexpensive options for transporting them elsewhere. Try buying them in large quantities online. Even with shipping costs, you might end up spending less per pen that way.

sam gregory Bic Mark It permanent markers work too. They're cheaper (if I could find my receipt I'd tell you what I spent, well, Alaska price anyway) and work just the same. I bought an assortment of 24 at Walmart. I haven't tried this with Sharpie brand permanent marker, so I don't know if they work better than Bic. I think it just needs to be permanent marker.

The alcohol might wet down the paper but if you wanna do it maybe you can stack some papers together and glue and add only the amount of alcohol that won't go through the paper :)

No it will not work on paper the rubbing alcohol is a liquid so it will go through that paper and the paper will get wet and rip

I tried sticking paper on cardboard with a chevron pattern on and i drew it out and sprayed hairspray and the chevron shows through and it looks so cool!

I can confirm that this works.I used shades of blue and purple, and it created something that looks like you would have to buy at some furniture stores for 60 dollars.it is absolutely beautiful

Who knew?!! I have lots of old sharpies that still work from years ago and I just recently started creating mixed media art...this is a great alternative to buying all those expensive distress inks from the craft stores.

I think a lot of these would look better if you had a small spray bottle on hand. It would help the galaxy look more galaxy-ish, and it would help the tie dye spread out more. The good thing about a spray bottle, is that you can spray from a distance, and lightly coat the canvas without disturbing the sharpie much, and let the alcohol do it's thing, or you can spray up close, to push the sharpie out in a circular motion. I think it'd be fun to try :D

these were great! and the last one where you layered the alcohol drops will actually be very helpful for me in crating air bubbles in my future mermaid paintings!!!
