I’m with you on sanding the inserts, I would know that it wasn’t smooth and I would lose sleep over it. Quality work makes you feel better.

There's something to be said for "if nobody's gonna ever see it, why bother?" but there's also something to be said for "take pride in what you do." I honestly can go either way depending on how I'm feeling that day. haha

Thanks very much! If I had to do it over I'd use a bit thinner material where the knives go so they don't have quite as much breathing room, but I was happy with how it came out.

Very very nice. Beautiful construction and choice of wood. One thing, though: If you use more than one knife you'll have to remember where they go since there's no indication on the outside. I would also add a base to keep from tipping it.
@WoodenThingsAndStuff
@WoodenThingsAndStuff Жыл бұрын
It's not tipping. And because the slots are shaped to each knife, you're really only remembering the two that are close to the same width. And I did them biggest-to-smallest from the bottom up, I think, so it should be pretty easy to remember. Probably only get it wrong a couple times before it's natural. Thanks for watching!

Mike, this project turned out great. I really like this Peruvian Walnut it is beautifully grained and good call with the white oak contrasting wood. It all looks great, I hope you saved the scraps for pen blanks or something else . Good job.

I've got a few bits left. It's super annoying to work, though. I can see why rich people use it for decks...it's got a built in oil content that probably makes it waterproof even without finish.

I saw a great tip for helping with the “spooging “😳 problem. A segmented turner adds a bit of salt to the glue. Seems to really keep the pieces from sliding. I personally haven’t tried it yet.

Nice work. Thinking of using it with some modifications for scissors and maybe even a matching side piece with 6 steak knives. You mention width of 6 inches and length of 54 and also removing 1/2 inch to form a wedge but you never mention the thickness of the board. Can you share please? Thanks

Wicked piece man love the layout. The slots looked quite wide compared to the knife blades, was there any slip there or did they fit in tight?

There was a littlle wiggle, but it's not for transport, dude. Having said that, you're absolutely right. In an ideal world I'd have taken 1/16" (that's probably like 2mm for you) off those oak pieces with a drum sander.
