My brother wanted a low sliding / rolling gate to stop the pet puppies getting up the side passage, but this design would work great on a deck or veranda too. Merbau decking is a great outdoor material and tough enough to withstand animal attention which lent itself well to this application. I used Kreg pocket hole joinery which allowed me to hide most of the hardware and using a guide box and rollers allowed for the gate to open all the way.
Trying something new and giving you a break from my over-complicated explanations this time, sit back and enjoy this easy, chilled out build you can knock out in a weekend.

Love the design and love the puppers. I laughed at the 6.06 mark though. That’s why I avoid Phillips head screws. Robertson screws are my choice. 👍🏻 Personally I prefer commentary in vids, however this one was so straightforward it didn’t really require any.

Thanks Rhys, the boys are naughty little buggers, but they are cute as. This was actually my first 'non-talky' build as I was trying something new to keep the time down and for exactly the reason you said that it's an easy one to follow along. Apart from Kreg screws Robertson are hard to come by in the big box here, I might have to look online when my current Phillips supply runs low 😊

Thanks Dirk. I will learn "real" joinery as I progress, but this is a practical project and only needs a practical solution. The only thing I think I'll need to keep an eye on is the Kreg screws as they are not galvanised and may get a little wet. I'm hoping as they are buried and oiled I think they'll be fine for a number of years. My goal for my 2nd YT year is to mix up my presentations a bit with the odd "Quick" video and "silent builds" like this to break up the chatter ;)

Very nice job Have you ever looked into the one that has an angle on the slide or a weight or a spring where the door is always under tension and automatically closes I only mention that because I have many dogs and losing a dog is a complete nightmare or keeping certain dogs separated from each other is also somewhat difficult
@FixitFingers
@FixitFingers 3 жыл бұрын
Hey! This was my first gate build but geez that's a good little idea. It would be tricky on this particular design as the gate is so heavy (and the ground uneven) that the amount of counterweight force needed would be high. I think you'd need a good track on the bottom to run smoother and perhaps use pine or aluminium.

Hi there, thank you for uploading such an informative video. I have a question I am trying to get a gate built using decking board wood and they guy came back and said he cannot do it, it is too heavy - what do you think of that and is there a way putting wheels for sliding. Please help!
@FixitFingers
@FixitFingers 2 жыл бұрын
G'day Shaun, sliding gates are not as common as hinged gates, and yep, hardwood decking is quite heavy over this span, but a wheeled design like mine here should overcome that. It's worked well, only issue is stones and sticks on the wheels path can foul it. You could add a track, or just keep it clean ;) The gate is a bit heavy to slide compared to hinged gate, but doesn't take that much effort.

@FixitFingers
@FixitFingers Жыл бұрын
G'day g'day. I'd say at around 10-15cm (4 to 6") it'd would work fine. I purposely made mine larger to act as a pot plant stand and give it a give more strength.

Did you line the guide box with felt or anything to protect the gate finish? Would that even work? Thanks.
@FixitFingers
@FixitFingers 3 ай бұрын
G'day Paul, no, that was a decking oil I used and would recommend. It soaks into the wood so it wont rub off inside the guide box. I'd avoid using a film finish like polyurethane for this reason.

@FixitFingers 3 жыл бұрын
Merbau comes from SE Asia and we grow a bit here in Australia too. It is common and cheap here but probably rare in the States and more expensive. It's not that great a material (hard and brittle) but makes great decking. Any decking boards you can get your hands on should be fine for this design.

That gate is about 1.1m (3.5 feet) wide. That design could probably be adapted to go wider, you're just going to need an extra vertical brace at the back and an extra wheel . It's pretty heavy though in hardwood, a 2m / 6ft gate would be getting close to the limit I think.
