This is how I built a 200 watt Solar Trailer for my electric bike. This video was filmed over the course of a few months, and took many version to get to the one you see in the thumbnail. This trailer gives me unlimited range as long as the sun is out. I love my solar bike trailer.

how wild would it be to attempt an e-bike on solar across america lol. Would take a lot of planning because you're going to want to plan the best route and best weather conditions ultimately for when you should start and end. I would assume the downside to this is you'd probably want to stay near freeways/cities of course you could always deviate and go off and check out key spots along the way. That would be one helluva weekly vlog and at the end I'd recut it into a documentary in shorter form. Imagine all the trials and tribulations, the people you meet along the way, your camp sites, what you have to do when something goes wrong with the bike/solar panel etc Probably would need to plan your day out like ride 20+ miles take a break, eat, use the bathroom, ride another 20+ miles rinse repeat depending on weather to you might have to just go BUSSIN like 3hr ride to beat a storm system etc. Would be fascinating to me anyway. Of course a tremendous amount of time and effort.

Lol .. im doing a cross country bike tour... I started out with a gravel bike with panniers... and a dog carrier for my chihuahua... I started in Mobile alabama... im currently in Bellingham Washington... I JUST upgraded my bike... I installed a 1000 watt bafang bbshd mid-drive motor.. with a 48 volt 20ah battery... loaded it down... and realized... " crap im over my frames weight limit... serious frame flex... i could hear my spokes buckling as i rode my 5 mile test run... also ate 22% of my battery... ugh.. fk me right... im need atleast 50 miles of range in the mountains... so... bought a burley coho xc... but i know thats going to drop my range even more... so.. i decided to add another 20ah battery... and a 200 watt solar panel...😂 i swear this guy is a fckn psychic and made this video SPECIFICALLYFOR ME😂 as of now im waiting for the axel... and since im not a trustafarian or a yuppie... im going to have to make do in the area for a minute with where im at now... but... as soon as i can pick up some more construction work to fund the 2nd battery and solar panel... ill be building basically THIS exact setup... except that im on a 22 salsa journeyer advent build... not that there is much left of the original bike... when I started this tour... I hadn't touched a bicycle in 25 years.. didn't know squat... I just researched the best starter bike in price range range.. bought it... bought panniers.. and have steadily upgraded everywhere I pick up work as I figure out what works and what doesnt...😂

👍Hi Eric, I do a bit the same here, already did about 10.000 Km of solartouring with different setups, was thinking about this Burley trailer for my 2024 Tour (my old Topeak trailer got broken in 2023). I am now building my own trailer from scratch (with 30x30 and 40x40 Alu profiles). I use a 200W 39V panel (max 1,5 Kw per cycling day) that can tilt to the sun. You can watch my videos on my channel for further details).

Nice rig! The rubber feet didn't hold up on the Burley. The tire on the Burley is also no good. I got 9 flats from road wire. I do want this one to tilt one way when parked, but given I ride with traffic over 20mph the panel other then flat would crash me. Outside Phoenix to get anywhere highway riding becomes hard to avoid. Total daily power would been a great number for me to have, but I never put battery back up on my meter so it reset every time I was shaded.

cool contraption, thanks for showing us. that one wheel trailer also looks very good. a bit like the aevon trailer except it has a different hinge placement. how many watthours can you extract on an average day of riding? there's a solar bicycle tour between france and morocco, they extract over 4000 watthours a day and only limited by rules on solar panel size and battery weight. a couple guys go really fast there and on some hilly terrain, too. there's an interview with the winner and he rides 270 km a day, descends 65 km/h in the mountain on a heavy bike, and only uses 200 watts out of the motor on 12% steep climb. his advice is to ride slower.
@Eric_Tennant
@Eric_Tennant 9 ай бұрын
Yep less then 15 mph increases range massively. I need to get a backup battery for the meter as I've never got a whole days data from it; because shadows reset it.

Why not rigid solar panel though? It has it's own frame and will last longer too.
@Eric_Tennant
@Eric_Tennant 3 ай бұрын
Lighter weight, More crash resistant, and needed custom mount points to adapt to the trailer. That said it can be done with rigid dropping the solar cost by 1/3. Some 2020 railing would still be needed to adapt it to the trailer.
@Slackware1995
@Slackware1995 16 күн бұрын
You should have used a rigid panel. 1. No need to build the platform 2. Price per Watt is much cheaper 3. Rigid is significantly more effecient than flexible. Smaller panel for equal Watt 4. Optionally upgrade to bifacial. About the same price as flexible but up to 15% extra Watts 5. If you mount the panel a few inches (or several if using bifacial) which will improve cooling. Eco-worthy's 48v solar charger is about $50 (prime day sale @ $33). Can be configured to charge 24v, 36v, 48v, 60v, 72v batteries. It uses solar power to operate so never drains the batteries. I just installed one and hooked up the battery first and went crazy as it wouldn't turn on. I was ready to return it when I read the manual to find it requires solar to operate (unlike almost every other solar charger that requires connecting to the batteries prior to connecting PV).
@Eric_Tennant
@Eric_Tennant 15 күн бұрын
1. With glass you still need to frame to the trailer. 2. True 3. False. I have pulled over 100% off these. 4. Bifacial is something I want to test. 5. This design cools great by allowing the air to flow under it. a. Glass weight is more b. Glass isn't going to take a crash well. I have never tested the Eco-Worthy's MPPT ( amzn.to/4fg4g9A ) so I have no Idea on its performance. This model isn't waterproof. That all said I may try a rigid top if I was sent a good bifacial panel. Inner farming wouldn't be that hard to do.
@Slackware1995
@Slackware1995 15 күн бұрын
@@Eric_Tennant 3. By efficient I mean Watts per square inch (or square cm). 4. I just purchased 7 BougeRV 200w 24v N-type 16BB bifacial panels for my 5th wheel. I won't be able to mount them for maximumbifacial, but they will get a few percent extra. These are high efficient panels. 50.7 inches by 30.2 inched = 1531.14 sq in or .131 Watt per sq inland not including 5-15% extra from bifacial. I also got 10 Eco-worthy 130w flexible panels. 38.7 inches by 27.1 inched = 1048.77 sq in or .124 Watt per square inch. Many people report actual wattage between 80-100. That is. 0.076 to 0.095 Watt per square inch. I bought these for areas that I may need to walk and/or where the roof is curved. I also have 10 Renogy 100w panels. 41.8 inches by 20.9 inches = 873.62 square inched or 0.114 Watt per sq inch. I know these get 90+ Watt per panel. Yes I will have 3 strings of panels connected to 2 eg4 6000xp invertors (2 mppt solar chargers each). The bifacials will be installed were they can get some extra power, the flexible panels I already described and the Renogy 100w panels that I previously bought for a different project that fell through. I paid a premium for the bifacial panels because every Watt of charging will matter. I could be running two AC units or electric heaters, a combo washer/dryer and more. The 7 bifacials should Max at 1400-1470 Watts. The Renogy should Max at about 900 Watts and hopefully the 10 flexible "130 Watt" panels at max around 1000 Watts for a max potential of around 3300-3370 Watts. I'll hopefully exceed 85% charging so 2805 to 2865 Watts to the batteries. Almost enough to run both AC units. Once I have everything installed I will see if I can squeeze in a few more panels. I may also get another portable (folding) panel to supplement the "150w" (really closer to 100w) panel. The portable panel is connected to my 48v battery bank via the eco-worthy boost charger.

Interesting idea. What's your total battery ah? And voltage of the bike's Motor/Battery system? I gotten mine similar but instead of slapping a huge panel. Mine would be more portable carry down that fits into the trailer hide away and then thrown out when needed. Though more focus on 12volts onto a portable solar battery that'll then run to 110volt AC and recharge fast from the wall chargers. Or i could easily stop at a place and be recharged of everything within 4hours. My motor and battery setup right now is 36volts across the 500watt and rear stock 250watt (Though will be changing it to a 500watt mid-drive 36volt later.). Running the stock 7.8ah internal cell in the back and a whopping 30ah cell in the trailer. I already get a pretty good distance off my 30ah cell on 500watt front hub. if anything 100miles. So 2 extra 30ah and 12ah + 7.8ah I could go more if i switch to mid-drive power instead. 400 on single charge. Then use a multiplug to connect wall outlet charger bricks to it and then directly to a single outlet where ever i need to. Or do slow charge via solar from portable fold out panels from a portable solar generator.

This is about 10 pounds less than rigid. The custom frame allows for it to be mounted to the trailer, and I'm not sure if the glass on rigid could handle a crash like this unit does. On the flip side a rigid panel is cheaper, and would last longer if the glass didn't crack. Would have to add more framing to it for mounting.

If Eric does a project and doesn't monetize it by selling it, it's fine and that's because it is a hobby. He gains knowledge by attempting to make a specific idea become a reality. In his case, KZfaq does reward him modestly for his efforts producing the video, unlike the rest of us KZfaq viewers trying the same thing. I paid for 3 solar generators, grabbed a couple of solar panels, and bought some items that I never will use or need. Do I really need my USB charger that I attached to my handlebars for my EBike? No, but I am one of the few people able to do it. I learned about different electrical plugs and it gave me increased confidence handling a new task. I had never heard of a Dean's Plug or a Tamiya Plug, but researched and learned that it's plug and play adding an USB charger.
