Today we are going to make a solid wood pine bed from 2x12s and some recycled IKEA bed hardware. I used a bunch of tools in this build, but you could make a variation with just a drill/driver, circular saw, and a sander.

I design my bed with comfort and practicality in mind. Key features, mattress slightly bigger than the frame to minimise accidents and the base or the foot of the bed slightly inside the frame where your toes are safe from touching it.
@MillerJustinFS

Yeah, if you're building the whole bed from scratch why not spend a little extra effort to save your toes and shins/knees.

That’s fair that you mentioned the plank shrinked outside. Wood is very sensitive to moisture and it twists, bends and shrink if not dry.

The headboard will likely self-destruct as the wood moves, or at least crack depending on how dry your wood was. Check out how to make real bread board ends. A channel called 3rd coast craftsman has an ideal example but you don't have to take it that far. It wouldn't take much to change your design to better accommodate movement. Maybe just gluing the center?
@NATHANBUILDS

Yes I've learned a lot as I've built some of these. This headboard is definitely not ideal, but surprisingly so far it has held up fine, it has contacted a little more but nothing else. I'll be curious to see how it holds up. Thanks for the feedback!

Looks very nice. Probably involved much more work than you really had to put into it. Best to shop around and pick the nicest looking cuts of knotless cedar at your local home improvement store. Except for the Ikea slats, their hardware wasn't needed, and good quality studs could have been used for internal supports.

Nathan Builds awsome!! Show the work, iam a carpenter myself, iam puttting my machines together etc, I have a lot of tools, but it feels like I need more 👍🏼, I did my brothers windows decorations from African mahogany , the down side of it is that you have to use all the wood from the same tree in order to have the same color, that was close to impossible, however it turned out pretty good, his pockets were hurting but now house looks beautiful. Keep up the good work brother.

@NATHANBUILDS

Yeah there are definitely a couple things in here where it is required to have more than that. Im going to add a project like that to my list of to dos. I often use more tools since they save time--something I don't have much of--but many times you can make some small changes in design to account for fewer tools. Of course working like that isn't for everyone. Anyway - thanks for the feedback! Also, I think Modern Builds channel and Homemade Modern have done some projects like that.

Total cost was about $32 for wood and $30-35 for screws/finish/other incidentals. Obviously there is an additional cost if you don't have any of the tools. Hope this helps.

I'm sure you could make this with a hand saw and sander, assuming your wood is already milled and square. It's going to be a lot more work and I doubt it will come out as clean, unless you have lots of experience in hand tools.

I used a rabbet router bit that uses a little roller to keep it flush against the workpiece.

I appreciate the video! Why did you attach the last cross board on the bottom with 20 pocket hole screws instead of glue and dowels? Didn’t want to wait for it to dry?
@NATHANBUILDS
@NATHANBUILDS 5 жыл бұрын
Hey John, thanks for watching! I think you are referring to the last piece at the bottom of the headboard. I didn't use dowels because they would have shown on the outside of the legs and I wanted a cleaner look. The pocket holes are a bit of a band aid, but you at least can't see them.

Hey, I reused those from an Ikea bed I had. You could just cut the slats and use any fabric for the strips that are holding them together. Probably staple them in.

Awesome work bro. I am impressed, quick question-how much it would cost to buy all tools that you are using in this video.
@NATHANBUILDS
@NATHANBUILDS 4 жыл бұрын
Hey thanks! For the way I built this bed you need a table saw, router, drill/driver, circular saw, sander (the planer is definitely optional). Obviously the price varies dramatically, but you could get a decent set of these tools for $700ish--less actually because I upgraded my table saw since this video. POWER TOOLS - Table Saw - DEWALT DWE7491RS: amzn.to/3bn4UQi - Drill/Driver Only - Porter-Cable PCCK604L2: amzn.to/2WitsFN - Circular Saw (corded) - SKIL 5280-01: amzn.to/3fzl9x4 - Router - Bosch PR20EVS: amzn.to/3fyw5uM - Orbital Sander - Dewalt DWE6423K: amzn.to/2xP9Ob3

I'm here because I broke my bed. The wood seems to get drier and the boards weaker as years pass by. I already fixed it once, put metal clamps in it, glued it, refinished it, etc. Now it's broken in it's length. I attached 2 more legs, so at least I could sleep somewhere. We only have very expensive and bad quality beds in supermarkets. Most carpenters are old and they charge in the extremes. I already have the board and waching videos on how to make perfect.
