Even with all the keyboards I've built in the past, none of them met all my criteria for a daily driver, so I built this ortholinear split keyboard with a bunch of extra keys to have all the functions. I also finally billet machined my first keyboard frame on the RatRig KillerBee which was quite a challenge.

I'd think the wider they are with extra keys the more awkward it would be to use with tenting

Learned a lot! Instant like! For the life of me though I keep ending up with two left sides T_T , I keep reading the documentation but just cant get it right! Any pointers?

On my board the two sides are totally independent keyboards, so I just flashed them with a different keymap and the same firmware settings otherwise. They don't connect to each other but both to my computer.

Hi David. I really appreciate your keyboard build videos. Thank you. My question is how do you deal with caps lock on a split keyboard? I am halfway through my split keyboard design build. I have the left hand PCB completed. From both a hardware and QMK firmware standpoint I am struggling with solutions for the caps lock function. I would like the light on both left and right hand split keyboard to come on when the caps lock key is toggled on. My build is wired only with USB-C shape ports. Obviously there must be communication between the two split keyboards for this to happen. Any ideas? Have you already thought of solutions for this? Thank you so much!

I'm not using a caps lock light on my keyboard and the functionality of caps lock itself is handled by the OS and not the keyboard so it doesn't matter which keyboard turns it on or off. Maybe there is a way in QMK to querry the OS if caps lock is active, not sure though.

@@DarkArtGuitarsThanks for your input. I didn’t know OS handled CapsLock, and while we’re at it Shift key on each keyboard is handled by OS too? I shall need too look into QMK docs further on how this works with hardware and firmware to do this right.

how did you drive this much LEDs ? did you use logic level shifter in them ?

No need, the ATMega32u4 has 5V outputs, so the data pin of the LEDs can be directly connected (with the appropriate resistor in series for safety)

@@DarkArtGuitars I know but the current limit is 500mA for USB right?

Yes, but that's plenty bright enough. You just have to limit the brightness in software, but qmk has a max brightness setting for that.@@pooyahesabi

also maybe try to paint the marking with white/gray nail polish (paint). you could use a coarse syringe to carefully add the paint into the engravings.

Cool idea, though the engravings aren't really deep enough for that, they're more markings than cavities.
