I am revisiting my flared top hat pattern that I made a few years ago. I only ever made the basic hat, and never did anything to add some character. I got inspired to combine foamsmithing with 3D printing, and this is what I came up with, a steampunk, Mad Hatter style hat with a propeller that spins in the wind! The video starts with the base hat already made, you can watch the video on how I make it by clicking the above link.

Nice update to this project. It was one of the first that I did, though my skills left a lot to be desired at that time. Some time later, I may go back and make this again. I like the idea of the fan, makes a simple project a lot cooler. I might even mesh the inner tube to allow for airflow, as I found that these top hats really store in the heat...

Yeah, even better would be to power the fan so it could create airflow to keep cool!

@LostWax

For this one I used 3dcoat, they have a scaled down version for 3d printing called 3dcprinting. I think they have a free trial too. Definitely takes some getting used to, but it has a lot of cool things about it.

I have the other hat you designed. I've wanted to add a miniature smoke machine and a smoke stack like you made for this hat. Any ideas on a miniature smoke machine? I was thinking about using a vape and adapting it.
@LostWax
@LostWax 4 жыл бұрын
Yeah, a vape, and then some sort of pump. I have one from a weed sprayer I was thinking of trying.
@paulfredricks1066
@paulfredricks1066 4 жыл бұрын
You have to make a collar for the vape to push air into it, unless you completely dismantle it. I think miniature air pumps are available. Part of the truck is activating the vape. I think they work on suction. Bit I did just see this. www.etsy.com/listing/689884220/mini-smoke-machine-usb-powered-remote?gpla=1&gao=1&&gclid=CjwKCAjw57b3BRBlEiwA1ImytreHZi723BEBS7TwYIZrYSWsvveO1uplfcAjbyx2cCu7ZNRtSKmLihoCVE0QAvD_BwE

Do you need to print out both the curved and flat duct pieces? Could you just print out the curved one and make the tube inside longer? I don't have a 3d printer and I'm using a service called shapeways, but printing both pieces as oppossed to just one costs almost $20 more signed, -a student trying to make a costume with a very small budget
@LostWax
@LostWax 3 жыл бұрын
Yes, I think you could do that, but your construction will have to be altered a bit. There won't be any of the sticking out on the inside of the hat, so you'll need to figure out how you want it to connect with the tube. Of course, easier would be to just forget the tube, it's not really necessary and the hat will be much cooler to wear because you will have some airflow. Hope that helps a little!
