It's a common problem that the path around the side of the house becomes a muddy, inconvenient access point. A step stone side path is a great solution that provides easy, clean access to the backyard, while being easy to build DIY.
In this how to video, Jason Hodges takes you through the steps of measuring, excavating, spacing and laying the pavers, and adding the finishing touches such as decorative pebbles or aggregate.
For step stone paths like this, Jason Hodges recommends using Adbri Masonry Euro® Stone pavers;

Thanks again, Jason. Gives me something to work on. I am planning some raised beds, I think stepping stones will be the answer in between beds.

Hi Jason, this is great! Your technique seems to be practical and yet effective and efficient. I have come across videos where it is weed mat,gravel, sand, then pavers surrounded by stones. Gravel and sand appears to hold the pavers steady for a long time. Id like to use your technique, but just have some questions: - my soil is a bit clayish. I will probably remove a few centimeters of top soils to level it with the patio it will surround. Would your technique of using cement to hold the pavers for years work on clayish soil? - how thick should the cement mix be in between the soil and pavers? - is that really 100mm thickness of stones from the bottom of soil or were you referring to the type of stones with size of 100mm each. Thanks heaps in advance and with your technique, it looks like it is going to save a whole lot of money and time!

Hi there, thank you for your question. For a stepping stone pathway there is no need to put down a compacted sand base. A cement and sand mix combined with water is enough to hold down a paver as a stepping stone. Please feel free to contact adbrimarketing@adbri.com.au if you have any other questions.

this project: ........... no need tampering, screeding; ---------- no need fabric/weed control mat; ........... no need gravel base/paver sand base/dust base/road base; ........... cost effectiveness, save time and money (unless it is a full paver patio for instance)😄

We did a path like that and it looks great. My question is, how do you stop the pebbles from being kicked over the pavers?
@AdbriMasonryAus
@AdbriMasonryAus Жыл бұрын
Hi Sharon, there's not too much you can do about that. We usually find the larger the pavers for the step stones, the less likelihood there is of pebbles being kicked up. Though sweeping a few pebbles off the steppers is a lot easier than sweeping a whole foot path.

Thanks mate - your videos are informative, easy to follow and fun to watch. Question - I have a concrete walkway, would it be safe to lay out paver stones on the concrete walkway and spread pebbles. That way concrete walkway will completely hide and the paver stone path will look nice.

Hi there, That's fantastic that you enjoyed it. If you would like to create a step stone pathway onto an existing concrete slab, this is possible. Please ensure to adhere the paver onto the slab using a concrete mix.

For steppingstone pathways, you could use a quick dry ready mix. However, you would need to mix what you need for each individual paver as you go or run the risk of it drying before you’ve laid the whole path.

Hi , I've had to add fill to the area I'm going to pave. Do I need to wack the fresh dirt down before I lay the pavers. Cheers
@AdbriMasonryAus
@AdbriMasonryAus Жыл бұрын
If you've had to add dirt to the area to make it level, it's not a bad idea to wack down the dirt. But if you excavated down to level, the dirt should be compacted enough.

Hi Mate, very useful video. Quick question, is the sand and cement good enough for the base on clay soil?
@AdbriMasonryAus
@AdbriMasonryAus 2 жыл бұрын
Hi there, Thank you! Yes the sand and cement will still work. Clay can move with damp and dry conditions, but it shouldn't move too much for a step stone path.

Can i use a ready mix cement and sand? Like the quick drying ones for cracks? Or use a tile adhesive instead?
@AdbriMasonryAus
@AdbriMasonryAus 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Manuela, For steppingstone pathways, you could use a quick dry ready mix. However, you would need to mix what you need for each individual paver as you go or run the risk of it drying before you’ve laid the whole path - as you stated above, the quick dry ready mix is primarily made for cracks. The use of tile adhesive is highly not recommended. It is also costly compared to a sand and cement mix. Please feel free to email adbrimarketing@adbri.com.au if you have any other questions. Kind regards, Adbri Masonry Team
