Of course kitties roaming around and offering no assistance whatsoever, LOUNGE LIZARDS! I'm always fascinated to see pictures of nature growing over man-made items - trees can literally envelop entire bikes, tires, tools - nature's way of saying "Get out of the way, you're in my lane." Seriously Dawn, there's NO area of that wall repair that can be criticized - you did superb work, bravo! Ben, since you've created all those slices in the root, wouldn't it be easier to hammer a sharp chisel to chip away the wood in slices? Carry on, haha, I'm only a lazy woman sitting on her couch with air-conditioning, drinking tea and snacking apple crisp.

Distemper is found in animals and is very contagious. Dogs, raccoons, skunks, foxes and large cats such as lions and tigers can get distemper.

Dawn great work on repairing the stonework on the outbuilding .You are a perfectionist . Ben that root will have stones embedded right through it.Be careful with your chainsaw. My late husband used do what you have done then he would get a steel wedge and a sledge hammer and hammer it out .Very hard work Ben. Possibly someone may have a better idea. I remember the Walpamur Distemper it came in a paper bag in a tin can that had to be mixed with water. In use in the early 50s.Take care of yourselves and God bless you both xx

The bedroom should feel warmer with the cold blue paint removed, and warmer sill with the fire lit 😂😂😂

Remember that crow bar I said you should get? It would make short work of removing the stones from the stump. And you could use it split off chunks when you have made a cut. One or two steel wedges would also help. A root is like a knot in timber. No grain to split along. It will be hard work...

I'm lucky enough to have 5 acres of woodland I look after and I started out with the exact chainsaw you have. Although I've moved on to Stihl stuff now , because some of the plastic casing near the drive sprocket started to melt a bit over prolonged use, I still use it occasionally. I guess I've had it about 5 years or so and I've always loved the way it starts so easily. I've found it's always useful to have a backup for when I get my main saw stuck and I can then usually free the stuck bar with my reserve saw. One of my errors when starting off was that I unknowingly hand sharpened one side of the chain more vigorously than the other. This made any cut I did go a bit wonky. It looks like the sharpening tool you have will prevent that from happening so I think that was a good investment. The stonework renovation is absolutely amazing. I hope you're really proud of the way it's turning out cos it brought a tear to my eye seeing how confidently you apply the lime mortar. Well done to you both and keep the videos coming.

Hi, you're doing great. I would recommend splitting the tree trunk into wedges. Get wedges and a proper hammer for that. Or maybe a scallion. Save time sharpening your chainsaw chain. The wall is already taking shape beautifully with the new renovation. Jaen keep going.

Exhaustion brings lack of motivation, you must pace yourselves and use labour saving machinery if you can afford it occasionally, to help prevent the physical tiredness. You need to avoid burnout so treat yourselves to the odd spa day or long weekend away preferably somewhere sunny. You are doing very well and this is a huge ambitious project, which you only have to do the once! When the building work is completed you will have time to enjoy the house and surroundings.

Hi Dawn and Ben. It is a pleasure to see you again, despite that small discouragement, giving your best to advance in the different stages and fronts of your journey. Dawn, your work with the stones is turning out wonderful, impeccable and looks very close to how it should have been originally, I don't know anything about building with stones, but the “castellated” and the lines of force that can be seen appear very solid and geometric, very logical (as well as aesthetically beautiful). Seeing yourself making fine details “Edging” with the mason's ax indicates that your expertise grows with each day of work accomplished. Bravo!!! I don't know about building with stones, but I know something about rebellious paints. An entire wall peeled off and 2 or 3 “Plasticized” pieces that don't come out with anything!!! What they are doing is correct "Moisten", but when this doesn't work either, there are some tricks: -Moisten with hot water (whatever your hand can handle). -Moisten with water with detergent, a little dishwashing liquid, the glycerin in soaps makes the humidity remain acting for longer. -Moisten with embossed paper (kitchen towel, paper), wet a piece of towel and “stick” it to the stubborn paint, so that it maintains the humidity even more. And after a while scrape with the spatulas. There are even more stubborn paints, which can be tested by heating the stain with a hair dryer. Indoors, I would not recommend an industrial heat gun since when the paint overheats, it releases toxic gases. Finally, as for these pieces of paint, you can sand them by hand with medium grit, superficially, and then moisten. This episode was very varied, and very entertaining, even with a hint of “Monty Python”, the awning box had its role. Ben said in a comment that he will welcome ideas for the big root thing. They already recommended the Chisel and Hammer, which was my first thought, I would recommend “Metal Wedges and the Mallet” to have them on hand, in case the chisel gets stuck… To weaken the root without fear of hitting a stone and “Killing the edge” there are some drill bits for multiple materials, without having to change from one to another, there are several brands, I don't know if they are large sizes, but I think that is worth investigating. www.izartool.com/es/noticias/item/313-1876-multimat-broca-todos-materiales Well, in the end and to encourage you in any way I can, you already know that it was my birthday recently (61), just yesterday we were able to get together to celebrate it as a family, our father, my sister, my nephew and my little niece. Really good to see the peach colour of the lime expanding and the hard blue paint disappearing. It is like a map of the world. Distemper is a serious disease in dogs.

Something tells me that sunburn will not help your motivation one bit Dawn 😉😂 (obviously I hope you didn't burn) So Ben, have you started measuring and drawing plans for the barn doors you want to build? 🤔 ( no pressure at all there, apologies 😳) That was a fun wee piece with the change between that calm of Dawn's stonework to the frantic brutality of the chainsaw and the music to match both 🤣🤣 For that root Ben how about using a cheap 10mm auger bit on a drill as the tip will stop drawing as soon as it hits stone and you should be able to quickly build up a good map of where the stone is and where or where not to cut with the chainsaw.. Great video again this week and nice to see even move strength going back into that old barn wall,, Dawn,, don't forget that stone by stone you are bringing an utter wreck back from the brink of falling down that's an incredible achievement with no small amount of pressure you've taken on your shoulders, it's no small wonder you just can't be arsed sometimes and need a rest from it. Wow!!! Dawn, your skills with stone and plaster are amazing. The wall and door way repairs look fabulous and extremely professional! They look like they had been professionally done by someone with years of experience in building and repairing stone walls! Never mind your expertise in scraping paint! HA, HA! Ben - building, paint scraping and equipment maintenance and repair - expert in all and that’s just a start to your fab filming and editing skills. I could watch your masonry repairs all day, good job Dawn. It might be easier to use some metal wedges in the chainsaw slots you've mad in the stump Ben hammer stem in and the wood should split if you go with the grain. XX

Bit by bit you will get there. It’s easy to not be motivated when the results are slow to come and you feel overwhelmed by what you know is still there to do. Dawn you are really doing a good job on the wall. I worry about that one corner with the root pushing thru on the outside. I hope that you will let Ben help you with that corner in fact I would love for you to teach him what you’ve learned so that he could work on the wall in other areas. You know, Ben, I’ve been looking into getting rid of stumps on my property and I’ve been reading that you can do this cuts like you did and fill them with epsom salt and they will die down fairly quickly. Maybe that would work in the root too. You might not get it as fast, but it might be an option. Your idea about the walls in the house is so sensible. I love it! Have a great week! See you next time! It's been a stormy and wet week here outside of Cape Town as well, really freezing cold as well. Every time you think the rain has passed it just pours down again for hours, everything is being done quickly when you can.👍

Dawn is doing really well on the stone wall repair. Ben, I think you would find it very therapeutic to wack at the stump with an axe. It's also easier to sharpen an axe head when you hit a rock :) Are you a "Footy" fan? I think England is in the Euro final against Spain today. So glad you invested in a canopy as this will help you to continue with most of the outside work regardless of any rain. Dawn is doing an amazing job with the stonework and she looks so chilled out doing it. Is there any chance of the farmer neighbour putting a chain around that root and helping to shift it perhaps? the shed or future workshop is gonna need a long beam from the top of one gable end to the other, the cheapest option would be using a round log, such as a pine tree or something like a telegraph pole, & maybe get the farmer with a front bucket on his tractor to lift it up into place, i myself would be on the hunt for a nice straight tree, cos wood of that diamiter that you,ll need to span that distance will be expensive, the top of the walls just need some sqaure beams fastend to the top of the walls once the walls are level on top, & cos they don,t have to be in one continus length, some of the old floor joists would do, & then all it needs is 3x2s from the top beam to the bottom, then corrugated tin sheets etc, anyway a huge well done for what you have already done. The place will be lovely

I watch a lot of KZfaq videos like this and have to tell you I throughly enjoy watching yours! Some channels you might want to check out that are doing similar things that you are doing is. Escape to Rural France, Domaine Sauvage and the original Homestead. They just put a new roof on there home and they used panels that look like the terracotta tiles. No idea on price or if it would suit your needs but might be something to look at? I don’t know a lot about home repairs but have done some and I can tell you one thing for sure. Get those gutters fixed before winter. Water will destroy everything. Even if it is just enough so that the water is not going down the side of your house. If it is getting between the render and stone of your house it will ruin any work you have done. That should be the number one priority. Looking forward to seeing more videos. Have you considered using Farrow and Ball paint? Although it is expensive it’s totally worth it as it goes a long way, allows the walls to breathe as it’s made of natural clay and is stunningly beautiful.

I made a living for a couple of years using a chain saw and i got the same sharpener you got cause i hate using the file that sharpener works great.One thing with saws ya got to be mindfull of and thats where the tip of the bar is at cause you can get kickback which can be deadly.I'd say you got all kinds of stone in that stump dulling and knicking your teeth and if your going thru alot of gas i'd sat its a dull chain cause you should get about 45 mins a tank with that saw.Your chips when sharp should be the avg length of your finger nail if its powder the chain is dull.They are a great tool the more ya use it the more you'll like it .

I've been watching from the beginning, now up to 19. I love the house. There was plenty to daunt you but you kept going. It was heroic. Those veneered plywood panels must have been 60s or 70s effort to smarten up, and so depressing to see what the wood was like behind them and the other gubbins. So impressed. Also saw another video about the grant that people get and the 13 month time limit, and having to fulfil conditions. Maybe a good thing you didn't go that route so you can do it at your own pace. I know you told us how the grant added to the house price and that you were one month before it was extended.

Try just drilling holes in the root of the tree in several places, pour in salt and cover it. Natural way to kill a root and even though it takes a bit of time, it is a cheaper option. 😊

You two scraping the blue paint off reminds me of having to strip wall paper. I wonder why the walls are salmon colored underneath? What two drastically different colors. Are you a colored wall type people or do you like a crisp white wall with colorful decoration… I think I remembered you like gothic type decorations. Dawn you are getting better and better on those stone walls. Ben I really had know idea that you had to sharpen each tooth of the blade…glad you found a bit of a swifter way to do that. And dogs do get distemper, or at least our dog gets vaccinated so he doesn’t get it. Dawn I’m with you it’s been a bit of a strange month for us here in Maryland. Ben with the stump, I would use some fire starters and see if you can burn it rather than chainsaw, jam paper and fire starters into a slit you make

Caused my brain to do back flips, trying to thank of an angle on the stump. Drawing mostly a blank. Only thing that kind of sticks, is drill. The rocket stove idea works on stumps well. Would need to bore two intersecting holes. As hard as you say and with the stone imbedded, bit selection would be tough. Wonder if there are any old timers around there, that have seen this issue before?

When your doing pointing, shouldn't you start at the bottom/ground and work your way up, since the bottom is where all of the weight of the other stones sits? You're doing a great job by the way!

Continue to be so impressed with your work on the wall. It is a sort of puzzle solving and meditation. You will get better and better as you go.

Use a sand blaster

I think there is some kind of stump disolving product you can put in those grooves you have cut and it will take care of that over time. Check with the hardware store

Is there any way off digging a little under the root and popping some kindling underneath and burning it? Just depends what’s around and if you can have outdoor burn offs but being rural I’d imagine you’re ok. Just save your chainsaw blade if there is stone is within the root. I’d imagine it would burn pretty quick? Just an idea. Enjoying you both transforming the cottage. You’re both doing a fantastic job.

It may take you a while, but you might want to try a splitting wedge on the tree stump doesn’t make it easier. It might get the job done around the rocks.
