DIY Storage Bench made from recycled wood and left over laminate flooring. The wood came from old bench seats in a school gym that were being replaced. Here is another project I made from more of the same timber : • DIY Hall / Console Table
The walnut laminate flooring was left over from when I was flooring my house. Its actually a great way to use up any flooring you have left over and the furniture you make will also match your floor!
Any house especially kids can never have enough storage so this is a great way to hide any toys or other things you would like to store away from view while still having quick and easy access to. It also acts a bench seat which can easily seat two people.
The floor in the storage bench is semi solid flooring, its was also walnut and I just had enough bits to do the floor. I went with this as it is stronger than the laminate. These bits were also left over from another room.
The only thing I purchased for this project was the chain which cost €1.70 from my local hardware store.
Obviously it would have been easier and quicker to buy new timber but I think it was a good way to reuse old and left over wood that would probably just end up rotting.

I really like the ease and simplicity of this project, not to mention the effective use of left-over laminate flooring and the lack of fancy tools . You don't need a fully-equipped wood shop to make nice things for your home.

My workshop tools cost about $25,000 and was built up over 10 years but I can do everything by hand and I mean using traditional non powered hand tools. . People can do detailed woodwork with the most basic hand tools if they tried. I still do work that is completely traditional the way I was taught as a child.

Greetings Eamon Thank you for posting. Like other subscribers, I appreciated your workmanship using common woodworking tools. I like that you re-purposed materials that were headed for a landfill. As an alternative to sanding the paint off, is the use of a scraper - less dust, more effort likely. When I was a kid in a one room country schoolhouse, we used (the students) broken glass shards to scrape the varnish off our desks so they could be re-varnished. Worked very well. No gloves or safety glasses in those days. Need a sharp edge? - break some glass. What kid doesn't like breaking some glass? Blessings to you and yours.
