You gotta be the coolest traditional artist ever, with all those self-made gadgets to help you out - it is awesome to see that your creativity extends from the artistic realm to the crafts too. Also, at first when you showed your new palette I was like "Why the hell he has a CINTIQ tablet attached like that?", haha. It looks super cool and super "sci fi-ish"! I've had experience with oil paitings when I was 17, it was cool but I was already too accostumed to watercolors (to this day, it is my favorite traditional media, alongside ballpoint pens), so I didnt really adapt to the materials. But it is still cool to follow the processes of it, and all your tips to make it easier for the painters like you =)

This is such a humbling and inspiring video! Really drives home the point of not having to spend lots of money to be successful and pointing out that if you ARE gonna spend money, do it on the things that matter like the paint, brushes and surface.

I’ve been working on making my own easel. It’s portable for out doors and it’s a combination of scraps like you. Love creativity as an artist. No one has what you have and you work on something that you will cherish because YOU MADE IT!! Love this, you keep on surprising me!! ♥️👍🏼♥️👍🏼

I'm such a huge admirer of your work - particularly your waves and sea scapes! I have a problem.......I too seem to have got stuck. I seem to have lost my incentive along the way and can just look at a started painting for weeks and not finish it! I had to stop taking lessons as that was the only tine I used to paint. Yet I love it when I do it! Maybe watching you in detail will give me back that incentive....? Fingers crossed!

Hey, Mr Tischler! Super video! I have been painting for about 3,5 years, and I use a glass plate from an old stereo rack shelf. Its about the same size as the one you are painting on. What I haven`t done is to spraypaint the back with a mid value as you did in this video, but now I will do exactly that. I have watched many of your videos up through the years, and I really love many of your paintings. My goal, as yours, is to create the realism and subtle hue and valueshift that only the human eye (or brain) can detect, but at the same time push foreward a "romantic" feel by still making it painterly, instead of overdoing it and falling into the realm of hyperrealism. What I find most exciting is to create landscapes out of my own imagination, but I do get inspired by some photographs that I find online or from my own shots. By creating things as you go along will strengthen your abillity to connect to the intuitive aspect of painting, where you really are put to the test of applying your knowledge about light, complementary effects, tones and values. And sometimes the insufficiency of working from "pure" imagination is what gives a painting that human touch and playfullness that sometimes can get lost when using photoreference. I only use reference when I need a strong convincing portrayal of an animal, human figure, building or object in a landscape scene. It would be impossible for me to paint a convincing depiction of a bear, horse or car without using a photoreference. But when painting sea- and landscapes, I am pretty close nailing it almost perfectly. Much thanks to you and a few other contemporary artist (at elast 10 "youtube" artists), and my will to not settle for mediocrity. I wish you well, and start building some muscle again. Love these ideas! I actually frequent a second hand store in my town just looking for old art books and old easels or paint boxes people have donated. I've picked up about 5 different easels in various conditions for very cheap and I've been able to re-purpose parts of these easels for nice studio setups like your showing here.

andrew i love your work. i am 69. offered a scollarship in 1966 high school, but went on to support myself working with the railroad. now i am semi retired and just back to painting one year now. wild cats and grazing animals,god blest me to come back to it well. i do like o watch what you do it helps me alot on my difficult areas mixing oils etc..thanks again keep up the good work and show. lmk.

I have been using a glass for over a year love it easy to take care of. like the idea of how you made it out of a fridge shelf.

Great Ideas for the palette Andrew. As an extra, I painted the underside of glass palette as follows: Central area a mid-tone grey. The Top area a strip of squares painted with the colours I use. The bottom area a strip of squares indicating the 9-value scale. A good idea to paint in reverse order, so that once flipped around it is correct. With oils it may take a long time to set, so adding a medium helps. Once the swatches were dry, I glued on a masonite backing. A basic frame can be added to give the finished look.

Could you make a video about what kind of chair you use? One of the most important things in a painting studio is a good chair, comfortable and ergonomic, as we spend many hours sitting while working. The thing is that a good chair is very expensive. I have already tested some but they all become uncomfortable after a few hours of use. What kind of chair do you use?

You can also purchase already painted tempered glass. I purchased two from the United States to Japan - one A4 and the other A3 sizes. Just say how strong they are is Imagine each of them came just in envelopes! I am a clumsy elephant in a porcelain shop so they are gifts from God to me. Oh, they are also very inexpensive, but when you knock on them with your knuckle the sound is a hundred percent glass. Of course I am not sure if tempered glass was available when you made this video. Andrew, thanks for great videos and and stay in good health. By the way, everyone will agree you are equally great scholar as painter.

I think one of my neighbors fixes or sells refrigerators so they often have refrigerator parts out for disposal. kicking myself for not grabbing some of those glass shelves before! definitely gonna make a palette out of them next time I find any. thanks for the tip!

Great tutorial... got mine from my daughter’s little glass table that she wasn’t using anymore, the glass was layed on a grey background already so it was perfect in size and colour and o easy to clean with a scraper 👍

A brilliant idea and very informative video Andrew. I have made a glass palette from recycling but nothing as elaborate as yours. I had a large picture framed under glass which I no longer wanted. So I removed it and put a white cardboard instead and sealed it in the frame so I can use it. Great ideas . I await the next video . I also use glass as a palette. I actually did something very similar to a piece of glass and some wood that I found. I did it myself, I didn't buy anything and it is very similar to yours. Very useful. Unfortunately I can't post a photo here. Nice job Andrew!

there are plenty of resources in 2dollar shops ,K mart and Ikea for building your studio equipment. Just be prepared to smashem up a bit and canabalise parts. then mix and match.
