Happy New Year everyone! First video of the year. Let's start it creating something. 😅
Here's my version of a DIY sub kick mic. I tried to make it look close to a Solomon LoFreq Sub Microphone I think I was close. I'm pretty happy with how it turned out. I got to use it for another upcoming video and editing was easier. I did not have to play with a lot with plugins after having a sub kick mic. This project is a big W! Especially for budget drum recording setup.
If you’re trying this project try to find a good sub driver. Doesn’t have to be big. 👌🏽 I got mine from a loca shop here in Singapore but here are some cheap 6” sub woofer I found on Amazon: (affiliate links)
6" Woofer
1 - amzn.to/3PwEv7A
2 - amzn.to/3S0R7W3
3 - amzn.to/3OuEUGj
8" Woofer

2 - amzn.to/3RXtEFn
Shell (look for used concert tom or kids drums)

Grill

Finally someone who understands the importance of mounting the driver inside an enclosure. So many DIYers overlook this conpletely.

@paulanderson Its actually not as important as you might think. Its more a matter of taste. The main reasons that enclosures are a good design is that, yes there can be a different resonance(longer was the idea) but the basic sound/freq would sound about the same with or without it. 2- for off axis rejection/bleed, 3-for style and convenient mounting. But its def not a make or break thing. I guarantee you that there has been many many recording done using just a bare speaker. Anyway, just food for thought. Just saying the difference isnt as big as you would think.

@@jamescassidy4045 I'm thinking in terms of low end response. Picking up the 'click' of the beater on the kick side of the drum is fairly easy. But the low frequency stiff {long wavelength) a bare speaker is going to get almost the same amount of pressure either side of the diaphragm. Then again, your point is valid, that dc spike will be picked up regardless of whether or not there is an enclosure. Recording and mastering are simultaneously precise arts and vague sciences. Good discussion and thanks to you for your input. It's nice to have a discussion such as this one.

FINALLY someone used a panel mounted xlr jack instead of just dangling loose cable. Nice build. Looks awesome.

That sub looks very professional, and it sounds really good. I also like that black carbon fiber wrap, I think I might wrap my entire drum kit with it someday. But your sub kick mic looks really well made, I like it! great job! 👍

You should put something at the back so that the speaker will have some air pressure to push against. This gives it the spring effect. Some kind of black rubber maybe from a used inner tube would be ideal, or plywood with a port hole made from a card board roll like most speaker cabs have. It does make a difference. Also experiment by placing it at a sweet spot on the head for maximum bass. Placing a mike on a pillow on the inside of the bass drum helps as well.

@@ProjectBeats_ Going to try it! My speaker already has the wire soldered to it. I was going to leave some length of wire, cut it and then solder that to an XLR input like you did. Will I need to remove the original solder on the speaker and reverse it or can I just reverse the solder on to the XLR input?
@ProjectBeats_
@ProjectBeats_ 4 жыл бұрын
I would try to just reverse the other end to the xlr. Less soldering to do.

3 years old but, overkill Kick drum sound! Too much Low overload.. You need to roll off the lows on the SE x1D mic if you are using a sub mic. or just put a SM57 inside the kick drum and mix it with the Sub mic.

or you can simply used a combo guitar amp speaker so you get the cabinet already just need to wire it up, and it's perfect, you don't used those type of sub inside the kick drum. good job tho!

Thank you so much! It’s honestly a random pick from my local electronic supply here in Singapore. Just went for the best one I can find that is small enough but with a good low end response.

What is the exact connection with the 3 pins in the XLR?? The speaker gives only 2 pins. I am thinking also the situation of accidentally pressing the phantom power switch on the interface. In that case do we run the danger of damaging the input circuit of the audio interface or the speaker ?
@ProjectBeats_
@ProjectBeats_ 5 ай бұрын
Hey. Quick google would show some diagram connections. Thats just what I did. I have my sub mic on adat interface occasionally, it has to have phantom on for the entire 8mic pre for my other condenser mic, It’s just little louder. Not ideal but Ive no prob.

So you reversed the connection between speaker snd the xlr connector right? What about the ground? Pin1 to the metal psrt of the speaker? And no pad required? Thsnks!
@ProjectBeats_

Dint use pad. I combined - and ground to one wire and then live/+ separate.

Thanks! Got it from a local used drum shop here in Singapore. I’m guessing you can get them from ebay/reverb or local fb marketplace. It’s basically a shell from a kids drums.

Which tom-stand did you use? And where have you connected the ground on the side of the speaker? Because it only has a + and - connection, but the xlr-plug has an extra ground-connection?
@ProjectBeats_
@ProjectBeats_ 3 жыл бұрын
Ground and - together. Thin tom arms that fit. Not the standard size.
