DIY Suet Cakes

Learn how and when to make your own suet cakes for the birds. This no melt variety will take you from fall through spring making sure they get the extra fat they need in the cooler months.

Negative opinions aside. I think you gave a great recipe and ty 4 taking the time to share! No melt depends on ratio of dry ingredients added. Add a bit of yellow cornmeal as well to have a bit of gritty texture and that helps with melting 😉

The main difference between suet and lard is that suet is the hard white fat obtained from cows and mutton while lard is the semi-solid obtained from pigs.

For those who somehow missed the ingredient ratios in the video.. 1 cup birdseed 1/2 cup dried fruit 1/2 cup peanuts 1 cup oats 1 cup melted lard

This is a nice try, but you’re missing a measurement and where to buy a mold that fits a suet cake holder. At the end of the day it is cheaper to buy the cakes for a $1.39 at Menards

They never give clear ratios. Just be thankful that the video is less than ten minutes long.

I make my own suet, and use more lard than the video shows. I really don’t think it’s important. Also, I use dried mealworms, seeds, and high quality, small kibble dog food. Bacon grease too if I have any! The birds love, love, love it! My woodpeckers and jays tear it up, along with about a dozen other species! It’s a $60.00 per month addiction for me!

I make mine with peanut butter added to the lard. I also add red pepper to it, that keeps the squirrels away!!!!

As i was removing the beef caseings from my non gmo turkey sausage , i was like hmm wonder if i can make bird food out of melted down casings ? It is fat after all. - what do you know. Ya can. - maybe even a candle , ( with alot .just been interested lately in how to reuse our acraps we toss every day. Even our orange peels you can make candy or a citrus powder out of .sometimes we can be focused on what we want and not even realize what we have in our hands to work with if we look at life with a different perspective ❤😊

You can find good lard at the better butcher shops. The lard at the grocery store is hydrogenated, which is not good for humans or animals. Or you can easily render it at home from pork fat.

I would imagine it's the ratio used. FYI I only feed birds during winter months.

@@marygeorge2467 doesn't matter. I threw peanuts out for the squirrels, to keep them away from the bread I threw out for the birds!!! The birds took off with the peanuts!! & one squirrel kept coming back for the bread!!! Really !!!🤷🤷🤷

If you scroll through the very lengthy recipe, personal history, etc on OP's website...waaay down the bottom, it says 1 cup. Very annoying.

We only use suet when the weather is cold.

My experience is that gelatin doesn’t hold the cake in temps above freezing.

No. Bacon fat gets rancid very very quickly. Unless they consume the entire batch in a single day, and the bacon grease isn't already old, it's not safe.

You don't need to tell us to "Stir". We can watch, even assume, that. You need to tell us the ratio of dry ingredients to melted lard. Thumbs down.

INGREDIENTS: This recipe makes 1 large suet cake or 2 small ones 1 cup Birdseed ½ cup Dried Fruit (Cherries, Cranberries, Blueberries, etc) ½ cup Peanuts (non-salted only) 1 cup Oats 1 cup Melted Lard/Manteca (Armour) Mixing Bowl Spoon Molds You have to read the information and click on the posted link or you won't see the ingredients.
