I used my Infina Ray thermal camera mounted on a pair of VR googles for under 350 bucks including the camera. I can see over 500yards as clear as day, the simple vr googles allow me to pop my phone in the googles. The whole unit is actually much smaller then these box goggles.

Field testing shows 100 yard detection range and 50 yard identification range on medium size animals. A 13 or 19mm lens FLIR would extend that but it would also narrow the field of view and make it difficult to walk or navigate with the goggles on. I use the goggles to scan and detect animals and while driving my hunting golf cart in complete darkness. I use my Pulsar scope to identify and shoot. 100 yard detection range works perfect for my purpose. Up close resolution is awesome. I can see the thermal footprints left by my cat as it walks across the hardwood floor. If you can get a good deal on a used Flir Vue or Vue Pro, you can build these for way less than any other high resolution thermal out there.
