DIY trike built part 2. Cranks and steering.
Next phase of construction including crank/bottom bracket assembly, with built in adjustability in the form of a QR skewer from the Trek donor bike.
Beginnings of the steering assembly using rod end bearings and aluminium flat bar. Needs some tinkering as the positive camber may be a tad too much. We'll see how it rides before we change anything though.

Really like your build! Thinking about doing something similar myself and the steering to me seems to be the most complicated thing, so your build has really given me som great inspiration. I'm so confused though about the different lengths of the two rod-ends(?)? Seems like the lower one is longer (probably to tilt the wheel slightly to offload som lateral forces on the wheel when turning?) which I understand is ok in a straight line but what happens when you turn? Does it pivot the wheel somehow? Also, how do you experience the wear on the part where the wheel axle is mounted on the alu plate? I understand you're switching to a thicker axle but do you find the alu plate thick enough or any wear on the hole? Are the rodends also 8mm?

Hello, I'm a person who is making a bicycle by referring to your KZfaq video. There is a problem with stiff steering, how did you solve it. Similar to the production, the caster angle and the kingpin angle were given 15 degrees I don't think this is excessive, but the steering is stiff. If anyone knows, please answer.

@@grahammakesstuff.1916 have you considered using box steel to do your next project. I picked up a stick, MIG, TIG inverter for £150 and managed to do gasless mig welds and after some practice, that were strong enough, but not always pretty but can sort that with a £20 grinder from Lidl 😊. For a tilting axle I’d have thought 4” hinge with bearings would probably be strong enough.

Thanks for watching. The wheel/tyre combo is from ebay. They are 20 inch Diamondback BMX wheels and cost me £50 delivered. In a later video I mentioned that the axles are a little thin (9mm) and had started to bend. I've now upgraded to thicker 14mm axles from a wheelchair. Most trike forums recommend at least 12mm.

One of the biggest hang ups I've had with a trike build is how you take a bicycle wheel and mount it with an axle supported on one side of the wheel. Do you modify a stock front wheel or buy the hub like that?

The expensive way is to but trike specific wheels. The cheap was was to buy Diamondback BMX wheels with the thickest axles I could find (8mm) which eventually started to. bend. I'm now trying a pair of wheelchair wheels 16mm axles. At the moment they show no signs of bending. Watch this space.
