The problem with youtube is the BS and the TONS of inexperienced advice. I have used tyvek tents for years and still use the one in the vid to this day. It works perfect and lasts a long time for pennies. If you want to do re enactments join a club, but heavy ancient canvas tents are junk. And so is the advice to buy one. And NO HEAT SHIELDING is needed, just buy a stove jack and sew it in on top.

Great! Now I've got something I can use that half roll of Tyvek for that's been sitting in the corner of my garage for the last 7 years. Thanks Yank!

Very nice tipi. I built one for my grandkids in the backyard. We cut down some young oak and pine trees, about 4" by 20'. Lashed them together at the top, raised it and covered with plastic sheeting. This is just for them to play in. They can have a fire, as it vents well. They have like 20' of floor space and it is really large. They love it. It was for fun, I figured the first good windy storm it would be gone, but it's still standing and they still spend the night in it.

I'm reluctant to lay out the cash before I am certain it will take paint and if the paint can cover the big Tyvek prints. I had planned to use duck cloth and wooden poles but this tyvek is very promising. It might be light enough to use pvc pipes. I think inch and a half will slide inside of 2 inch so the poles would be collapsible. That would eliminate the center pole and help stabilize our bigger unit. Your design is compact and very clever. Congrats for keeping at it till done.

very cool.... good use of tyvek.... I would have never thought of using the tyvek.... I cannot wait to for part 2..... the venting system was genius, seems a lot more durable and usable than just opening and folding back the top flaps like traditional tepees use..

Tyvek tape, available in double sided, can be used to protect/ reinforce the edges and to attach multiple sheets together. I really like this design and hope to build one myself in the near future. A 9' x 150' roll of tyvek is about $150, cut that in half and tape together with double sided tape for a 17.5" x 75' sheet. Cut that into 2 half circles of 17.5' x 35'. I think I can make 2 of these double size for less than $250; complete.

Great video, inspired me to build an 8' x 10' prospecters tent out of tyvek using carpet tape. Snap in tie downs work well. Stayed dry in the rain. Extremely loud though, softening the tyvek helps. Also built the Bivy sack.

Wow, that is real nice. Im a stealth/gorilla camper and would have to dust it a bit to make it a bit more stealth but no doubt the second best I have EVER seen . No - that says a lot being Ive seen tipis going for $1200.00 and this is standing with them. Simple-light-tough, what more could a camper want? saving to my (new word) list. Thanks for this GREAT vid.

I wanted something portable so I made mine from pvc pipe fittings, then draped over a sewn canvas. This made it modular. Historicaly the ridgepoles were very tall and so draping the cured leather was difficult to do. Wigwams were far easier. With it modular, essentially even kids could construct and deconstruct the frame much like the old tinker toys. However canvas ain't great as a long term covering. Many plastics are durable especially with grommets to resist tearing, but they can't handle the baking effects of the sun. Tyvex is used in industry for clean room gowns as it's durable and water resistent.

Great Job! YP-- Something to think about for future projects: 1.Cut tyvek, polyester, or nylon fabrics with a sharpened soldering iron or hot knife to prevent fray. 2.Polyester webbing has a much better UV rating than Nylon. (think seat belt webbing) 3.A good used industrial sewing machine can be had for around $350-$400 (consew 226 or similar walking foot variant). Note on sewing: The right tool for the job makes all the difference in the world. But I know that I don't need to tell you that.:)

back when i did construction/siding the house wraps we used could be sealed or welded together by useing an old electric iron... we would use news paper so that the iron itself would not touch the house wrap. it takes a little getting use too, but worked great for mating two or more pieces together, So you dont have to be limited by the size of the house wrap for the tent, Tho I never used this with the Tyvek brand itself, but it worked on the house wraps we used. just some food for thought

I would be grateful if you would try painting the scraps to learn if the paint will hold. I suspect latex would work best as it is somewhat flexible. If you already trashed the scraps, I'll try to find some at a construction site. I intend to make a full scale project of it by letting the kids do some art work. maybe some animals normally found in North America and whatever they come up with. Lowes has a roll of 9 ft x 100 ft for $100 after tax. That's enough for the outer and inner skins.

i ended up buying a wood 'tent' stove/heater on eBay (about $100, including shipping), since I don't have access to a torch for building one out of an ammo can. Assembling the stovepipe sections...they ship flat, have to be rolled and locked into a cylindrical shape manually...was the only real challenge. But its up and running, even had a successful test burn, so I'm jazzed about that. Might be worth the look, if you need an emergency wood heater/stove.

Bravo ! Nicely done and full marks on the video editing and commentary. I'll be very interested in seeing how you fashion a stove for it. 3lbs ! Wow. I wonder how much some space blanket "patches" carpet-taped on the inside would help in terms of reflecting convection heat back inside the space. Anyway, thank you for investing the time and energy to share this gem with us out here. (I enjoyed the bivy video as well)

I notice you turned the side with the print to the inside of the tent. Have you tried wetting it to see if it leaks? On houses the printed side is oriented outwards. I just wonder if that makes a difference with which way moisture moves through the material. The Tyvek site would have you believe moisture can only move through the material from the plain side. I had considered making a 16 footer for my youth group so I came on the YT looking for suggestions and found you! Nice video by the way.

awesome idea man, I ran across this video a year ago and have been thinking about it since.I just finished making mine and it turned out quite well. instead of sewing it, I used contact cement which I have been experimenting with on Tyvek and have had excellent results. Wondering about heating it now, I just tried a small fire and even with good ventilation it got pretty damn smokey unless you were laying down. If I raised the fire it would help, but if I did that, I might as well commit to a stove. any ideas on a packable lightweight stove? Anyway, thanks for the video.

Also, it's hard to put it upnin the wind, have any pointers for that. .. I'm in the testing phase before I install the stove Jack, but I need to stand it up (which I have just not perfectly) before I can decide where to put the stove...anuly of your experience would be great man, and thanks again for all the help!
