My old computer was having a tough time rendering my video footage in 4k resolution, so I did the only logical thing and built a new one. I designed and built this computer case to really push the limits of my design skills and woodworking skills. When building a computer you have to not only think about looks, but also design for cable management, airflow, dimensional clearances, and future expandability. I have been building computers for over 20 years and this was my first attempt at building myself a case that would suit my needs.

I was thinking that I don't feel like buying a case when I suddenly realized I can expend more effort making a wooden one because I think it would look really cool, so really thank you for this video. I plant to make mine out of mahogany with brass accents. I was wondering if it wood be safe but then realized it was a silly thought since the components themselves would fail before it even manages to leave a mark but I just wanted to see at least one other person doing it.

I think it was a great design. I would have liked to see it done with magnets for every removable panel. Maybe mixing in a few more exotic types of wood for your accents like black and white ebony or some flashy box elder. Obviously, that all depends on your taste. I like darker stained wood myself.

Great looking project, and far more than what I could hope to achieve with my lack of tools. Here is a creative feedback however for a future build. Make it lighter~ The base and the top of the case being so thick makes the PC look excessively heavy. Use skinnier wood panels wherever possible. and or use creative pattern CNC panels (much like the front panel) to take off material.

I like it but perhaps you could try another side panel version that has the same ventilation holes as the front side panel to be a bit more cohesive. Also the tempered glass side panel does feel a bit out of place with the wooden asthetic. But it does look very professional and clean. I would buy this case if you sold to the UK.

Absolutely gorgeous looking case! I've been searching online for this exact kind of build, but most of the wooden cases seem to be either hyper-modern, or very obviously steampunk themed. I am curious to know if you had any issues at the back where the motherboard and the power box are exposed (dust wise, for example); It looks like there's a bit of a gap, but the angling is hard to see
@EigenDesigns
@EigenDesigns Жыл бұрын
Thanks for the supper Elenaor. So far no issues with functionality with the case (e.g. excessive heat, dust, etc.). The two fans at the front, which have a filter mesh behind them, pull the air into the case so the other small gaps around the power supply and motherboard IO end up pushing air out, thus, it doens't let dust in. Have a great week.

I use kiln dried lumber so there won’t be a drastic change in wood movement over such a short distance. I wouldn’t expect anything more than 1/32” or so for such a small panel of wood. Good question though!
@davidmoffitt981
@davidmoffitt981 2 жыл бұрын
It's a gorgeous build and amazing effort. It's kind of a shame to have rattle canned the ply - either should use MDF (or even melamine) there, or stained it. My only other thing I would suggest is aligning the back IO plate to the wood - you just set the motherboard down and started drawing, having some kind of recess carved either with the CNC or hand chisel to bring the IO from the MB and PCI slots closer to the rear wood might be worth the effort. Cool build overall tho - LOVE the maple dividers you did, and that chamfer is such a nice touch.

great work. 18:03 you might get better temps if you removed the [Top - Forward Fan]. testing has been done on airflow etc, and top fans such as this can end up disrupting airflow from the [Front Fans]. they can suck the front intake air up & out so a substantial portion of it doesn't make it to the CPU & GPU, leaving them to use the stagnant ambient air. Positioning the the Top Fan in the rear for exhaust would help drag air through the entire PC. this would yield better airflow over your CPU, resulting in lower CPU temps, and lower ambient temps which would benefit the GPU as well. *it wouldn't really matter except you placed some high-end components in there, and if you were to utilize their potential you might see some heating issues.

since wood does not conduct electricity like metal I am guessing this is probably safer than typical cases but I am not an engineer. The case I have has a very metallic feel to it. I've also seen laptops that are built poorly in the sense that the manufacturer designed it and it shorted out the motherboard because it somehow touched the internal components. Laptops are mobile and receive a lot of bumping. Do you feel this case or even a plastic case say made from legos could be better that what is sold in stores or does it just not matter at all the material of the case once the motherboard is on the raisers? Thank you!
@EigenDesigns
@EigenDesigns 11 ай бұрын
As long as your motherboard is on risers your electronics are well shielded from the case and don't pose much of a risk of electrical issues. The bigger issue with computers is heat disappation rather than electrical conductivity.

The finished product looks great! However, it's important to carefully inspect the ends of your lumber when purchasing and during the milling process. It's a good idea to anticipate having to cut off 1-3 inches from each end due to end checks and end-grain issues, so it's wise to buy longer lumber. Each project is a learning experience, so keep that in mind.

The only negative are the lack finish for the connectors and slots at the back. Something could've been made n the CNC with either an aluminium or brass plate, but your motherboard is too far inside the case to make this easy.

I like the wood but on the topic of feedback: personally I think the colored lights make it look tacky / childish. Same goes for the side window but to a lesser extent. I'd rather hide the ugly plastic gamer astethic of the pc components behind something. I'd much prefer it if it was only wood. But still great craftsmanship 👍

My only issue is the lack of space, but I run 2 video cards due to virtualizing my windows machines for gaming. Do not have a CNC so some of this would be hard for me to do, I am considering making a case myself at some point. Frustrated with cases never meeting my needs.
@EigenDesigns
@EigenDesigns 2 жыл бұрын
That's the beauty of a custom built case - you can make it what you want. If I was running two graphics cards I would probably go with a different design with more cooling. These new cards put off a ton of heat so airflow would be paramount. You can definitely make a case (minus the front panel) without a CNC, so don't let that be a barrier. You can get creative with other tools (e.g. drill, jigsaw, hand saw, etc.). Good luck if you decide to build one.

I gotta be honest with you, those multicolor LEDs spoil the beauty of the case. Those work perfectly with the usual metal cases whether the aesthetic is plain or tryhard, sure. But for this one, I'm not a fan. Maybe don't make the LEDs cycle through all the colors. Less is more, I think.
