Shou Sugi Ban is a DIY Wood Burning Technique. I still get some basic questions about my technique. So I put together a basic tutorial. This tutorial will give the beginning DIY-er the skills to create beautiful finishes using this Wood Burning Technique.

Great video! I suggest trying to use steel wool for brushing after some deep burns. I tried and it removed the char pretty easily, even doing it manually. I ended up with a very nice aspect.

Tried my hand at my first one. I didn’t have any of your stains, but it came out very well still. The texturing from the burn never captures how amazing it actually is. Really takes seeing it in real life to fully appreciate. I used a weed torch. Shelf fell down so I took the opportunity to sand it, remove the hardware (hooks, hanging brackets) and redid it. It’s looks 10 times better. 💪 love your vids man

I think I’ve watched all of your videos. Every time I search for shou sugi ban you pop up. When you showed the difference in the wire brush and the Nyalox you showed the Nyalox side twice 🤣🤣🤣 My wire brush actually makes it look like yours did with the Nyalox bits. Definitely going to invest in the Nyalox bits though! Wire brush kills my hands 😂 You’re sense of humor is like mine. We’d have too much fun in a shop together 🤣🤣🤣 Love your show man, keep it up!

Sir I'm loving the channel and your hilarious little edits lol. Question though, I have a customer who wants a light burn. I've put on spar urethane, but decided that I want to look into polyurethane. Do you think it'll make much of a difference?

Do you ever fill in the textured surface with a clear filling (epoxy?) to keep the colors but maintain a smooth texture-less surface? I have a door that I have torched and want it to be smooth again and am curious if you have any suggestions for filling the surface while maintaining the burn patterns.. Also, (side note) I use an air compressor to blow off excess dust then do a light wipe with a damp cloth.

I haven't done that...exactly. I did something similar with my punisher table. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/nLlimadk0t-alnU.html I'd use Table Top epoxy from Total Boat. I've always had it stay crystal clear and it's self leveling. Just do a flood coat. Cheers!

Hey there never done this method before, plan on it very soon. But wonder cause I'm gonna be doing a bigger build to prolong the life of nyalox brushes I've purchased like the nylon bathroom brush you've got but more rounded brush that will attach to my drill. Have you tried other nylon drill attached brushes?? Big fan by the way your sunbleached Sugi ban is why I'm gloving up.

I have used some other brushes with varying success. I'd still say the Nyalox brushes are the best I've found as far as durability. Cheers!

Nice (and funny too :-D ) end to end demo! I have a curiosity: would it be possible to treat cork surfaces in a similar way? Like those cork rolls used to insulate floors or walls. It's a nice material but it somehow lacks character, since it's pretty uniform, and I wonder if a shou shugi ban-inspired treatment would make it more interesting. Do you think you could make a test?

I want to do burnt wood on my business sign that we are building. So two questions. After burning what is the best thing to use to clear coat it ? Second question if I do a light stain after I burn it do I need to do a clear coat over the stain? I know nothing about wood so have no clue what is the best clear to put on it

Can you char knotty pine car siding or similiar wood so it can be used for outdoor house siding with very little other maintenance or some sort of one time application of something. I have the 500,000btu torch already as 5 of my arborvitaes can attest)now trellises) and the old van my neighbor used to park by them.

Shou Sugi Ban is a technique that is used to waterproof and preserve wood. You'll need to use boiled linseed oil after you burn. Cheers

I'm looking at making a frame using this technique and grey stain. Would it be best to build the frame first, then use this technique? Or do this to the boards first, then cut and assemble the frame?

Hey, Jennifer! I've thought about this...and here's what I came up with. If you don't mind if the frame looks rustic (ie not completely straight around the picture) then build and then torch. If you want those clean lines, I would burn the wood, joint the edges (then lightly burn the clean edges) and then assemble. Cheers!

Can I use an oil based primer and then a latex paint on tongue & groove porch boards that are torched for a more historic look?

I've never really combined oil and latex, so not exactly sure. I'd do a test piece and see.

I’m a new subscriber just getting into this technique and have a question for you. If I’m building say a floating shelf with my corners 45 degrees and glued would I cut and assemble the shelf after the burn? Is assembling and then burning the way to go? I was nervous that with a heavy char I would open gaps in my corners if I assembled first. I love you videos brother. Keep them coming please!!!!

Hey Brady! Welcome to the Fray. If you're doing mitered corners, I would suggest cutting your stock a little long, burning and then cutting your 45s after the fact. You can always come in and give the edges a light torch to match the rest. Cheers

Have you tried old dog eared wood fencing? Gonna try burnin some and using unicorn spit. Any tips?

I've worked with cedar fencing in the past. Burnt up nice and good! Tips with wood burning: In my experience most folks don't burn deep enough initial. Burn the hell out of the wood. You can always back off if you don't like the results. And with Unicorn Spit, it's very versatile. You can use it as a stain or add water and use it as a dye. Cheers

quick question does the soft wood need to be plained and smooth first or just go at it naturally

If you're going for a deep burn just go to town. The fire will create a texture and the nylon brushes smooth it out. Cheers

Do you have any videos where you burned it all black. Not too much charged areas and left it. Didn’t scrape it off. Thinking about doing this and putting a matte polyurethane on it.

what kind of whiskey :) I liked the last puoypal look, but trying to get more of the first one natural look. Going to use on 1/4" T&G Knotty Cedar (Entablondo) for van ceiling so keeping as simple as possible. Saw video using a tangerine stain(or dye?)on pine giving a tigerish tone with the blacks really popping that I liked. What stain or dye would you advise for antural to honeyish look. Interior van is beige.?. I like the color of the shelf behind you Thanks for great tutorials. Should I use a nylon or wire wheel brush with the drill or by hand

Thanks, Paul! I think that was Bulliet Bourbon. The shelves behind me are pine with a surface burn, no finish. For the interior of a van I'd use a wood oil (something like Simple Finish by Maker Brand Co) to give it that warmth. If you want to dye it to change the color, look into Keda Wood Dyes (you can mix what ever color you want with them). And the you can hand brush or use the drill attachment. The drill attachment just saves so much time! Cheers!

Build Dad Build thanks for getting back to me. This is the cedar I bought from Depot- 1/4 in. x 3.5 in. x 96 in. Western Cedar Planks (6-Pack) - 14 sq. ft. It’s pretty smooth stock. zoom in for look at grain pattern to see how it would look doing a surface burn as with your shelves also with trying a light coat of that tangerine color you referenced in the video. But if using the stain if it would end up killing the cedar aroma

It is supposed to waterproof the wood. That being said, I usually do a topcoat anyway, even if it's just oil. Cheers

You can do a light burn. But deeper burns will burn through the face ply.

So I got a question I'm making a headboard for my bed and I'm going to sand the wood down to make it smooth then I want to burn it to make the wood grain pop and then I want to stain it with like a walnut color satin cuz I don't want a lot of shine after I burn it do I sand it or is it ready to stain once it's burned hope to hear from you soon thanks for any help in advance

I never sand after I brush. The nylon brush smoothed it out.

Can anybody advise me on how to get this result without a torch? Can I get the same result from using natural fire? My biggest concern with using natural fire is that it doesn't have a directional thrust, if that makes sense. You can direct a torch because of the gas pressure which you don't have with natural fire. Any tips?

Ok! You’re stuff in fantastic! I want to do this treatment on a big project-the railing around my pool deck. I live on a canal in Florida. Should I start with marine treated wood? Can that be safely burned? Or does burning and sealing serve the same purpose as marine treatment? Thank you for great content!

If you are referring to the timber which has a green appearance, it won't work. The chemicals used to treat the lumber turns ii into a "wooden brick". I use a few of them as a base when I burn. Use a good pine and follow up with a stain or water sealant.

When you removed the layer of burnt wood by using brushes and exposing the natural color of the wood, is this piece of wood still protected by the remaining layer of the charcoal? Could you still use it in the project outdoors and not be worried about contact with the elements? I am just a bit worried that if you remove too much of the charcoal and expose the original wood layer, that it is not protected by the burning process anymore as much as it would be if you have not brushed so much charcoal off of the wood.

In this application I'm not concerned about it being weather proof. However I have seen siding done the same way. Burned then brushed before installation. Cheers

Great video. You need a Mr.Shotty to help focus the camera so you get an awesome shot. Its just a strip of masking tape with a small face on it. Scott over on Vechor uses one he calls Mr. Spotty

Light surface burn. Too hot / deep will burn through the top layer of ply and can even cause the glue between plys to bubble. Cheers

The keeper of the snapper has demanded I make a headboard.thanx your advise is appreciated. Heard that bullit is gooood. Next on my list I'm on a Pendleton kick lately but I'm kinda fond of a canadian whiskey. Scotch bourbon, I guess most of them. Bullit rye is next. Two birds with one stone. Anyway this vid is 6 months old and you are so much more up summers coming Nick. Had a friend that suffered thru the winters he was a survivor of the war in Bosnia great guy . Winter took him he hung himself. He had no family you do so chin up. Winter bites blizzard tomorrow and - 42 windchill by sun. Think I might just stay in bed. Single digits for 7 days predicted. So burn baby burn :-)

@@BuildDadBuild yeh nice guy I was given the chance to instruct him as a truck driver became my friend he chose a local job and a year later pulled that stunt . I guess he was alone in a new country his 7th in his migration to freedom and the jehovah's got hold of him in his weakness and loss of his own faith he called it muslims killing muslims in turn his father shunned him and he couldn't celebrate Christian holidays due to his new faith I told him thanksgiving was a gathering of friends and family to give thanks for all our blessings and to share a meal together . His new faith didnt allow that. Wish it had I'm not a bible beater but his inability to adjust to life here alone killed him .thank you for listening. Sorry I know its heavy Zamier deserved better. Nuff to make a man drink at least that's my excuse tonite cheers nick I like folks with heart and you proved to me that you have heart. Keep up the good work . Larry.

Do you only use the grey 80 grit Nyalox brush or do you use the other grits as well?

I mainly use the 80 grit. Occasionally I use the orange...never the blue! LOL Cheers
