So here is my latest project, a build video for my Walnut Glasses box, with a unique take on the hinge using a piece of leather.
Its made from black walnut, 2oz leather, epoxy, beeswax, wood glue and a few bolts.
Please let me know what you think, and what you would do to improve the design.

I love this. I feel like a lot of the work I see on woodworking forums / videos / communities requires complicated and specialized tools to create perfect projects with no through lines, but your work here is just as perfect and far more achievable using a simple ban saw. And personally I think the bolts are actually a great finish for the leather, it would look odd without them. Though I might opt for gold or brass colored instead.

When floccing, you do not want to dump out any of the fibers until the adhesive glue has completely dried (usually overnight). After the adhesive has dried, you can dump out and reclaim any fibers that haven’t stuck to the adhesive. Also, you want to make sure you use more than enough fibers. If you feel like you’ve put on more than you need, add more. You can always reclaim it so it won’t be wasted. You also want to work rather quickly as the adhesive begins to dry fast.

Beautiful!! While I liked the flocking I am wondering if you think it is necessary now. Would you do it again? I also liked the screws holding the leather hinge and agree that a brass or gold color would match the tone of the wood. Brilliant project!!

Flocking yes, screws however not required at all. Just leather and glue is plenty

In fact, your work is very, very beautiful, but the speed of the video is high in important detail, and also the skin over time ruptures and with the water shrinking, you can make internal joints and work the skin in the outside cover in the form of a frame after I sculpted a place so that it remains hidden and you can add your logo Of gold-plated metal, will give a great impression, I am an Arab from Sudan and I liked what you did, better progress

really smart and minimalist, can you make a bigger version of this box, also I wanna know about the leather type you used, is it a natural or synthetic, good job after all
@StuffIMade

Taki Clinton Harness yes you make bigger boxes with leather hinge like this. The leather is real leather from a local tannery

I think you want more flocking glue, you seem to have brushed it out too much which has left the ridges. Also, don't be afraid of putting plenty of the fibers in there and just leave it, any that are not needed will not stick and can be re-used. I use Suede Tex from Turners Retreat and the instructions suggest leaving it for at least 48 hours before tipping out the loose fibers which gives the glue time to cure properly.

Hola! ¿Que material es usado en interior de la caja? Gracias :0)
@StuffIMade
@StuffIMade 6 жыл бұрын
Jeff Nos the material is called 'flocking fibres' you also need a glue of the same colour as the flocking fibres

I saw the flocking "system" a few times on You Tube. Now I understand more or less how it works. Never saw a "flocking gun" though. But: why is it necessary to have the glue the same colour as the flocking fibres? Is it not possible to buy transparent glue and use that for all colours of flocking fibres?
@StuffIMade
@StuffIMade 6 жыл бұрын
The flicking gun applies static electricity to the fibres as well as firing them into the glue they then stand up mor in the glue. The coloured glue ensures that there is no patches that look thinner of fibres and helps with the quality of the final look.

@samdeweerdt
@samdeweerdt 7 жыл бұрын
Wait, aren't you supposed to use some sort of "flocking gun" so that the fibers are electrostatically attracted to the glued-in surface. That's what makes them stand up straight in the glue. I'm not sure but I think I see you just powder the fibers on the glue, that won't give the desired effect... Nice video!
