Tips for future privacy fence builds --- 1) don't have more than 6" of picket above your top rail 2) don't have more than 6" of picket below your bottom rail 3) Split the difference between your top and bottom rail to place your middle rail. /// Run your pickets from right to left to reduce crossing your body if your right handed with the nailer /// Before pouring your concrete in your hole pre-soak it with water and pour and water in layers then use a digging bar or rebar or something to mix the concrete in the hole and remove the air voids in the concrete so it cures more consistantly thus is stronger and cures faster actually. /// before setting your post mark your ground line on your post typically 66" with no rot board or 72" if you are using a rot board then you can set your post to the ground line (* you may still eyeball and adjust your post heights as needed) /// If for some crazy reason you need to space your fence post more than 8 ft apart use a diaginal 2x4 brace from the center of your toprail to the bottom of your post on each side like --> |/\| this will support your horizontal rails from sagging by moving the load to the post on either side./// Follow these guidelines and you should end up with a better end-result /// PS always use hot-dipped galvanized ring shank nails or stainless steel screws. 3 - 3. 5 inch for your framing and 1.75 to 2 inches to attach your pickets. /// good job just advice for upcoming projects to think about.

As another commenter said you are supposed to put the top & bottom horizontal 2 X 4's 6 inches from the top & bottom so the dog ears won't warp

Very nicely done Rugged DIY!! Fencing looks amazing and you’re good at what you do and your passion shows. Question: Is there a a certain amount of quickrete you use to fill the hole or do you completely fill the hole up to ground level and not worry about replacing dirt that you removed to cover over the cement? Keep doing your videos. They’re well done.💪🏿
@ruggeddiy61804 жыл бұрын
Raymon, thanks for your comments! The amount of quickrete you need to fill the hole would depend on how big you make the hole. You want to fill the hole to ground level to prevent moisture build-up around the wood. I just spread the excess dirt around to fill in low areas near the fence.

RUGGED DIY ok. I see. Thanks for your responses to video. I appreciate it!!

@@bowtechlover1 something, imo, to do additionally...place larger gravel in the bottom of the hole (to assist drainage), then fill to ground level with the 'quick crete' and DO water... also, it's good for a better, more uniform set to use a scrap piece of wood and push or 'tap' down the cement around the post. This is result in a better, long lasting set with the cement 'curing' at the same time for the entire depth of the mix.

Do. you remember how many inches at the top and bottom on the horizontal 2x4 ?
@stayinalivemedical7902 жыл бұрын
There are many resources that say the hole should be 3-4 times the diameter of the post. I'm getting ready to rebuild mine so I wanted to confirm that that really needs to be done. Thoughts?

Howd you keep the post level when pouring in the concrete? Or did you re-level it after you poured?
@ruggeddiy61802 жыл бұрын
Jordan B, I used a post level. It has two levels on two sides of the post that help you keep the post straight.

right pour the concrete first then level man

Maybe I missed the part as to how deep the hole has to be?.......30 in at least?, and what kind of post did you use.....4x4x6?
@ruggeddiy61802 жыл бұрын
Carapungo, I set the posts about 2 feet deep. They were 4"x4"x8' posts. Thanks, Steve
@Calaxt012 жыл бұрын
@carapungo, I realize this may be six months late but you need to check how deep your local frost lines go and get it under that or else the frost can heave the post out of the ground.

Rugged DIY, you mentioned this video was taken in Maryland. I also live in Maryland and need to put up a fence in my backyard. How much would you charge to put up the fence? Thank you.
@ruggeddiy61802 жыл бұрын
Samuel Min, I appreciate the request. I'm just a DIY'er. I only work on my own home. I would encourage you to try to do it. Fencing is pretty easy once you measure and create your square space.

Great video.. are there any videos showing how to make the corner of the fence layout ? I assume you place the ends at half way onto corner post but wasn't sure. My first time planning a fence.
@ruggeddiy61802 жыл бұрын
Sam, I didn't put the corner in a video. When you are planning the corner you want to follow the 3, 4, 5 rule. Do a google search and you will find it. I think the Home Renovision channel shows how to build a corner. It's a great channel. I learned a lot from him. Thanks, Steve

las medidas del poste y la profundidad que hay que introducir el poste ...please ...y too las distancias de un poste a otro...
@ruggeddiy61802 жыл бұрын
Eduardo Gutierrez, Por lo general, un poste debe colocarse a 2 pies en el suelo y cada poste debe tener 8 pies en el centro. Tuve que espaciar algunos de los postes más de 8 pies debido a raíces u otros problemas.

big mistake to pour cement around posts. Just above the cement is exactly where the post will rot through, because the cement will keep water from percolating to subsoil blow the post. Posts will do fine without cement poured around them, and will be easier to straighten if posts get out of line over time. Cement around posts makes that much more difficult, and when the life of fence is done, it will be a PITA to dig out those posts lugged down with cement and maybe the posts are rotted above the cement plug that will still need to be dug out if post breaks off.
@ruggeddiy61802 жыл бұрын
Rocky Fjord, most of the posts I pulled out of the ground during this fix weren't placed in concrete. They rotted and broke below the surface. Whether to add concrete or not is a matter of opinion. Sure, you can try to relevel a post that isn't in concrete, but you also have serious issues with the fence falling when it isn't properly anchored. I have posts on the opposite side of the yard that are over 20 years old which were placed in concrete by the previous owner and they are still as strong as ever. The posts I removed in this video that were rotten were installed less than 10 years before removal.
@rockyfjord37532 жыл бұрын
@@ruggeddiy6180 Well there are variable factors, like what kind of post is being used. Red cedar aka juniper is the best. Maybe if the concrete around post is poured to ground level or above and troweled away from post so water can run off. I inherited board fence in florida where cement was poured around post but below grade and when winds came, the fence went down, and every post broke where rotted just above the concrete plug. And these were treated posts. Everyone else around here says the same thing, has had the same experience. So your experience is different. The question then is not entirely resolved; must be some variable factor.

Why would people build fences this way? The 2x4s should go in between the 4x4s... why take up extra 2 inches or so of your property? It just seems very lazy. Rails go in between posts.

Brendan Collins, Unfortunately I am beholden to the rules of an HOA. I had to rebuild the fence to match my neighbors existing fencing.
