About:
Jason and Lorraine. In 2016 we sold most of our belongings and left the city in southern California to start a small homestead in the mountains of North Carolina. We left the city in search for a more minimal and intentional life. We became passionate about growing our own food and knowing what exactly is in our food after I (Jason) became diagnosed with cancer. Now 8 years in remission we as a family are on a journey to live our passions.
We document our life on KZfaq videos to inspire others to get out of their comfort zone and not be afraid of change. We started our own online general store where we have available the things we make and use in real life. Thank you for following us on this incredible life changing journey!

Be careful about inserting the stove pipe going upward, into the next section. That way, creosote leaks backward thru the joint, and drips into your home. Always install stove pipe inserting the top section into the lower section. That way the creosote will drip backward into the inside of the pipe, and be self-contained. I learned this the hard way!

Wood heat is the bomb! In our former home in the mountains of NC, not far from where you live, we had a 5' long huge woodstove for backup in our 3 story 3500 sq. ft. home, at our blueberry farm. On Christmas Eve 2000 it began to snow and eventually we became without power. Thank good news for our huge woodstove. We fired her up and cooked on and heated our home for 4 days till the power came back on. It was so cozy and warm to use the woodstove. I love wood heaters.😊🌲🌲🌲

Just used your video as a guide while installing my first brand new wood stove in my very first home as a homeowner. It’s a single wide mobile home as well and I can’t thank you enough for giving me the inspiration to believe I could do it all myself... Using only your video and one other like it as install references, and videos from northline express for the parts, and a few videos from other people all over the world on how to properly use it and all I need to know about wood... I just had a very successful, and safe first fire in it! I just wanted to express my gratitude to you for making this, (and all of your other videos I have watched now) and let you know how much of a positive impact you are having on more people than you even know. I thank you and a couple other people personally and would shake your hand if I ever had the opportunity to. I’m going to enjoy many cold snowy nights now in my warm home thanks in big part to people like you. Thank you from my family to yours! -Jason, Erin, Ryder🐶, and now our newest addition to our family come April of ‘21! - from Colorado 🏡 🏔 🔥 🙌🏽😁

When you put the flashing under the shingles you need to go up as many layers as possible never put silicone under the flashing that goes towards the endge of the roof. That can creat a dam if water does get under it cut your shingles to fit around pipe and use silicone under the shingles you lifted up and remove any loose nailes or staples that may have come loose. In your climate you dont worry about alot of snow but further north the ice will back up on tje roof and if everything isnt hunky dory it will get up under the shingles get warm and leak

Thank you for what you shared... And so glad that it's working better for you now. I had to learn all about a wood stove in my early adult life also. It's sure a wonderful way to heat a home .. so cozy and also nice to warm up next to, and have for cooking! Thank you, Jason and Lorraine... and it's great to see Penelope enjoying the wood heat and reading. Many blessings to you all!😊🔥📖💓

congrats for leaving California and building your own life on your own terms..I am right behind you...I'm deciding between this stove and the cubic mini grizzly as my place is under 400 sq feet..And my "normal " wood stove will be way too much for the little place even with sub zero temps from what I hear..

We installed ours using your video! Only problem was we built tile hearth (floor, back and sides) prior to checking to see where studs were. Pain in the butt! Had to cut THROUGH studs and build c braces. Check where your studs are FIRST before you do anything. Otherwise, your video took us through complete install! We had some issues with ordering parts and knowing what we needed but ordered Duravent double wall system from Northline Express. Their sales rep helped us with parts and adapters plus they have a KZfaq channel that has plenty of videos that describe piecing together the stovepipe pieces. Thank you for great instructional video that walked us through each step!

Very nice. We have a zero clearance fireplace that is absolutely useless to us. You can build a fire in it but it's essentially colder in the home because our heat goes up the chimney will burning. Maybe with your video I can convince my wife to make a change. We are also in a mobile home. I'm sure if you are in Western NC then you are enjoying your wood stove on a snowy day today!

Great tutorial video. To get a longer wood burn, I suggest you install a damper in the exhaust flue out the top of the stove. This will slow the burn. Useful at night so you dont have to get up and feed the fire. The woodstove will develop a personality and from our family experience we named it "Smokey". After fire is out, closing the damper will prevent a downdraft of cold air dumping ash, smokey smells and a cold draft into the room. Having said that, enjoy. Your family has a new member!!!

Excellent job and video. You need a poker to move the coals and wood. I get free wood off Craigslist and Facebook and how noticing where utility companies trim under power lines. They leave wood. I have a rechargeable battery chainsaw that has been going strong for 3 years. But the chain needs sharpened -another skill. Splitting wood is a workout that is actually enjoyable. My grandpa 🧔🏼taught me how to split wood and use a couple of wedges if need be.

Great video. Was considering doing this in our off grid cabin but honestly after seeing it I think I'd rather spend $1500 in more solar and batteries to run an electric one. I think you did an awesome job but I'm more comfortable with electricity than live fires (especially for renters). Thanks for the insight!

I think it's great that you guys are DIY and not afraid to tackle new jobs. I'm confused about the heat though, if it's not heating up the shelf or anything around it, how is it heating the house? From our past experiences wood stoves should really heat things up. My only critique, stop using drywall screws for everything! And keep an eye on that roof. Water leaks are a mobile home's worst enemy. All in all, good job and excellent learning experience. We look forward to installing one of our own someday.

I have the same wood stove. The sides really don't heat up much at all, when compared to the single wall pipe a foot above the stove itself. The same goes for the area behind the stove as he demonstrated. It really backs up the manual's indications of clearance to combustibles, which is as close as 10' with single wall stove pipe, and 8' if using double wall. Hard to believe until you actually experience it ( was about to waste a weekend installing a heat shield ).But the thing provides a surprisingly large amount of heat, compared to an old Efel Kamina I'm used to.

Nice install, pretty much by the book with exception to the sheet rock screws holding the support box, don't sweat the silicone job, if that area on the shingles or class a chimney gets hot enough to affect the regular silicone then you have bigger issues to deal with. The Englander 17vl is a small but proven work horse, its a convective heater, meaning it will heat the air through those vent holes and then send the heated air into the room, the blower running on low will help a ton, plus you have radiant heat through the large glass. Wood moisture is the key with any new epa approved stove, buy a cheap moisture meter and test your splits, you want wood to be
