Very nice and very achievable indeed. Perhaps a few extra tips for fellow bonsaï enthusiasts: these yews (taxus baccata I presume) prefer a somewhat shady spot and they really grow better when not exposed too much to strong summer afternoon sun. They will even accept permanently full shade! Also they have relatively "thick" roots which contain a lot of water. Planted in a relatively small pot and exposed to harsh freezing conditions, these roots may burst because of the water in them. Do not keep them too whet, especially not during the winter. But they are quite ideal for bonsaï and tend to make new buds very, very easily. Beware: yews are quite toxic in all parts! Perhaps interesting to know: in earlier ages, the famous english "longbows" were made from this wood...

How can I tell if my new plant is a yew or a bald cypress? I got a young pre bonsai at a local nursery that wasn't labeled
@vinny184
@vinny184 Жыл бұрын
Yew has much stiffer foliage, grows more slowly, is less apically dominant (focuses growth on branches instead of just a trunk growing up, up, up.) and is evergreen in cold climates. Bald cypress is deciduous in non-tropical climates, semi-evergreen in subtropical climates and evergreen in the tropics.
