Diyaluma Waterfalls (and Lipton's Seat, Haputale) - Best Day Trip from Ella, Sri Lanka!

We spent 2 weeks travelling around the ‘Pearl of the Indian Ocean’, Sri Lanka! There is so much to discover on this tropical island, full of dreamy beaches, cultural treasures, scenic mountains, fun train rides, surprising safaris and sumptuous food. In this video, we discover the soaring views of Lipton’s Seat in Haputale, overlooking the Dambatenne Tea Plantation, as well as having a splash-tastic time in the Diyaluma Waterfalls.
Our experience at Diyaluma Waterfalls was completely unexpected, unplanned and ever so delightful! In fact, if you were to ask me what day I had the most fun on our journey in Sri Lanka, this would be it! I felt so carefree and happy and we were surrounded by extreme natural beauty. Diyaluma has sequential rock pools which visitors can swim in… an experience not to be missed in Sri Lanka! Just an hour drive from Ella, it makes the perfect day trip.
If you’re visiting this beautiful country, I hope this provides some inspiration and I’d highly recommend these activities on a day trip from Ella!

If you are heading to Ella, you should explore the underground cave system and the Nil Diya Pokuna (loosely translated "Blue Water Pond")...it's an adventure of its own....!!!

It was Brits who introduced tea to then Ceylon. Brits were relying on Chinese tea and there was a balance of payment issue in favour of the Chinese. Opium wars started due to Chinese tea. To break the Chinese monopoly on tea, Brits smuggled Chinese tea plant and subsequently the process of tea making to Ceylon, and that is the birth of Ceylon tea. This is the shortest version.

Hi Wayne! Thanks so much for the message and encouragement. I think you will both have a wonderful time there. We visited Diyaluma Falls in February and our guide was Suranga, on +940702459692. He was at the shop I referenced in the video, at the base of the falls. If you have a private driver, they will likely take you there. If not, it's not hard to miss as there's not much else in the surrounding area. Hope this helps and hope you guys have a wonderful trip!

Hi Ana! I’m so pleased they could help! I hope you have a wonderful time!! There are multiple waterfalls at Diyaluma and there are definitely child friendly pools to swim in. Some of the pools on the very edge of the cliff I would not recommend for children but there are many other options to choose from. The hike there for us was in warm weather so we were quite ready for a swim by the time we arrived. The water is cool but not freezing cold. I hope this helps! 😃

Hi! Of course! The person we liaised with was called Ameen from Sheema Travels. However on a Google Search it came up as 'Taxi Ceylon'. The number was +94768109510. He is wonderful and very responsive and arranged our driver for us. Our driver was incredibly reliable and was called Mr Ajantha Herath. His number is +94777829380. The prices vary so much depending on which car you choose and whether you have the driver every day and how far you drive. If you contact Ameen he will give you a very good rate. We wanted to have the same driver for our entire trip. In general, the quotes we received for 2 weeks were $400-450 (2 weeks) for a small car or $550 - $650 for a larger car (Prius or similar). We only needed the car and driver for 10 days as we stayed at Bentota Resort relaxing for the last few days. Hope this helps!
