Dirty filter is usually the first problem!! Not the last one... I always get a good look inside the blower, too. Those can be pretty nasty on older furnaces.

Because of suggestions like this I bought all these parts and even AC capacitors a few years ago. I have two furnaces and AC systems (matching units, one for the first floor and one for the second floor) Same parts for each. I suggest you all take Dave’s advice here and buy these parts now. After checking the parts I bagged and boxed them up and put in the garage next to the furnace + wrote all over the box. I’m set.

I was in a bind 1 night with a bad igniter so I was able to manually light my furnace with a grill lighter. Essentially I had to do it manually when the temperature would really drop inside the house. It was better than not having no heat. Even though it was a nuisance to keep doing it it was good in the emergency.

Thanks for your informational channel. It made me interested in providing backup power in the chance of a power outage. I went down the rabbit hole ,after considering a power cube and with that came recharging the cube and hooking it up but I wanted automatic so I looked at a TRI fuel portable generator because I wanted to use NG but none had a THD compatible with my 93 plus furnace. So I tried to get a 7.5 Generac but after ordering it the delivery date changed later and later. I found they had a 10k with 16 breaker auto switch and ended up going with that. After first thinking I could do this on the cheap with a battery/power cube it snowballed quite spectacularly . After Unit ,underground gas line ,electrical conduit, cement pad, All new Siemens breakers with 8 arc fault, 3/3 cable lets not forget permits and taxes, with me doing all the work it was still 6 times my original estimate of a nice power cube. No regrets it is wifi controlled so I know it is there and ready. I figured I did save money by servicing my furnace Trane XL 93 plus with help of your video. So Thanks

Because of Covid, supply issues & getting jacked once by a HVAC guy I have since accumulated a box of spare parts. I now have every part listed on the parts list except the heat exchanger. ($$). Total cost for this insurance was roughly $500. Made that back already by fixing neighbor's furnance.

Great video as always. Lots of people asking for the link to the hot surface igniter. It's the first link in the description. I'd like a link for replacement flame sensors please. Mine went bad a few years ago. I tried cleaning it with some fine sandpaper but nothing doing. I live in Canada and we have coins for $1 and $2 denominations instead of bills and all our bills are polymer (plastic) now so we can't even use those! I got lucky and found a good flame sensor in a furnace that was going for scrap and it's still going but I'd like to have a spare one handy for next time!

I'm retired from the business now. When I got my new furnace 20 years ago I bought a spare control board and ignitor. Besides having one die on a holiday I worried about a part being obsolete and hard to get in the future.

Can you do a video on testing ventilation air flow issues wrt filter grades, dusty ductwork, closed vents, return air, things to help increase airflow if necessary maybe compared to cfm and BTU (always oversized!!!). Is there a way to relate BTU (or metric) to Rja of a house? I recently showed during a furnace outage that I only need 3000W continuous to keep 10 C above outside air temp 24/7. So do I really only need 12K BTU for my house in typical conditions? They installed a total of 7 tons (12k×7) of heating and cooling here. It cycles a lot! I have a solution to reduce AC bill, 90% of heat comes via brown AL roof on master BR,south facing. Solar with an air gap!

Mine outside gas pack(Trane package unit) died on me yesterday. And yep right at the beginning of a severe cold snap. My son, who's in the business, talked me through a few things. Inducer motor kicks on followed shortly by burners(2) lighting off. They burn for around 10 seconds then shut off followed by the same sequence over and over. Blower is working. I pulled the flame sensor and cleaned it using emory cloth but didn't fix the issue. Now I'm wondering if I either didn't clean it well enough or it has failed? Since it's a package unit sitting outside on sub 10 degree weather and now snow on the ground.....UGGGGGGG!

I have a problem similar to the short cycling of the furnace but it doesn't happen all the time( randomly after so many complete cycles). I've cleaned the flame sensor and still the same issue. Should I just replace the flame sensor?

Hi Dave. Great video. I have an unrelated question that has nothing to to do with emergency power for a furnace. Over the Christmas break my wife wanted me to replace our existing Thermostat with a Nest. My furnace is similar to the one in this video. I looked at the thermostats and saw they were single stage. My furnace is 96% and two stage. I did find one Nest that could accommodate two stages by attaching the second stage to the OB contact and I guess program it do that function. That seemed a little above my knowledge and I was afraid I might screw up the furnace which is working great. I took to the internet for information and support and got the idea that most furnace technicians do not recommend using the nest and that they don't work well and if I got it working it could cause damage to something on my furnace down the line. I got confused and did nothing. The only reason I was considering a new thermostat is the fact we could use an app on our phone and the fact the display is hard to read on the one we have now. We have an Emmerson Big Blue and the display is illuminated but very dim and difficult to see. It has been like this from the start. If the display was brighter I wouldn't even change it. They seems no way to make it brighter. As is stated I love the furnace and the thermostat works great. I would appreciate your thoughts on this. Your the only friend I know in the business. PS I'm all set up for a power failure, foam cleaned my air conditioner and bought that multi socket driver because of you. The drive works great and takes up way less space in my pouch. Thank You

Hi we are in need of replacing a 28 year old furnace for a 1996 Bi Level total sq ft 2500 we are seniors on a so called fixed income so payments would be prefered a furnace guy by us recommended a Weatherking 70,000 BTU single stage furnace what we need to know is are they reliable and a good brand ? what brand would you recommend and size we live in Vulcan Alberta Canada we also have already a 3-4 year old Air conditioner this is an investment for us so we want best bang for the buck so to speak but very reliable thank you so much and we look forward to your response cheers

I just bought a newly built house. My thermostat is driving me crazy. I turn the heat off to save money but there are only two fan setting: On and auto, so the fan continues to run with cold air and does not shut off because there is no option to do this. Would a different model of thermostat fix this?

The solution for any and every furnace issue is the same, rip it out and replace it with a heat pump, ideally a geothermal heatpump. What idiot would use a furnace when they could have a heat pump? Obviously renters are excluded but at that point the repair isn't even on you.
