Another great shop air hack I learned working at a shop w a boss who thought our side of the business was a waste of his time (although all the money came from the shop, but that's the art business). Our main gig was custom crating, all we had was a hotdog compressor and a few air tools (stapler, drill, etc..). First thing I did was remedy the air situation. A new compressor was out of the question but I could work the old one to death (he was that guy). I bought 4 - 4"x10' PVC pipes (heavy walled) and set them up as surge tanks around the shop. 4 pipes got us about 20 gallons of extra air and that god damned compressor was still alive when I left after about 4 years. Made lots of improvements to the shop, beat every production deadline for 3 years in a row. I was proud of the shop and the team I put together was sad to see the boss drive it straight into the ground.

Just a heads up but the 6mm hex head has a thread locker of some sort. *Empty tank*. I used damp washcloth or rag(NOT WET OR DRIPPING) and a piece of foil to cover all area except the bolt then using a pocket sized torch with a very small flame heated it up. Didnt get super hot but just enough to be overly warm and kept it that way with short heat blasts for about 1- 2 mins. 6mm brought it out with ease. Be careful tho cus lots of things can melt that you would rather stay solid. Good luck.

I found your video when I bought the same compressor, and had the same issue, except it dropped the pressure to 0. after buying a new regulator I ended up with the same problem, I changed out the line from the pressure switch to the regulator. Now using a blow gun the pressure doesn't fluctuate at all and I am using the original regulator that came with the compressor. The supply line was almost completely plugged off.

Great upgrade. You may already know this, but I was taught to apply sealant tape from the roll differently by a pipe fitter. I hold the fitting in my left hand with the threads facing right and wrap the tape feeding from the bottom of the roll (using my right hand) in the direction that the female fitting will screw on. You can tension the tape with your right hand directly with the center of the roll of tape by holding the end with your left thumb for at least the first wrap. Also works with all rolls of adhesive tapes when wrapping electrical tape around wires, or wrapping shafts and it helps keep the wraps tight. Try it sometimes. It has been a long time since I took fluid dynamics, but I'm pretty sure that your pressure drop has more to do with gas pressure laws that say that there is a corresponding pressure drop across any restriction if the speed increases through the restriction. If you want a true operating pressure at the tool, adjust the regulator to the desired pressure while the tool is in use. And look for regulators (and valves/fittings) rated as full flow (most have a rating known as a flow coefficient where the higher number means less pressure drop when flowing).

For future reference to anyone reading: don't replace any stock part with only a single high-flow part; the whole stock air flow is restricted--regulator, tube, and fittings all. This is what I gathered from other comments in different videos that tried to switch out different parts of the stock air flow. This goes for the same modification add-on: all parts of it needs to be high-flow. Someone else did this same modification but with high-flow fittings and got a 10 psi drop, compared to a 20 psi drop in this video.

I personally would have gone with stainless fittings because of their corrosion resistance, but i appreciate your work 👍

Generally the pressure set while the tool is operating, otherwise it's just static pressure. The length and diameter of the air line will have an effect. Try connecting the air wrench to the regulator with a 3' section of 3/8" air line (available at Horror Fright for about $8). I think you'll find the regulator will reflect a different drop. I know that my plasma cutter says the pressure must be set while the air solenoid is open.

Very useful video. I want to soda blast furniture and need a dehumidifier. I think this regulator gizmo might do it. It seems to have a dehumidifier attachment. This looks like a big enough tank to try out some blasting on a small scale. Thank you for the insights. Please do not add ANY music to ANY videos. You will get lots of views if you do not.

I think that yellow coiled hose is too thin to run a 1/2" impact... that might be part of the problem? I wonder what a different regulator would do. I enjoyed the video.

How's she goin'? This as a nice add to your compressor Martin. Too bad about the trouble you had getting the expansion port plug out though!! It's been my experience that when I set the regulator it always drops when the tool is started. If I need the pressure to be, say 90PSI, I'll set that with the tool operating. Anyways, I like the way you set up your compressor now. Take care!!!

Before replacing that stock regulator (which is garbage) I would start w ur supply line to the tool. Nothing is worse than thoes coil hoses. In my old shop I had a main line that ran around the shop. I bolted a large fire extinguisher to the leg of our workbench I put a T on the extinguisher a couple quick connects later I had a 5 gallon surge tank and an 8 foot hose that gave me full on demand pressure and not having 50' of hose laying all over shop for someone to trip over.

If you take one of those stock plugs from the kobalt regulator. You'd increase psi. I rather connect a new regulator. A small one

I think I found the solution to your problem: you need high-flow fittings. You need the high-flow male and female fittings on the tool and the regulator. Someone already did this modification on the same compressor 3 years ago and he only had a 10psi drop. What would happen if you set pressures at 100 so operating pressure would be more in spec?

My OEM Regulator is leaking, anyway to bypass it or block it & just add your port?
