That is an incredible point! No one talks about what it takes to remove peel and stick wall paper or vinyl flooring or how long it can last or stay up if used in other ways. I didn't even consider thickness as a factor in addition to the adhesive. Thank you so much for sharing your experience - really appreciate it!

I use it to line the insides of my dressers so my clothes don't snag on wood and for a fun pop of color. It is super hard to remove if it's been in place for a long time. I can't imagine how much work cleaning adhesive off an entire wall(s) would be😐

I just removed 3 layers of peel-and-stick vinyl tiles. I've done quite a bit of work myself in my home and this was one of the WORST jobs I ever did. Even after I finally got them all up with the help of a heat gun, there is a very thick layer of extremely sticky glue left. I own my home so was able to let it dry and get ceramic tile installed, but no way are the vinyl tiles renter-friendly.

I should have asked about that in my last apartment! It was in sorry shape when I got it. My father and I sanded and bleached the floors, put in a backsplash and installed ceramic tiles on the kitchen floor, painted, fixed all the cracks and holes in the walls and floors, replaced the cabinets, even soundproofed a wall and replaced the broken toilet. That apartment got quite an upgrade because of me, and we should've been paid for that labor when I moved out. Didn't even occur to me. Whoever got that place after me really lucked out.

Years ago we bought a house where someone previously had used those peel and stick carpet tiles in the living and dinning rooms. Then someone later had tried to remove it. We were stuck with two rooms with patchwork effect of tiles across part of each room, some clean hardwood flooring in areas and some floor covered in black goop from the glue residue. We were struggling with getting the mess up until by accident we found something that got the goop up fairly easier. One of our dogs had an accident and we used a cheap pet urine cleaner from a dollar store for the accident and noted that it loosened up the glue residue as well - better than the Goop Be Gone we were trying to use.

As a renter, you have to be careful about which peel and stick you use. 'Get permission' is always the best way to go about things. There is an easy stick shelf liner that DOES peel off with out any issues. It is for cabinet shelves, but I used on an old, beat up microwave cart (sides as well as shelves) and it works fine. But - I don't have kids so it isn't getting banged about. Peel and stick tiles can be wonderful if you take your time and install it correctly. It can be cheaper or it can be very expensive. But it isn't coming up easy peesey. It isn't really 'renter friendly'.
@lisaaopignatelli

Put down rosin paper to cover the floor then the peel and stick tile for renter. Use double dided tape on the paper to the floor. Never grout in a rental. Contact paper is an option for a temp backslash and its cheaper than p&s backslash tiles. Still always get permission for any decor in a rental. If changing light fixtures , always save the originals as they are permanent, unless you leave the new. I've done this with light fixtures and shower heads , faucets, cabinet hardware . I've even done wall to wall carpet with double sided tape. As long as you have the original permanent fixtures to put back ? You can take all of your fixtures with you. You can even change out the light switch plates. Always put back to original state upon moving unless you and your landlord have made another agreement. My sister in law put in new fixtures when the old ones were all beat up. She tried to take them with her and was faced with losing her security since she threw away the old ones. Her original landlord know bit he sold the property and the new landlord had no such agreement with her. In cases like that you should always get it in writing or as an amendment to the lease agreement.

If there is any texture to the area, like a sheetrock wall with multiple layers of paint, contact paper doesn't stick. I think that's why the peel and stick has gotten so popular. It just sucks that it might take paint off with it.

Don't forget the fumes that peelable wallpaper, flooring etc can give off and not ideal for small rooms for infants, children, animals such as birds that could be sensitive, or if you have respiratory issues or allergies. Adequate ventilation is needed to vent these fumes. The fumes come from the adhesives and plastic properties of the product. Also, to remove products a hairdryer on low may help soften the adhesive on sticky backed plastic. Wear a suitable respirator if using this method

Lots of experience here, get permission! Peel and stick put on correctly is next to permanent and can be harder to remove than simply cutting out the floor/wall and replacing it. It’s not easy to remove like say, wallpaper. It could cost you and your landlord big bucks to take out. Not renter friendly.

Yes, command hooks may NOT be renter-friendly, especially if the drywall is not well done. It’ll easily rip off drywall if something falls off and pulls the hook/strip with it. If your home has a lot of humidity, the command hook loses its effectiveness, and it falls off the wall, sometimes pulling drywall off the wall. You’re better off using a regular hook with a nail. It’s sturdier, and it’s easier to fix at moveout with a tiny hole versus ripped off drywall.

On walls where we used a plastic texture paint we would often use a cheap peel able paper wall vinyl (wallpaper) first . That way when you want to remove the surface product it came off easy leaving the paper backing . I wonder if this would be a thing . I also helps with the porosity of the wall allowing the product to stick evenly. The wall would have to be prepared and sealed well prior to hanging the wallpaper otherwise this could cause an issue . This might be worth a trying on a wall panel to see if it works . Just a thought

I used nice peel and stick with grout to cover over my ugly 80's bathroom vinyl. It was cheap, easy, and quick. Best of all it's more durable than the builders grade original flooring and it looks great!
@latoyaamb3r
@latoyaamb3r Жыл бұрын
So you don’t have to take up the vinyl flooring? You put the peel and stick over it?
@flaggov6949
@flaggov6949 Жыл бұрын
@@latoyaamb3r That depends on a number of things. Is the vinyl floor the original layer? It's possible that the vinyl you see is already a second layer. I probably wouldn't add a third. I'd remove both layers, so the peel-n-stick can be the first. Some old cheap vinyl was very soft, almost cushiony. I wouldn't use grout over that because there could be enough movement when people step hard for the grout to crack. What condition is the previous vinyl in? If there are holes or the vinyl isn't adhering well anymore, it may be better to remove the old vinyl. In my case, there was one edge under the counter about 1. 5" by 15" that was curling up. My peel-n-stick was the same thickness as the old vinyl, so I used a straight edge to cut out a 2 x 17 inch wide rectangle from the old vinyl where it curled. I made sure that none of the old edges needed reglued and cut a matching strip from a peel-n-stick tile to fill the hole. It looked silly, but since it was the same thickness it filled the hole to the same height. I gave a day or two to make sure the strip stuck well, and then I used peel-n-stick over the whole floor including the patch. I also removed the toilet so the tiles could go under which will make it easy to remove the toilet if I ever need to in the future. I did not caulk the toilet--if there's ever a problem with the wax ring, I want to see the water (rather than force the water under the tile or subfloor), so I can repair the problem. I used caulk around the tub and under the cabinet toe kick, so water can't leak under the tiles. It looked fantastic and was really easy. One tip, peel-n-stick tile is difficult to remove, so lay out all the tiles ahead, so you can make sure repeating patterns match (if it has a geometric pattern) or don't match (if it's supposed to look natural like stone).

Yooo, thank you guys for the video! I am poor, so i am always on the lookout for affordable ways to possibly update my trailer home. There are so many glory story success videos out there, but few that actually talk about the downfalls and or challenges. For myself, its not the spending money that scares me, its spending money on bogus things that scares me. I dont have the privilege to make mistakes. Thank You Guys: For your knowledge and tips. You all are a beautiful couple! I own my house, but need to save up for a massive update to my 1979 townhouse. I'm using peel and stick for a tempory fresh look and to experiment with potential styles before dropping the big bucks. I already did a kitchen wall with peel and stick, which aside from a few touch ups with super glue, it's been strong. It's installed over the stove so I expected the heat to effect the adhesive. Doing the floor next with traffic master, but considering not using grout so that it will be easier to remove later. Does it look weird without grout?
@DIYPowerCouple

Hi Coach! It really is a preference to grout or not. Peel and stick planks and intricate designs are examples where you can place the tiles right next to each other without grouting. Do a dry layout before sticking to see if you like the look. 😀

One thing with peel and stick backsplashes is that the front of the tiles warps and separates from the backing after a while. As much as I love mine, I will be taking it down and installing ceramic subway tile, which is inexpensive and DIY friendly. If you're renting, just ask your landlord if they mind you installing simple white ceramic tile. Chances are they'll be thrilled for the free upgrade.

It’s very expensive to buy your own home (down payment, closing costs, insurance, etc.) maybe they can’t afford to buy and don’t mind spending a little to have a better looking rental. Occasionally you can find a landlord that will allow you to deduct the cost of materials from your rent. That way you’re only out your labor. Before my husband and I bought our first home we had a very sweet landlady who allowed us to deduct any necessary repairs from the rent. She was an elderly lady and was glad to do this as she only paid for supplies and my husband did the labor.

A tip that doesn't relate to peel and stick, but it does for rentals. If you have white walls and hung any paintings that you will take with you when you move fill the nail holes with white toothpaste and let it dry. It fills holes completely and you'll get your deposit back. Make sure you take photos of your apartment so you have proof of any damage that's already there when you moved in. The photos will be evidence that you didn't damage anything if your landlord tries to keep your deposit. If your landlord takes you to small claims court because he says you damaged it, the photos will be evidence in your favor.
@institches2750
@institches2750 Жыл бұрын
If you're going to fill the holes, just use spackle. It's the correct material, still dries white, and won't react weirdly when the wall is painted again in the future.

Thank you! I own a home and moved into an apartment about six months ago (don’t ask). I wanted to test peel and stick removable backsplash style tiles, so I applied three different ones to my house bathroom. Two of them took the paint and part of the wall with them when I removed them. The other one is superglued on there (it seems, anyway). This is why I tested them…

ITS TRUE. I used peal and stick on my floor in my public housing unit. It looked beautiful to begin with. But the tiles soon started looking shabby and the edges of the tiles started rubbing off. I realized (something not in the instructions of the peel and stick tiles) that I needed to add some layers of polyeurothane or something afterwards to seal the tiles - something that I didnt know about. Not only that, but I couldnt get them off afterwards. Luckily, with some help from a social worker, the public housing authority replaced the whole lot free of charge - the original ugly institutional type flooring that I tried to cover with peel and stick (what you see in public hospitals and prisons) was 50 years old anyway.

Very helpful as we now shop to replace our click together floating floor after only 2 years. Did not realize a floating floor is a terrible choice for a mobile home, what with all the flexing such a structure allows. Even a little has been enough to pop & chip each plank. Truly hope peel & stick will actually stay put. Maybe in your next video you can address different types of dwellings suitable for peel & stick tiles as well as what type of sub flooring is best. This has been an expensive lesson.

Peel and stick will work with your flooring. Just prep it right and do as they did with theirs and grout and seal it. The adhesive is extremely strong for the floor tiles. You can always look into adding extra adhesive when applying.

Oh, on Facebook there are a couple of DIY Mobile Home Restoration & Remodel groups (some have budget-friendly in the title). There also may be some videos here on YT. Anyway, I've seen a lot of great ideas and nice remodels done, using numerous methods. One lady was saving up for her floors to be professionally done, but in the meantime, she had just the bare plywood floors exposed.. so she painted and sealed them using porch paint I think. I couldn't believe the turnout, it looked good. I've seen several posts mention that they use wallpaper and vinyl wraps to update their kitchen on a budget.

If you live in a "dump" rental the landlord may give permission to leave it as is because it is an upgrade. I own my older home and have used the tic-tac tiles for a backsplash. They turned out nicely and match the paint and countertop very well. I have had them for 5 or 6 years and they look good as new. I also used the peel-and-stick flooring at the bottom of my sink cabinets the cabinets are cheap particle board stuff so I want to protect them from any minor drips. It looks good and wipes off perfectly.

I agree with you on your last point about it not being rental friendly, and that it can mess up the paint if you peel it off wrong, but...... there are people who are in rentals and really want to have nice decorative walls and flooring, so although it may cost a lot more money and it may not be as easy. But for the purpose of making it look nice, living in a decorative stylish home. I think some people will compromise.

You'll just burst my bubble and saved me some money. I was going to do a peel and stick tile from Dollar Tree on foamboard to use on my wall as a chair rail in the dining room and some peel and stick wallpaper to do on a living room wall. I guess not now.
@SimbiAni
@SimbiAni 5 ай бұрын
foamboard is portable, why not use it? 🤔 the wallpaper really depends on the quality of what you are getting, always check reviews (make sure plenty are available) as many end up on opposite sides of the sticky spectrum ie they either cling too much or not at all, or if you're lucky, you get a product that works great with your wall & sticks perfectly while retaining easy removability.. also depends how clean a wall is too as well as the base like if it's a certain type of paint (all kinds have an issue w/smth at some point lol) but I can at least recommend one thing: "WET & stick" lol it's often only found in borders, but it can really pretty up a space! soak it, position it, squeegee it, let dry & voila - to remove, resoak with just a wet cloth or sponge then carefully peel away.. no real glue so it doesn't leave any residue on your walls! 💖

@@DIYPowerCouple not in this case. The ground became saturated with water from hurricane Ian and the concrete wicked up the moisture. It never flooded inside. Have you ever looked at a floor that's a few years old? I did one for a relative and a couple of years later I noticed that the tiles actually shrunk. I had put them down as tight as possible, touching. Now there's a crack between pretty much every tile about the thickness of two or three credit cards maybe. I did have the tiles in the room for a day or two to acclimate them to the temperature as I think was recommended by the manufacturer. But in the end it didn't really matter.
@DIYPowerCouple
@DIYPowerCouple Жыл бұрын
We have always used premixed grout on our peel and stick projects so we haven't seen the shrinkage. The grout keeps the tiles from moving and it creates a waterproof 💦 barrier 🚧. It takes more time, but the tiles last a lot longer without lipping. 😀
