I never thought of this. Top idea! I always repair my steel capped boots with Sikaflex 11FC ( fast curing) polyurethane sealant. I just did my old boots yesterday evening with Seal and flex polyurethane sealant. Construction sealant/adhesive. I hope they hold up ? With Sikaflex? It went off like tyre rubber . Amazing stuff. I would love to set up a business in Australia in shoe repair. Nobody does it! My mongrel steel capped boots were $200 AUD. On special too. Most comfortable steel cap boots ever. Tyre tread? I employ the services of a local shoe repair shop. I drag my foot bad from a surgically repaired knee that the surgery was not successful. The gentleman who owns the shoe repair uses Goodyear soles on my shoes because of the extreme wear. Those soles last 3-4X longer than any original sole, even on good quality shoes. This really looks like about the same thing. A great shoe repair man can be a life saver. My bad knee makes that leg a bit shorter. He has measured me and shims the sole to make my walking motion more natural. This makes my back, feet, hips and legs hurt a lot less. Thank you and him great work fellas!

Working up bush in Kenya, 1978, I watched a local make some complete shoes from old tyres. He had some adhesive, an old machine hacksaw blade a sharpening stone and some water. Used the water to help sharpen the blade on the stone until it was razor sharp and kept it wet while cutting the rubber. Poor, no money, great long life shoes and a smile I can remember to this day.

In Mexico my dad used to make sandal soles(huaraches) out of old tires! Definitely smart if and practical. Fuck all the negative. Good shit bro!

Other countries have been recycling tires this way for many years. I happy to see that someone in the U.S. has started doing this as well.

In 1971 a friend of mine came back from Vietnam he said I brought you a gift from Nam. It was a pair of sandals made from old truck tires the soles were made from the tread and the straps were were made from old inner tubes they resembled flip-flops! I wore those things for years. They were really comfortable. They're still around here somewhere!

Nice work. When I was a young wanna be hippie I had a pair of Jesus boots ( sandals) with a tire tread sole all leather and made from a tracing of my foot. They were pretty cool back in 71.

Preparation of the boot that was not shown is that you have to remove any remaining tread pattern off of the sole of the boot. The sole has to be completely flat so that the Barge Cement has the greatest contact area. We normally apply two applications of Barge Cement to the sole of the boot and the tire tread and then let each layer dry completely before we bond them together. Some have mentioned that his method of cutting the sole looks dangerous because he is pulling the blade towards himself. If you watch how he cradles the boot against his chest then he has better blade control and is unlikely to slip and cut himself as he steadies the arm holding the knife against his chest wall. Also the sharper the knife the safer the cutting action because less pressure is needed to pull the knife through the material. I like to use a solid blade knife that I have sharpened just for this activity as it is safer than using a simple utility knife that offers a new blade tip by simply snapping off the duller end of the blade. I have seen those break unexpectedly when using them cutting around the toe section where there is a lot of lateral force applied to the blade.

I first saw tyre tread soles on my brothers scandals over thirty years ago. Thought it was an awesome idea way back then, still think it’s an awesome idea and surprised there aren’t more around. Don’t forget to do a burnout to sticky up the tread if you’re doing any running though 🤣😂🤣 Great job!

My best friends dad was an immigrant worker who wore sandals he fashioned from an old tire. He worked in the farm fields picking vegetables wearing them until they wore out.

I had a pair of sandals made of leather. .took them to the shoe maker he used the same method and they last me forever so of speak till someone stole them..good video.

The Blizzak tires were terrific on a car a girlfriend had. Others were slipping and sliding and her car drove like it was on ice treads. Sadly, the tires wore down quickly when not on ice and snow...definitely (IMO) not an all season tire. I can see where they would work well on the boots though, great idea.

I had a neighbor who repaired cemi tires do mine in 1982. I wore the leather out before I wore out the sole. Plus they were regroveable.

I can remember a guy saying he grew up during the depression and this was a common solution people used. They’d find old shoes and boots and resole them with tire rubber. It’s pretty genius and super functional. I’m guessing you’d have to sand the existing sole down to give it a nice surface to adhere to. I’d use that PL5k construction adhesive that shit is unbelievably strong.

We used to glue tire tread to our boots at the steel plant when I was on the coke ovens, your boots wouldn't melt that way

Great idea, love the concept. Have actually ran those tire on my vehicle in the snow, proven traction. Just, and perhaps the video didn't do it justice, but the overall quality of craftsmanship was lacking. Didn't even remove the laces, clean and oil , and wax the boots. Large , appeared to be, gouge on one side. Was original sole removed. Might have been better to have two pieces a sole and heel vice a wedge of one piece. But I like the concept and use of material that would be a great sole on a boot...maybe send it to Brian the boot maker at the Role Club...

Nicely done whenever I applied contact cement with those brushes before I used them I would cut the bristles with scissors down to about a half of an inch long I felt that gave me more control and made it faster I’m assuming you use them for only one use ? That’s what I did asi ordered them by the case and considered them disposable btw I was a Woodworker not a shoe repairman andoften I had to be pretty careful of finished wood inthe area I would be working in if that wasn’t the case or if it was in production we used a special pneumatic gun to spray large areas and would shield off the other areas that was also done in a special paint booth area to help with fumes That spray equipment attached to a 55 gallon drum of contact cement and pulled from the barrel as needed our shop facility was set up for mass production of Veneer and hpdl blue ups that has over 100 employees
