Here are some easy DIYs that you can make with things you find around the house. Life has changed a lot for everyone this year and I think that new DIYs should revolve around simple, budget materials and flexible substitutes. The trend for those "excessive" KZfaq DIYs (spending $$$$ on random crap, filling swimming pools with stuff, wasting kilos of food etc) is definitely over and fairly tasteless in the current situation.
I do realise that using edible ingredients is controversial as well, however I feel the play doh recipe in this video uses an acceptably small amount of flour & salt. I tend to prefer buying supplies myself from the few shops that remain open, rather than ordering non-essential things online (eg brand name play doh) which potentially puts more people at risk in the packing/shipping/delivery process. But of course, many small businesses are reliant on online sales so it's a tricky topic to navigate right now!
♥ Substitute List ♥
POLYESTER STUFFING: Cotton Wool (Pharmacies), Cushion Filler (at Home)
NOSE AND EYES: Beads, Buttons, Black Fabric, Dark Nail Polish, Glue mixed with Eyeliner, Glue mixed with Eyeshadow
FLOUR: Any type works including cornstarch/cornflour
OIL: Olive Oil, Sunflower Oil, Coconut Oil. If there's no risk of it being eaten, then you can also use non-edible oils like baby oil, massage oil, hair oil etc.
CREAM OF TARTAR: Skip this if you don't have it
FOOD COLOURING: Again, if you're not making this for a toddler then you can use non-edible colour like paint, ink, eyeshadow pigment, liquid eyeliners. Avoid nail polish as that will change the texture

Actually I neeeaarly added that to my list because sofa cushions are polyester. I was washing the covers and noticed our IKEA sofa is full of it. Though you probably need your sofa during lockdown as well so that's a hard decision 😂

For the stuffing for the pig, you can also use small fabric scraps. I find that it’s a really good way to not throw out otherwise useless scraps that I always have after a sewing project. 💚💚💚

lena sabrewing well I think it’s because as kids they don’t know about the Coronavirus and then they have to wear a big stuffy mask on their face that’s uncomfortable, so I think it makes them want to wear it like a matching outfit or something

I did the same I was making a dog and I had no cats but what I said was imma play with the cat it worked and my imaginary cat scratches meh while making the pushed dog, my mom noticed we had no cats and When she checked on me she saw the dog O.O I was scared she said its nice thinking it was a cat XD

I was looking for something to do in lockdown, and also get for my auntie for her birthday. As we are now aloud to come into small groups, we are going to have a little gathering. (just my immediate family, and her). I sewed the pig a time back, and it was really good! She collects little pigs, so I think that this will make a great addition! Thanks so much for the craft!!!!

I make homemade playdough all the time with flour, salt, water, and food coloring. I have a big batch I've kept for my 4 year old for about a year now and it hasn't gone bad. It does need to be mixed sometimes because the water rises to the top.

Listen guys! If you want to use stuffing but don’t have it, jasmine rice is a great substitute! I’ve used it before, it’s really nice and it’s almost as good as stuffing

The fake spider webs, sometimes cotton balls, and if u have 1-3 sheets of toliet paper you can rip it in pieces those also work as stuffing :)

I really liked how conscientious this video is! Thank you for addressing the food issue and suggesting alternative ingredients, as well as genuinely using stuff most people already have (I have no idea what some DIYers think people keep in their house). The idea of making a toy to help kids who are scared by masks is great too -- in places where it isn't normalized, my experience has been that masks and face coverings can be super scary for young children who are still developing stuff like facial recognition.
